It sucks when the music is so good and you have no room to dance to it - not to mention how hot it was at some points. I find it funny that none of the fans on the wall in the main room were turned on - why was that ?

I gotta say, I used to go to the Guv maybe 3-5 times/year. Then I went to Labour of Love with AVB a couple years back. That was by far the worst clubbing experience I've ever had with regards to overpacking/overheating the place. Since then, it's been the same story every time I've gone, I've learned to expect that this is how the experience will be. There are exceptions where I'm willing to battle the crowded events (like Ferry on Saturday). GREAT event... just not as fun as it could have been with ROOM TO DANCE... I still had a good time tho, don't get me wrong.
My point here is that I used to go many times/year, in comparison to my visits now. I will MAYBE go to the Guv once/year now because I expect it to be overpacked and way too hot. Obviously by keeping it at capacity, the heat will not be as much of an issue either. Hell, I'd gladly pay more for a ticket to have more room to move, but I can go to 3 or 4 other clubs around TO now that I know will have phenominal DJs like Ferry and I can breath and dance the way people should be able to at a club.
I still give props to Guv for their efforts, but you really need to twist my arm a lot harder to get me to go there anymore.
Cheers,

no offense guys, but u r the most spoiled people that i came in contact with!!! u whine like my g/f on her period
. seriously. i know it was rammed. at one point even i couldn't breath. but u don't appreciate what ur getting here. constructive criticism isn't bad at all, but constant flaming and bashing (ie guvernment) its just wrong. i've been blessed to see some good clubs.
been working' in london for 6 months where basically every saturday i was out :] so i kept in touch with techno/house scene little bit there. i've been twice in chicago (vision and house of blues or whatever u call that) and nyc's crobar. besides while back i was living in poland therefore i had only 4hrs drive to berlin. we all know what's there beside LP and columbiahale's TLFA. Tresor. i know i haven't seen 1/10th of the best clubs (and doubt i ever will
but i hate people constantly bashing guvernment!
u don't know what u have, till u loose it. all those clubs r good. really good. but the guv is right up there with them. its a top notch club with top notch music. im a huge techno/schranz/minimal fan, that's why i love tresor. but none of these clubs has...that "home feel" whatever. except guv. i don't know but when u get in the guv, its "in the air". u can feel it. simply every party, even regular night has potential of being huge and being one of ur best!
of course those clubs have their downs. for ex tresor is 30 maybe 40% gay people. don get me wrong, i have nothing against them. i even (like most of us)enjoy looking at two hot chicks making out, but when u get approached at least 10 times during one night by german gay guys, after a while u get annoy by that. on the other hand london is amazing city to party and live in. but at one party you will see more fcuking candy ravers, than in the guv during a month! again, i have nothing against candy ravers with all those glowsticks and blinking shite but when u get that constantly in UR FACE, it can be annoying! i just don't get most of u.
i know ur really cool people, u know ur music, u know how to party, u simply know ur shite, but your spoiled!!
so what that guv was packed? i danced all night 'till 8. i had no fcuking problem with guv being packed. of course it was a bit too tight, but i had no problem with finding a place to "make a move"
saw tons of people making out, tons of people smiling, jumping, dancing. having a good time. that place was full of energy .crazy. u could feel it. and just by looking at ferry enjoying himself up there u could tell it was one crazy night. u would prefer place half empty like kool house? i know i wouldn't.
biggest downer was that that at one point it was sauna there! lol. like a desert (maybe that's why kid vicious and later ferry dropped solid globe - Sahara :P) but that's the time when u can get ur beer, water or whatever. chill. still, some of u r bashing ferry for playing 8hrs instead of 4!! what's wrong with u!? that guy was loving it! he was enjoying himself as much as most of us did! he played a really good set. that place was going strong at 8:00(!!) i think that says something. 8 hrs of ferry for 15$?! that's just insane. i know some of u, would rather pay $40 or $50 if it wouldn't be as packed as it was. but not everyone can afford +$40 entrance+ beer, drinks whatever. $100 easily gone in one night :/ i know i wouldn't be able to go.
same situation with mills. that guy is a legend. besides only 3 hrs of mills for $40 or so that's still expensive. (although i know boa makes money mostly of the tickets so that's all right, iam sure mills 'will be worth every penny. )) i just don't know why is here so many guv haters? ill recommend guv to everyone. especially after ferry. for me its one of the best clubs i ever been to and iam pretty sure it will stay that way hehe. i'll even go as far as saying that it has a potential of being one of the best clubs out there (if everything is as it should be) i don't know if its cause of M Oliver, or the lights, or the sound or women or something else. whatever. i don't really care. in toronto its still a"place to go". you guys should be proud for having clubs like guv, system or boa (although iam yet to lose my boa virginity) saturday was amazing. one of the best night.
in my opinion they could make it an"all access" it would make life a little easier but lets hope they'll do that next time. ferry played an amazing set. he got that place pumped like never before. saturday+8hrs of ferry (for $15!!)+lotz of people and good looking girls+me making out with some asian girl who doesn't speak english at all = one killer night
and although ur bashing guv and u didn't like it, u still made my night...and i thank u for that
no offense to anyone, i just had to speak my mind
now let the juice flaming begin
)
Well said Juice!
I love the Guv. I like the crowd. I like the energy. I even usually like the attitude vibe. It's cool to be in a room with tons of friendly people who are straight/gay, old/young, etc all enjoying the music.
In Miami, I couldn't get over how unfriendly the crowds were compared to the Guv. Over 5 mights, we only met a handful of people compared to Saturday night where I met tons of cool, new people.
Would it be better if it wasn't so crowded? Sure. Could the sound system use some tweaking? Probably. But it still rocks and i always have a great time. Add in the world's best DJs and I am pretty happy that the Guv complex is still around.

