well, they've already lost a few games, so that's untrue.

Happy ending to ugly ballpark story

02:32 PM CDT on Monday, June 14, 2004

By KEVIN LONNQUIST / The Dallas Morning News

ARLINGTON Four-year-old Nick O'Brien proved why baseball will always be a kid's game.

The Plano resident, who was watching his first major league game with his parents, Edie and Jeff, became the sympathetic figure of fans when he was pushed aside in the scramble for a foul ball at Ameriquest Field in Arlington on Sunday.

But the ugliness had a happy ending. Nick went home with two big league bats and four baseballs. Two of the items came personally from St. Louis outfielder Reggie Sanders.

"I felt in my heart I should do something," Sanders said. "You gotta remember, it's all about the kids. As a player, we're able to reach out more."

In the bottom of the third inning of St. Louis' 13-2 victory, an unidentified fan crushed Nick on a foul ball hit by Gary Matthews Jr. in a section near the St. Louis dugout.

Witnesses said the stockily built fan, who appeared to be in his 30s, jumped over his row into O'Brien's. He then pinned Nick against the seats with his legs and grabbed the ball.

Mom, dad and other fans weren't happy. Edie scolded the fan. Nick didn't appear to be hurt but was shaken up.

"I couldn't believe someone would do something like that to a 4-year-old boy," Edie said. "He wasn't friendly."

It didn't take long for fans to respond. Mike Hall of Fort Worth, about 10 rows behind the incident, stood up and shouted, "Give him the ball!" The chant mushroomed to nearby sections. Even Rangers announcer Tom Grieve voiced his disapproval on TV. But the fan refused and was booed.

Eventually, the distraction reached the Texas and St. Louis dugouts. Sanders, who saw what happened on TV, went to the section and called Nick and Edie down to the rail to give them a bat and ball. The Rangers also gave Nick a bat from outfielder Kevin Mench. By the next inning, Nick had three more baseballs.

Asked on television what he thought about the whole thing, Nick said, "Cool."

The offending fan and his female companion left the game after the fourth inning.

"He's had a rough time," Edie said of Nick. "I think he thinks this is what is supposed to happen at every game."

thats messed up how he didnt give him the ball but whatever the kid came out with a couple of bats and balls. did the whole team sign them ?

Posted by Shamez214 on Jun-14-2004 22:59:

also, griffey and thome hit homers 499 and 399, respectively. beltran bruised his knee in one of the funniest plays i've ever seen. HOW the hell did he not know where the wall was in his own ballpark? dude just jumped right into it. HAHAHA. ummm... there's also some mets trade talk. the astros asked if we wanted hidalgo. they'd pay some salary and only ask for someone like weathers or stanton in return.

also, in other mets news, David Wright was promoted to AAA Norfolk. his final #'s at AA Binghamton are:

G AB R H TB 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG
60 223 44 81 127 27 0 10 40 39 41 20 6 .363 .467 .619

pretty god damn good. 37 extra base hits. out of 81 hits, 37 were for 2 or more bases!!! the kid can steal, superb defense, hit, hit for power and has a + arm. i smell five tools. i smell the third baseman of the mets future. the more people see him, the more they are comparing him to Scott Rolen. and you KNOW the mets are high on him because the royals said 'give us David Wright and Jason Phillips and we'll give you Beltran." mets said no. so, hopefully we'll see him in august sometime, but it's almost a given we'll see him in september.

fuck weathers man. if hidalgo somehow turns his season aruond, this will be the best deal we've made in a while. if not, its no big deal. we also get to see some different bullpen guys, seeing as art howe ONLY uses stanton and weathers...

jose reyes!!!

Posted by Shamez214 on Jun-20-2004 23:53:

yup... i've been waiting since last august for this! his triple on saturday night was one of the greatest things i've seen all season long. not because it was a triple, but because it was a jose reyes triple. that would've been a double for wiggi, floyd, piazza, zeile, etc. but reyes is one quick mofo.

the real story in baseball is griffey. if only he could have those three years back. but honestly, i think he still has a shot to get to aaron (or bonds or sosa) griffey is just too good. could've been one of the greatest EVER.

he signed to a 15 mil/season contract giving cinci a break, but also requested 3 months off during the season .

are you serious? 15 million was a CRAZY hometown discount for griffey. remember, this was during the era of arod, manny, belle etc's enormous contracts. it wasnt unheard of for a player to land a 20+ mil a year contract. and griffey (at the time) was better than both. say what you will about griffey and his injuries, etc. but there is no denying that he gives 110% in every game. and he's NEVER showed anything but class off the field. there aren't many genuine 'nice guys' in baseball today. he is one of the few remaining of a dying breed. and what are you talking about requesting 3 months off during the season?

some do. but like i said, griffey is awesome. such a nice guy. and even if he ever was a little snippy, could you blame him? after the three seasons he's had, i wouldnt be surprised if i read that he had killed himself. i mean, he had potential to be called one of the 5 greatest of all time. and the crazy thing is that he STILL has a change to pass whoever's the HR king at that time. its funny that while they're playing, we dont realize just how truly great they are. but our kids will be asking us about bonds, griffey, sosa, rodriguez, piazza, etc. we dont even realize what we're witnessing. but i guess it's always that way.

david wright and yusmeiro petit were two mets selected for the futures game. ive mentioned a lot before on what wright's been doing, but petit is quickly becoming our best pitching prospect. he's been compared to sid fernandez. he's still only in A ball, but look at the numbers. 9-1 through 14 starts with a 2.10 ERA. he has 112 strikeouts in 77 innings while walking 21. now thats ridiculous.
