do you even listen to the scenario i mentioned? yes, seeing dumonde and scumfrog for $20 bucks is fuckin awesome. but waiting in line for an hour (because of the pretenious bullshit usually seen outside the drink entrance) really starts things off on a sour note. And i'm surprised i'm the only one who commented on this, but am i seriously the only person who found the sound system in Kool Haus sucked shit??? it sounded so airy and all the frequencies were blending together making a horrible sound becuase the bass was dominating everything. I'm usually the last person to complain about a sound system, but it was very hard for me to get into dumonde's set because of this (for some reason, i didn't find it as bad when dave ralph was on).

My review:

Got in at 11:20. KH was decorated nicely!! Spent the next couple hours running around the club, saying hi to everyone, meeting new faces and seeing some old ones. There were lots of people I saw whom I didn't get over to say hi to (the majority of the KW crowd) and for that I apologize. Up til about 3am, the whole night is a quick blur.

Went to the Guv to check out some MO- really enjoyed that Pink Floyd track! Was enjoying the music on this side more than the KH.

Was really surprized to hear Dave Ralph starting off with some breaks- almost didn't think it was him that was playing. Midway tho, he started spinning the style I expected him to play, and was enjoying it better than the breaks.

IM came on, heard the 1st few tracks, but was not interested- seen them a few times already, and the Israeli crowd turned me off from even watching them. 3am was approaching quickly, so off to the Guv we went.

There was a slight delay in getting Scumfrog set up- he didn't start til 3:20. They even had to remove the platform in the DJ booth, so Jesse wouldn't have to hunch over as much. LOL! Stayed up there for the 1st couple hours, taking pics, but finally decided it was time to go ENJOY the music from the dance floor. As soon as I made it down & met up w/my friend Brendan, the song I've been waiting for almost a year to hear on a big system actually came on....

"That's the Way I Like It"- Offer Nissim feat. Maya
If any of you met my (very cute) friend Adili last night, that song is actually produced by her brother (Yinon Yahel). Last time Jesse was here, I gave him a CD of some of their tracks, but they had a more 'circuit house' sound to them. He was playing a new version I hadn't heard (Yinon's own, unreleased version), only to find out this was the track Yinon emailed to him just yesterday (after asking me for his address). Turns out Jesse got it just b4 he was leaving for the airport, decided to burn a copy for the hell of it, gave it a listen to when he got to his hotel, liked it, and played it!
For this, Jesse, I am eternally greatful!!!

A couple tracks later, he played Sean Miller's mix of "Stereo".

Other tracks I could ID:
Scumfrog- Simmer
Scumfrog- Come On
Scumfrog & Cevin Fisher- Let The Sun Shine
Mylo- In My Arms
Duran Duran- Sunrise
Sander Kleinenberg- The Fruit (crazy hard mix- last song of the night)
some great new Scumfrog tunes... test runs

I never made it back over to the KH so I didn't see 1 second of DuMonde. Stayed til the end, and shut the Guv down at 8am. I can't believe I lasted that long, sober. That renews my faith in myself- I was beginning to think I was getting old. I guess it just takes the right music to keep me going.

Waiting in line for an hour is a typical clubbing experience. Especially for huuuuge events.

Just a few quick comments here.

Sets:

Addy & Deko-Ze: I missed Dekoze, but Addy's was the only good set I've heard so far from him, and it was a VERY good warmup. I'm definitely going to give him another chance after that - fine work.

Dave Ralph: BORED ME TO TEARS. I think he threw two or three decent tracks for his opening, and the rest of the set proceeded to just kill my buzz completely. He played a bunch of flat, soulless prog and some very mediocre breaks tunes & remixes. Honestly, all I could hear throughought his entire set was the kicks, hi-hats, and what might as well have been white noise in between. Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I've just never had my energy sucked away so fast before.

Infected Mushroom: Excellent performance! It was probably not quite as energetic as the last time they performed in Kool Haus, but they seemed to know the sound system better this time, as it was all very crisp and clean sounding. They dropped several tracks from Converting Vegetarians, including some "harder" remixes of the chillout tunes on CD 2. Sorry, I don't have specific IDs, but overall I found it a very enjoyable set showing plenty of creativity.

Dumonde: Not bad, but nowhere near as good as their Viva set last year. They played more older tunes than I expected and not a whole lot of new or unknown tunes. I'd say their set was leaning more toward the epic trance side than the hardstyle side of the spectrum. Still a solid set though, lots of energy.

Scumfrog: Again, not a bad set, but I expected better from him. I notice he plays differently at Guv than at other clubs, and yesterday's set was far less interesting than even his last GUV appearance. I'm not a huge tribal/"DDTT" fan but I was surprised that he hardly played ANY tribal or even proper house tracks... it was very proggy and even flat at times, and thus a bit disappointing, but still worth hearing.

Club:

Crowd management: Since I always make a point of ragging on the Guv when they screw up, I ought to give credit where credit is due. Setting up the Kool Haus the way they did with the curtains blocking off the outer areas was a VERY, VERY good idea; it kept the areas relatively clear and made it very easy to get to the other side of the room. There was very little pushing and other irritations. First time in a while that I've been to the Guvernment complex and not felt like I was suffocating. And it was easy to find places to sit. Good job guys!

