Iran stretch lead amid violent scenes

North Korea 0-2 Iran

SEOUL, March 30 (Reuters) - Iran beat North Korea 2-0 in Pyongyang on Wednesday in a match that ended in violent scenes to take the outright lead in their World Cup qualifying group.

The match officials were unable to leave the pitch for 20 minutes after the game as furious North Korea fans hurled bottles, rocks and chairs in frustration.

North Korean soldiers and police were forced to step in to restore order at Kim Il-sung Stadium after defender Nam Song-chol was sent off for shoving Syrian referee Mohamed Kousa.

The violence spilled over outside the stadium where thousands of angry North Korea supporters prevented Iran's players from boarding the team bus.

Riot police finally pushed back the crowd far enough for Iran's squad to depart two hours after the end of the game.

'The atmosphere on the pitch and outside the pitch was not a sports atmosphere,' said Iran's Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic.

'It is very disappointing when you feel your life is not safe. My players tried to get to the bus after the game but it was not possible -- it was a very dangerous situation.'

A deflected free kick from Mehdi Mahdavikia in the 33rd minute and a Javad Nekounam goal 10 minutes from time gave Iran seven points from three games in the final round of Asian 2006 qualifiers.

Tempers flared towards the end of the Group B match as Nam was dismissed for pushing Kousa after he had denied the defender a penalty.

The game was held up for five minutes following Nam's dismissal as bottles rained down onto the stadium's running track.

As trouble re-ignited at the final whistle, security forces were mobilised and stadium announcements warned the crowd of 60,000 to be calm.

The result left North Korea's hopes of qualifying for their second World Cup in tatters after their third consecutive defeat.

Bahrain can join Iran on seven points if they beat Japan in Saitama later on Wednesday.

North Korea were unlucky to lose their opening game 2-1 in Japan and they threatened to file a formal complaint to FIFA over the refereeing during last week's 2-1 home defeat by Bahrain.

North Korea have achieved little success since their shock quarter-final appearance at the 1966 World Cup in England.

However, the country's communist government has lavished cash, modern housing and luxury cars on the players as incentives to reach the 2006 finals.

The top two teams from each Asian group of four advances automatically to next year's World Cup in Germany.

that was because he went of the field and came on without taking permission from the ref ... pretty funny stuff

in all my life watching football ive never seen a team play as badly as azerbaijan did ... seems to me they were focused on wasting time right from the first minute given the amount the over dramatized injuries ... and that moment where rooney kicked the ball out of play because an Azerbaijan player was injured after which azerbaijan kicked the ball out of play at the other end of the goal just epitomized their unsportsmanship .. they played like a bunch of underconfident wimps and deserve to be at the bottom of the table

good to see isreal put france in their place(id love to see france not make it to germany).. shame about spain though ... such a talented team with nothing to show for it

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been handed a two-match touchline ban and fined 20,000 Swiss francs (9,000) by UEFA for his part in the Nou Camp row. Chelsea, Mourinho, his assistant Steve Clarke and security official Les Miles were charged by UEFA with bringing the game into disrepute following the first leg of their Champions League tie in Barcelona.

^^ Short version ...not good for Chelsea

lol double wtf This is actually really funny...

The Azerbaijani coach (he's actually Brazilian) was lashing out at Michael Owen after the game and calling him a midget

quote:
...The captain of Brazil's 1970 World Cup winning team was furious about remarks attributed to Owen that he expected to score five goals in Wednesday's game at St. James' Park.

Owen missed at least three easy chances, leaving Steven Gerrard and England captain David Beckham to get the goals.

"Michael Owen. What has he won?" Carlos Alberto asked after the match. "The champion of the world? At least he plays for Real Madrid, but he never starts. He's on the bench every game.

"Where are the five goals? He didn't score a goal. He thinks he is the king. Who is he? I have some history in football. What is the history of this guy?"

Poland beat Azerbaijan 8-0 on Saturday, leading many commentators to predict a high-scoring victory for the home team.

"He doesn't deserve that I talk about him. He has to go and clean the shoes of Beckham," said Carlos Alberto, who described Owen as a "midget."

...

The England coach said he was confident that Owen had not made the remarks that angered Carlos Alberto.

Benny, if you haven't seen the videos of our invasion of Guiseppe Meazza last season in the UEFA cup heres a few clips Ive found recently, theres nothing better to warm you up than a good old authentic Mediterranean atmosphere.

INTER Olympique de Marseille :

Alright wankers lets get back to business, we got some major football action tomorrow and on Wed. Those who can place your bets, by account on bet365 has hit 0 so Ill be watching the matches stress-free but Lyon seems a sure pick @ Gerland and I could see a draw at Anfield but overall its quite a tricky game to predict. Its the first encounter between Liverpool and Juventus since the dark day of football of the 1985 European Champions' Cup final at Heysel. It should be a dandy.

That sucks for your boys man, but hey it's the chance you take for the unique euphoria of authentic glory. I'd seen the OM videos on mouvement ultra(don't know if you know the site or not) and always said L'OM suppoters can rock any stadium.

Tommorow, more quality CL with the Milan derby. Even without Shevy, I can't see Milan losing this one but every curse has to come to an end (Inter's only hope the way I see it ). I also don't see Chelsea having a very easy time with Bayern, but Mourinho has yet to be shut up so it's hard for me to really predict the verdict.

Liverpool 2-1 Juventus is not the end of world. Remember, Juve are KING of 1-0 wins, esp. at home.

My heart is so torn as I want both PSV and Lyon to win... And I don't know who to cheer for. :P

They are the "dark horse" in the tourney...I'd love to see them go through!!! Michael Owen must be kicking himself now ...but it's ok he's doing really good for himself

i love when fans sing their team's anthems. i get goosebumps whenever i hear the kop singing 'you'll never walk alone.' like last summer, i don't think i could have sang/screamed it along any louder. ahh..i'm a geek

What a luminous display of high-tempo football by LFC at the beginning of the first half. The rhythm predictably dwindled as the math progressed, which allowed Juve to settle and take control in the second half. Its a realistic result considering Zlatan hit the post and Juve had a few other clear chances but you have to be gutted to see LFC concede such a weak goal that might be crucial in aggregate. Its really infuriating to see world class football marked by such blatant blunders, with Dudeks portfolio of famous gaffes Benites has quite a dilemma who to designate as the starting goalie. I would hate to see a 1-0 game in Turin (a very likely scenario) which would put Juve through because of such a cheap goal, but what can you do thats football, not the first time nor the last time well see mess-ups in such vital encounters. What a screamer from Garcia through, Ive seem him score a few similar beauties in the EPL, hes such a critical player in the squad, you wont see him the whole game then it will take him only one occasion to set the stadium on fire. What an absolutely phenomenal goal. Overall I think LFC surprised many a neutral fan with an absolutely phenomenal display of electric and efficient football in the first half hour, its quite a shame that they lost the attacking dynamism as the match progressed.

Olympique Lyonnais PSV is on at 00:00, it will surely be an exciting return leg in Eindhoven. Im happy for Beasley the way he adjusted coming from MLS, its in the interest of the game on this side of the Atlantic that MLS players succeed at the highest level in Europe.

Chelsea Bayern tomorrow, I predict a slightly surprising result.
