From ITV:
Kimi Raikkonen gave the clearest indication yet of the potential of the revised McLaren MP4-19B chassis by posting the fastest time in the final 45-minute practice session on Saturday morning.
The Finn edged out Jenson Buttons BAR and Michael Schumachers Ferrari by a few hundredths of a second. Takuma Sato and Rubens Barrichello backed up their respective team-mates in fourth and fifth.
The signs were not promising for Schumachers rivals in the early stages, as the championship leader pounded round in the 1m14s range apparently at will.
The German clocked a 1m14.742s within the first 10 minutes, and was going even quicker on his next lap before deciding to abort it and return to the pits.
David Coulthard was the first to join Schuey in the 1m14s, followed by Raikkonen who knocked the Ferrari off the top of the charts with a 1m14.513s at the half-hour mark.
Oh, and Mark Gene is driving in Ralf's place, he finished third in the first practice session and 14th in the second
^ Raikkonen screwed up in final qualifying though.. Coulthard however is third, so the new McLaren doesn't look too bad.
interesting grid for tomorrow.
Boring this season.... Schumacher, schumacher and schumacher

rather boring race..
interesting strategy by Ferrari.. they really seem unbeatable this season.
and what an incredible move by Barrichello
The race would have been more interesting had the TV director showed more than just Schumacher. Martin Brundle and James from ITV kept saying there were some great battles back in the field, but we didn't see them!
Agreed it was a terrible race
All credit to Barrichello, wasn't a particularly good move, I think he just caught him sleeping
from ITV-F1:

London mayor Ken Livingstone has thrown his weight behind proposals for a Grand Prix in the capital. Livingstone gave the idea his backing just a day before F1 cars are due to run down Regent Street. The event was conceived as a way of promoting this weekends British GP at Silverstone. But the Northamptonshire circuit could soon face some competition for its blue riband race if Livingstone has anything to do with it. He told the Evening Standard: We would need to negotiate about routes and costs but Im definitely backing a Grand Prix for London. The Grand Prix is already a phenomenal global spectacle, watched by some 400 million people worldwide. This is truly big business and Londons economy and tourist industry would benefit significantly. Livingstone has already discussed the matter with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. Harvey Goldsmith, who is promoting Tuesdays event in Regent Street, also believes a London Grand Prix is a very real possibility. He said: If they can do it in Monte Carlo and if they could do it on the streets of Adelaide, I dont see why we cant do it in London. But Goldsmith warned that the race could not simply be run in London as a one-off. He said: Any new event normally takes three or four years before it starts to take on its own life, but with a long-term commitment I think there would be a huge upside. If were going to be the best city in the world we have to be able to put on the best events. And a London Grand Prix would be one of the very best. |

You gotta remember that the current calender is 18 events....thats pretty full up, especially when they are also trying to contain costs!!
Okay, I can see London replacing Silverstone, Silverstone has been in trouble for years for having pretty crappy facilities (apparently, haven't actually been there to find out). Not to mention that doesn't Brands Hatch actually own the rights to the UK GP, but they lease it to Silverstone? (could be wrong about that, but am sure I heard it somewhere)
NYC street circuit, good idea, but where is it going to fit in? Replace Indianapolis - not bloody likely!!! Besides, Bernie has talked about having two US GPs (in an East/West setup like years gone past), so what else is it going to replace? The only one that springs to mind is Belgium, but there is so much F1 history there, now that it is back I don't see them dropping it without a very good reason. European - not likely while Schumacher is going so well.
The only one I can think of dropping and would accept dropping is San Marino - but then so much history (especially Senna, sadly missed) and close to Ferrari land (I think)
In addition, we have Russia coming in soon, so adding NYC I think is a very long way off, too many events with not enough opportunity to drop historical events.
Silverstone has history can't get rid of that even though as you said it has poor facilities. I think for the second US Gp they should hold it at the Laguna Seca circuit, somewhere exciting and different would be interesting to f1. Spa is the peak performance and abilities of F1, imo i wouldnt change it.
However, the ones that could possibly go are Hungaroring? waste of space for f1 imo. And yes the european gp, i think it should go basically because it doesn't live up to all the other tracks in account of facilities and performance (boring).

I think Silverstone along with Spa are the most impressive races of any season so they should remain. Hungary oought to be scrapped since it is consistently the most boring race of the season.

| Originally posted by TOR the facilities at Laguna Seca are even worse than at Silverstone, so i don't think that's an option. 19 events are scheduled for next year, with Turkey added to the calendar. so at the moment none of this year's circuits will disappear.. there is some speculation however, that San Marino will loose its slot. if it's not next year, it'll definitely be gone by 2006. and the French and Canadadian GP could be scrapped off the calendar as well by that time. |
^ i agree. the problem is Silverstone is the only circuit with facilities that more or less meet the FIA requirements. Brands Hatch and Donington are less suitable for the F1 circus. and Knockhill isn't really an option is it
but you're right, it's a shame Bernie is trying to get rid of Silverstone.. i love the circuit, it's got lots of different and challeging corners.. and above all, quite a number of overtaking possibilities.
time to replace hungaroring and nurburgring with something interesting
Even though Russia is supposedly going to be added soon I doubt that Hungary will be dropped, its no secret that F1 is trying to expand into the Eastern Europe regions.
It should be dropped though imo.
The Nurburg race will remain as long as Schumi is kicking arse as he comes from close to that area. It too should be dropped though imo.
It would be financial suicide, and probably cause the formation of the WGPC real quick if there was no UK event, think about, where do the majority of teams come from? Not to mention that F1M is a British based organisation, and the majority of English speaking countries get their coverage from ITV (a British network)
The best way to reduce the really hectic schedule is to increase the duration of the season, have it start earlier and finish later.
stunning pole position by Kimi Raikkonen
Just got back from Silverstone and watching it from Abbey you could definitely tell that Kimi was on it. Jenson looked OK through Abbey but didn't make you think 'this is a good lap' like when Kimi went through. Should be an interesting race as Schumacher won't be able to get the holeshot and then disappear for the rest of the race.
i don't know about you guys, but my money's on Schumi. he won all but 1 race; it's like a no-brainer! in truth tho, i'd like to see Reubens take 1 for himself; he can do it.
In any case, a Ferrari is gonna take the checkered flag
wat did i tell u guys? Schumi leapfrogs Kimi in the first stint! Schumi is just plain brilliant! Love him or hate him, he's just brilliant!
Brilliant, yes, but being chased down by an incredibly fast McLaren - that thing is flying, what the bloody heck did they do in the revision, paint a Ferrari black?

And that, ladies & gentlemen, is the race.
And what a race. Pity about the Trulli incident, both for Trulli and Reubens.
What a crash tho, my god! And then he steps out like nothing happened. Amazing!
Congrats to Schumi & Ferrari on another awesome win!
And Webber, holding off Alonsa and Massa for eighth place.
Jaguar, who are ninth in the constructors (yes, even Jordan are above them), beat one BAR, one Renault, one Sauber, and one Williams - good effort
that was quite a crash indeed
i always knew it was going to be Michael... from the moment Kimi got stuck in traffic right after his first pit stop, his race was lost. good to see McLaren back on top though. hopefully things will be the same in Germany in two weeks time.