Guvernment main room was also a much smaller crowd than I was expecting... not sure if they limited the capacity last night or whether the night just attracted a smaller crowd than usual, but I actually went back and forth a few times from IM/Scumfrog/Dumonde and never really had to wait or push (except in the Orange Room from 1-2 am, which was still brutal, I really wish they'd put house or breaks in there and move the hip hop to somewhere else like the Drink). An unexpected and pleasant surprise.

--
Anyway, all in all it was a solid party, and despite my hesitations and restlessness during the early party hours, I'm glad I went. I got to see lots of people that I hadn't seen in a long time. And it was nice to finally meet some of the new faces - RobbyG, Spam, Vertigo, Karen, and probably a few that I've forgotten (it's been a long day). Thanks for coming out everyone!

Ahh, I'm glad I came out last night. I needed a change of pace from all the house music I was listening to recently and this almost scratched my itch completely. Infected mushroom was amazing, and hasn't lost a step since the last time I saw them years ago. the beginning of ralph's set was cool for me, I was really digging some of those breaks he was playing, which surprised me, cuz usually I won't like lots of breaks tracks slung together. Scumfrog was dissapointing, but I think it was more to do with me being in the guv main room than anything else. To find space, I was forced up on stage where the sound was horrible, and standing on the edge of it, I always feel like I'm making a specticle of myself, which I don't exactly enjoy. He didn't play hard or groovy enough for me as well, and was fucking around with the EQ a bit for my taste. Instead of adding to the tracks he was playing, at time his messing around with the EQ cause me to have two left feet whilst trying to dance. Dumonde, from the 45 mins I saw of them, were really good considering I'm not into their style of trance. Very energetic and interactive with the crowd, a very nice and rare touch for trance DJs. Plus they were feeding the crowd some refreshments which is always a good touch.
To the TAs in attendance, it's always nice to party with you. Esp Beba, and thaBroad, nice meeting you both for the first time, and you're both wikkid partiers. To the to the others whom I saw but did not introduce myself to, I'll make a point of doing so the next time I see you. And Chinaman, I told you you'd last longer than you'd expect. It was trance in the KH, and I've been dragging you out to so many house events I owed you for this one.

Posted by The Highroller on Jan-31-2005 01:39:

Music wasn't so good, but the party was amazing. This party was exactly what I needed.

Met a bunch of new TAs, got to get to know a few others a bit better. Saw a lot of faces I haven't seen in a while.

I was very impressed with the Guv/KH. Comfort-level wise, that was probably one of the best nights I've ever been to at Guv.

Good job guys!

Awesome night

Deko-ze and Addy were awesome to start off. Got into it pretty quick and was already starting to dance around, not just the usual bobbing of the head chilling at first haha. Good djs to begin, while waiting for more people to come in the club and start it up.

Dave Ralph was pretty good, still kept me going, nice set.

Infected was just crazy. I LOOOOOVED the live PA. Sounded friggin awesome, and I was all smiles when it was going on haha. They really got me starting to go crazy and such a wicked vibe. I just wished there was more room to dance, other than having to go to the sides of the crowds.

Dumonde was awesome! It seemed like a harder set most of the time, which I loved! I was off the ground half the time freaking out! So much energy at that time! Found myself singing the words to a few songs with my eyes closed and hands in the air haha. Was kinda sad I had to leave before they were done, but totally understand that big_charm and kelly were hurting from the redbulls, so no worrys guys.

The one thing that I didnt like to much was the curtins. Sure it looked good, they set up a few chill out spots, and you could walk behind it, but it mashed everyone into alittle spot. Why make a room smaller for? I've never had a problem going to the back of kool haus before on a big crowd and getting by pretty easy. I think if those werent there, then there would have been way more room to dance because people would have been able to spread out more. Especially when infected mushroom was on. Alot of people went thur the crowd to get to the other sides anyway, not even using the back part. If your in the middle of the crowd, your just going to go thur the crowd to the other side. Not get out, go behind, come around. I dunno, I want as much room as possible to dance, and I know there would have been more, so hopefully they arnt there next time.

They did play a few tunes that really kicked my ass thou!

nice seeing so many ta's! seemed like everyone was out for this one.
didnt get to see any of marks set and was fiending for him to play some sweet tunes at the end but scumfrog just kept chuggin along!

Invisible Grin Late short Review..

Another Great party to be a part of!

Spent the first half of the night in the main room where D.J Mark Oliver's Devilish fresh Tunes were gettin' massive reactions from the crowd one after another...Walked my way through the Drink where DJ's Manzone & Strong's selection of House Music had every single person in the room dancin' up a storm...

And then I was Infected...so much so that I could no longer gather my thoughts and the left over energy to enjoy sets by Scumfrog and Dumonde...

What is it about IM...Everytime they put on a great show..(repetative material at times but nonetheless their LIVE shows are Phenomenol)

//////
Now never mind all this..My highlight of the night was to see John dancin' up a storm in the back!

