Why?!

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-11-2010 18:31:

it is possible to mix without headphones...it is called timing and knowing what you are doing.

Just hold them in hand and rock up and tell them you're playing tonight. Then check the headphones in with your jacket

Random fire siren samples during breakdowns. That is the most annoying thing ever IMO.

I actually had a friend that always brought a DJ bag with some Behringer headphones and a bunch of old records so he could cut the line and tell the doorman he was playing. I never had the balls to do it but he said it worked like a charm lol!

- overacting
- pointless knob/fader/etc turning circus
- uncontrolled alcohol/drug use
- bad mixing

I wouldn't go that far.

there are people who abuse it and others who use it to the fullest.

Yeah sure it takes the beat matching out. But it doesn't make up for good track selection, EQing, and overall good mixing.

Honestly i only see it opening doors and making even more possibilities for unique stuff on the fly.

Packing the DJ booth with drunk pretentious bottle-service/VIP pricks has to be up there. I hate a cramped DJ Booth.

you can mix with cdjs without headphones just as easily if you know your tracks.

um,

most djs wouldnt know their tracks that well.

Lets say all of your tracks start on the first kick. If you know the exact BPM of all of the tracks you play and do the maths in ur head, ur being a bit silly or you dont know your tracks very well.

Oh and memorizing the key's a bit silly too.

Actually, I totally see what you mean now, cans outside the booth = tool like behavior. It should never happen!

speak for yourself

any slight imperfections are easily fixed with the filters, and if you are only playing tracks you don't know you are a pretty shitty dj to begin with (aka people obsessed with only playing new stuff that they have barely ever listened to themselves.)

I'm not saying that everyone should do this, only that it is possible and not even that hard. Danny Howells for instance mixes sans cans quite a bit.

I didnt mean to offend you, I wasn't specifically referring to YOU, as a DJ, by you i meant anyone.

I dont think anyone plays tracks they don't know. I'm saying it's stupid to memorise BPM and Key and do calculations in ur head...

using filters won't hide poor beatmatches and trainwrecking to anyone who knows what to listen for.
