I wanted Petrova to beat Williams. I didn't really enjoy that match to be honest. Blah, I guess that Petrova just needs more practise. But damn, she sure gets moody when things don't work out for her! (I don't blame the girl...I would have probably flipped out too).

The first set was pretty intense, but then it all went downhill from there. I was hoping that Serena's knee injury would have slowed her down a lot more.

I dont know if its all about needing more practice. But I must admit, more experience against big players in the Grand Slams would help her with her nerves and make closing easier.

I think her loss here was more about Serena stepping up here game, as she would sooooo often do when down and seemingly on her way out. When it comes down to crunch time, Serena has an amazing, and fairly consistent ability (in the past) to step up to the plate and really improve her game incredibly. And thats whut Serena did here.

She was only facing a match point against Petrova bc her game was sloppy. She was making all kinds of unforced errors. Serena was losing the match for herself, I feel, more so than Petrova was the reason she was losing.

Agreed. She looks kinda intimidated when she plays, and that really affects her skills. She has potential and I know she can do better, but she just has to step up a bit, and not let her opponents slow her down.

Ancic put up a DAMN good fight!

At the end of the 4th set... SO CLOSE to ending it, but nope. Ancic brought his A game (100%) and drove it into the the 5th.

Im glad Roddick one.. his game is back and Im really impresesd w/ him this tournament!!

Safrova putting out Mauresmo.. WOW! Shocking! I wish I could have seen that match (it got no coverage on TSN)
What a fucking upset! I Love it.

ANd coming up tonite is gonna be Jankovic vs. Williams... GOD DO I EVER HOPE JELENA WINS!

Shes a new favourite of mine, in my top 5 prolly on the women's. And I just need to see Serena lose tonite. SO im praying the Jankovic comes through. THat would be phenominal.

Fed's game was bloody brilliant and smooth. The man is in fine form as alwasy. I enjoy his choice of outfits for this tourment. Fed is looking great in his style with the light blue.

And next up in 2 days is gonna be Andy ROddick vs. Marty Fish... the Americans are going head to head... that should be a great match.

Man, this year's Aussie Open has been chaulk full of incredible matches even so far! And I bet its only gonna get better.

Murray vs. Nadal... cant wait either!

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-22-2007 00:56:

Watching Na Li and Martina Hingis match right now.

God I hope Hingis can pull though... looking iffy right now. This Na Li out of China has some BIG GAME! I'm impressed. Her backhand is knocking out some real winners agaist Hingis.

You know, the more I watch Hingis... the more she begins to grow on me.

Right now, I'm rooting for Hingis to win the Aussie Open (not that I think it'll happen, even if she gets passed Na, no doubt Clijsters will make it through her match and stop Hingis in teh quater finals.

But still, Martinas the woman I'd like to see take this Aussie Open... How incredible would that be... winning the AUssie open again, where she one her first open, and then proceeded to win 2 more, three in a row

- I hate Serena more than ever before.

- Serena's forehand looks atrocious. A kid with Down syndrome can do a more graceful forehand.

- Peer put up a good fight, but she made a lot of unnecessary mistakes.

- I hope Vaidisova hands Serena her oversized ass on a platter.

That is all.

P.S. Fuck Serena.

I ditto every single word.
Prayin for Vaidisova....

Roger still lookin great....he beats Robredo, it'll be agreat vs Roddick.
I still like Clijsters to win, beating Serena in the final.
And i'm obv still picking Roger aka SUPERman

You pretty much summed up all my thoughts, so I am not going to say anything more because i am too upset to talk about it.

Her ass is almost as big as her ego.

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-23-2007 14:54:

I agree -- not a Serena Williams fan... but I had to admire her come back in that set, with the way she was playing, I initially thought she was down and out FOR SURE.

Great determination. I'm loath to say, but I was impressed with Serena.

I hope Vaidisova knocks her out though. Dont really believe she will at this point, that it's gonna take either Kim or Martina (very very likely Kim though!), but I do hope Vaidisova pulls through. Shes my favourite of hte new young players on the women's side of things.

The all-American Andy Roddick vs. Marty Fish match last night was incredible. I was watching Roddick play and almost thought I was watching Federer. HOLY SHIT was his game immaculate. I've never seen a better, more composed, spot-on game of him in recent history. is Connors ever doing a good job! RODDICK ONLY HAD FUCKING FOUR (4) UNFORCED ERRORS the entire set! THAT IS PHENOMINAL! I cant believe that stat myself!!!
Roddicks game has been nothing but sloppy IMO for hte last year and a 1/2 to two years. But he showed such incredible improvement last night.