Posted by Chris Allen on Jan-31-2005 03:17:

The night began with a song; Dumonde - Tomorrow (DJ Jam X and de Leon remix). The one Dumonde song that has always stuck in my head that I recently deleted by accident, I had Cale (Vertigo) send me in the morning during my early morning Dumonde listening. Oddly enough, it would also close out my night as well but well get to that in a moment.

First off I will state that this review is of course about Ultra Spin 6 which had many artists, however I was there mainly for Mark Oliver and Dumonde than anyone else, so of course it is a bit biast.

Kandaio and I drove down and parked just before the regular dinnertime from London to Toronto. We planned to go shopping, as I needed a new shirt for the night, and then we were going to meet-up with DJ Ampz and get to our interview with Dumonde. As we were walking towards the Eaton Center, we got a ring on our phone from Ampz stating it was interview time NOW and to meet him at the Pantages Hotel in the lobby.

When the men themselves arrived we ended up in their hotel room ready to conduct the interview. Ive done a few interviews in my time and I can tell you that this interview had to have been my favorite. Never have I seen two guys, though so tired, have so much energy and humor while tackling the tough questions Ampz and Kandaio threw their way (RJs question especially). This interview will be featured both on Ampzs radio show Amplified Radio and Kandaios TranZaction, both of which are on ETN.fm. So tune in to check out what an experience we had (many plugs to TranceAddict on here, so its a definite listen).

The night began arriving with VIP under Scumfrog as we entered Kool Haus at around 10:30pm. We checked out both Kool Haus and Guvernment but decided to stay in Guvernment as things filled up. We were with people who hadnt been to a big club at all before, so it was great seeing their reactions as things progressed. We got up in the booth with Mark for a while as his set was going on. Touque on head and rocking out as usual, he delivered, literally, one of the most energetic and powerful sets Ive specifically heard him do to date.

Then it was off to Kool Haus to watch Dave Ralph finish up. Much to my amazement for someone who has never been to KH, there were a whole tonne of retarded people waving flags around everyone jumping up on stage and acting like complete morons. Now, I know the music is suppost to set you free but this was ridiculous. Fine, youre from Israel, good for you; Im from Canada, do you see me waving my flag everywhere like people dont know what the country is? Especially as Infected Mushroom took the stage in a PsyTrance run, the crowd surged and began to get pretty ridiculous. The people I was with decided theyd had enough of that scene and we took off over to Guv for Scumfrog.

Problem two for my night; there wasnt a time in my life other than last night that I wanted to gauge my ears out with a metal poker as we were forced to listen to hip-hop in between the magic that is dance music. An interesting point was that everyone was dancing the exact same; something I guess listening to trance for so long I have come to forget. Hip hop; if you cant grind, you cant dance. Anyway, enough of my rant.

After some Scumfrog and girl watching (holy watermelons Starsearcher!) we headed back to Kool Haus in preparation for my main attraction; Dumonde. We got there just as they were setting up on the stage. We did our re-introductions and away they went. Their set started in normal Dumonde form, except for the fact that Infected Mushroom had changed the entire configuration on the system around and it was wrong for Dumonde. They scrambled for the first few tracks but got everything in order after that. These boys were here for a show. Such great entertainers, throwing their arms in the air and pumping their fists in pure Dumonde fashion. Then things took an interesting turn. Jurgen jumped up on the stage with a bottle of champagne and started passing it out first into cups, then directly into the mouths of some lucky fans. That my friends, is one hell of an icebreaker! The night progressed into some of my favorite tracks including the newly released Singularity 2005 (which we had a nice little preview of in the interview). Through the fever of their show Jurgen continued to impress by running around, handing out drinks, pouring booze, signing autographs, the whole deal. They are true entertainers. Not only entertainers, their mixing was flawless. I had a prime seat; directly beside them for most of the show so I could see exactly what was going on. As the night came to a close, they brought out what I had been waiting for all night; Tomorrow (DJ Jam X and de Leon remix). The crowd seemed to get a sudden surge of energy and lose control as they belted out this final tune.

The night ended but it was not the end of this report. Ampz, Kandaio, and myself then went out for breakfast at Eggspectations near the Pantages Hotel where the guys were staying. After quite a fulfilling meal (of Hamburgers for Dumonde, oddly enough) and some great conversation, we parted ways as the fact that it was still early Sunday morning began to set in. We hopped in the car, picked up our friends from their hotel and like true troopers in the art, drove our asses back to London. So, after a quick nap I bring this to you after nearly 35 hrs awake.

Special thanks to Shaya for all his help and of course getting my photos on LuvtheGuv. Awsome again man! Thanks!

To all the TAs from last night; once again it was great seeing everyone! I of course cant remember all the names but my camera lens will do all the name shouting for me.

Jurgen and Dominik; if you are reading this I would personally like to say thank you. As I said earlier in the night, you were one of the reasons I began to enjoy this music so much. Thank you for an unforgettable night. We will be speaking with you soon.