I agree...there are FAR too many complainers around here. Go live in Northern Ontario or out in Saskatchewan and see what your "scene" will be. Pretty much everyone should know by now that Guv will usually be rammed for special events and it's not likely to change anytime soon
Seriously, How about everyone just puts their money where their mouth is??? If you are so upset with the crowd at Guv special events, DON'T GO!!! Instead, go support other venues and live with the "lesser" names (and I don't at all mean to imply their talent is "sub-standard", I just mean you won't be seeing Ferry, Armin, etc. in too many other places anytime soon). With your support, maybe other places will grow, like Boa seems to be doing, to challenge the status quo here.
Too many people, sound system was out of tune, waiting for almost 2 hours to get in...yeah, I wasn't pleased...in fact, I was quite pissed by the time I got in, particularly since so many assholes don't seem to know how a lineup works...but, two words...FERRY CORSTEN. 'nuff said. My night was fantastic. Most people around us with whom we talked were very friendly...and once those people around you realize you're the same way, they'll stay there...so within a short time, myself and my friends were in an area of people that were all pretty cool.
If Ferry wasn't enough to make the night good for you, despite all that other crap, then maybe you shouldn't have been there and maybe you shouldn't go to the next event...it would free up some more room for the rest of us who appreciate the names and events that Guv brings to Toronto!
rant done...the complaining just drives me crazy...and suggestions for jacking up the price is a stupid solution. Sure, it might thin out the crowd, but the assumption that it's the "true partiers" that have all the money and can afford to pay more is simply false. You'll just end up with less people, not necessarily a higher "quality" crowd.

| Originally posted by Durafei 1) Sound quality sucked. 2) Ferry sucked. The worst headliner set I've ever heard. Instead of playing shit for 8 hours or whatever, he should've played well for 3 hours. I only heard like 3-4 tracks that I really enjoyed. The rest were either 'ok' or shitty fillers. 3) Guv sucked - waaaaaaaaay too rammed (as bad as Labour of Love) Maybe if Guv wasn't all that rammed I would've enjoyed the party more. But with constant distractions I just couldn't concentrate on the music. Ronald van Gelderen was pretty good. Ferry should've let him play longer. |
I am under the impression that those who were heavily influenced by some substances had the times of their life whereas the rest hated it...
that should be part of the answer as to why there's so many haters...
just a thought

that's for every individual to figure out for him-/herself, to read b/w the lines and to choose for THEMSELVES what they like or dislike. it's not like they've never been there and don't have a mind of their own to make a decision that suits THEM!
it's ok to complain ... it is after all a FORUM where ppl have the right to voice THEIR OWN opinions, without imposing these on others.
it always depends on HOW complaints are made and what ASPECT of the COMPLAINT is complained about!
the bottom line is that these complaints were mostly about the insane overcrowding, which is, - as we have already ascertained a SAFETY ISSUE - and the heat issue, which is unacceptable too.
therefore, these are valid complaints & need to be brought to the attention of the owner!
NO?

to everyone complaining about saturday night:
you know how guv is for big events
you know nothing has been done about it
you should complain to people who can make a difference. not us, we don't care.
get used to it, or don't go.
i didnt like the fact that it was rammed to my titties, but hearing ferry throw down an 8 hour set made it worth it.
this is the way life is for a toronto clubber.
late review, as usual.
I had a wikked time!! Got in around 10:45 thanks to E2EK1EL's list (thank you!).
Walked into the club and it was kinda packed, but still enough room to dance. Ronald was tearing it up, in my opinion. And somehow I knew that this night was going to be really special.
Ferry came on at 12:30 and the great music just continued. He had me dancing the whole night!
Around 5:30-6, my legs were begging for a rest so I proceeded to KH hoping to meet friends who I hadn't seen the entire night. I did see a few of you, you know who are.
KH felt so empty compared to the Guv.
Eventually headed out just before 7... disappointed to know that Ferry spun until 8:20.
All in all, I had a great time with great music and great friends.
Shoutouts to everyone I met throughtout the course of the night.
See you all soon.
J.

good time
Well i had an amazing time. Ferry was amazing, got to talk to him for a bit. Show's what kinda a guy he is when his set is done at 5.30 and he just keeps going till 8.30!!! I went up to the balcony (by the doors to the drink) and looked at the floor, and there was still tonnes of people at 6.30. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but if you think ferry stunk that night, based on the place, I think you might be a minority (but everyone can have their opinions).
About this overcrowded issue, it kinda sucked. But i thought it would be, and wasnt the least bit suprised. So i just accepted the fact and was in a GREAT mood all night.
The people I ran into all night were amazing, so nice, met alot of new people, and saw alot of people i recognized.
Hey to everyone i ran into!
Overall it was amazing time.