He rocked his friend Fish. The man never really got into the game, save for some excellent winners off his serve.

Ive got a lot of new found respect for Roddick again.

And though I didnt see Nadal's match against Andy Murray, I hear Nadal just barely squeaked through? That Murray gave him a lot of trouble. Impressive. Bodes well for Federer dominating him still
Fed's game's been grace full all tournament. He'll run through.
I cant wait to see the semi finals match with him vs. Roddick!

I think her ego's been very much in check this tournament though. I'm her biggest hater, and I must say her off-court behaviour has impressed me so far this year.

She seems only extremely elated to be winning as she is (as she should be). I havent seen any of her usually arrogance that usually so reviles me.

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-23-2007 15:03:

The best surprises of the top seeds to win this tournament would be:

1) Andy Roddick on the men's singles side, and

2) Martina Hingis on the women's singles side.

Though are the two I'd really love at this point see win this 2007 Australian Open. I think it would be incredible.

(Though, yes, of course, I really don't feel either one is going to take this title... But that's who I'm routing for regardless! )

I am rooting for HINGIS!

As far as Roddick goes, I don't think there is a player that I hate more. Thats right NOT EVEN Serena! I can't stand Roddick!

+1 Always been a fav of mine since waay back. Her game was always precise, and she has a nice flow to the way she sets up her shots. Continually proving to us that tennis is not about hitting the ball as hard as you can.

I dont disagree that tennis is not ONLY about hitting the ball as hard as you can.

Even if Roddick has a balls-ass game and plays mediocre, looks how often is his massive serve and aces get him out of trouble. Producing power is a very real, active part of tennis, and goes along with the finesse, precision, planning, and a good mental game. (Federer has a fucking excellent mental game, and Hingis has a wonderful one too!)

One of the reasons Serena is staying strong in this tournament is bc of the consistency and "bigness" of her serve still so far.

Id say the sole reason Hingis isnt going to win against most of the top player is bc her game lacks more power. She is incredible, and its astounding how quickly shes moved up the ranks (is she ranked no. 5 in the world now, right?), but I think shes gonna have a continual one hell of a hard time beating the top women's players, Justine, Davenport (if she was still playing...), Mauresmo, Clijsters, Serena, Sharapova, etc. bc she lacks the power to compete w/ them (after all, thats part of the reason why she left the game about 3 years ago... that in addition to her continued angle injuries I believe it was... it was just so hard for her to fight the power produced by such players and the Williams sisters)

No doubt Hingis is competing and well, but I think shes gonna hafta find a way to develop some more effective power on her shots in order start beating the top ranked players and try to move herself in a number one position in the world again.

EDIT:

Oh, and yes I agree many many players nowadays are playing the "I'll overpower you and win" type tennis. So many matches are dominated by solely baseline play. You just dont see serve and volleying like you used to.

But then you have players like Federer and Sharapova who arent afraid to come to net and are bring it back into play to a great extent than we've seen recently. Justine Henin-Hardenne comes to the net a good deal as well now. Its a riskier, tricky form to tennis to develop, but can be unbelievably effective, if the skills get developed.

For insane precision of shots, you have the master Agassi (though now retired ) who could place a ball cm's shy of the line seemingly on demand even while running around the court trying to just make contact with the balls that power players send back at him at incredible speeds.
The angles Justine henin-Hardenne, Rogers Federer, and Na Li are able to hit with their backhands is astounding, and they win many points off those simply bc players cant get to their shots. James Blake also has an fantastic down the line backhand which he rarely faults on. Its great to see when he uses that weapon. Those shots are so much about power either, bc placement on the court.

EDIT x2:

I love how many players have killer backhands now! Its so great to see. The one-handed backhand (especially la Justine Henin-Hardenne) is the most beautiful shot in the game!!! TEN FOLD!

And so many players you see now, you see them making most their unforced errors off their forehands, NOT their backhands... that certainly wanst the case several years ago!

Sharapova is playing a horrible game aganst Chakvatadze....

Chakvatadze definitely deserved to win the first set but messed up a bit in the tie-breaker. Atleast 10 times in this game Sharapova put out easy lobs which otherwise she probably would have nailed it in!!!!

True, but excellent fucking games in teh 2nd set especially all the same.

Nice long rallies... Maria was not playing at her best level, but seemed to be merely scraping by, matching Chakvatadze's... but it meant interesting, long games to watch.

I quite enjoyed that match. Frustrating to watch her fight and falter thought, while trying to close out the match (several times)
