i'd rather have orlando hudson than jeff kent,at least he is young and could play for a few more years

Orlando Hudson = Anderson Hernandez.

Now everyone's saying Grudz will be a Met. Oh well...

Wins do mean something in pitching (yeah there is too much emphasis on wins in deciding who has had a better year or not).

Here's a tidbit that I totally agree with about A.J. Burnett signing with the Blue Jays today:

Burnett's innings have always been too low, because he throws so many pitches. Like many strikeout pitchers, he walks too many batters, leading to higher pitch counts and earlier exits. And that, of course, leads to fewer wins. Burnett ranked 15th in the National League in pitches per plate appearance. Meaningless stat for fantasy? Not really, because it shows Burnett is not likely to become a big winner as long as he's averaging barely six innings per start.

i am shocked that a.j. burnett landed on a mid-market team like the blue jays. i thought a high-market team, like the yanks, mets, red sox, or rangers would try to make an attempt at him .

i cant say anything about the blue jays, because they look like they have talent on their roster, with chacin and burnett booked as 1-2, and obviously ryan as the closer .

but will this put them over the hump above the sox and yanks ?? no.

Forgetting about Halladay?

Their rotation is lots better than the Yankees or Red Sox.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Dec-07-2005 12:24:

Both Halladay and Burnett (and Lilly) have had serious injury problems in their careers so we'll see. The Bj's are still lacking a quality big bat but I hear they're looking at Piazza (a waste of time) and Frank Thomas (always hurt). I bet they still wish they had Delgado.

Posted by King Ecnal on Dec-07-2005 22:17:

Braves trade Estrada?

Rentaria to Atlanta?

Lugo to the sox...

winter meetings are getting crazy...

Soriano in Boston would be nice though...

Posted by Member of X on Dec-07-2005 22:43:

I think there has been a lot of speculation but not a lot of actual activity. A few small trades but nothing too much.

Soriano to Dodgers is big rumor. Dodgers seemed to be involved with a lot of guys. ie: Zito, Bobby Abreu

Red Sux got Mark Loretta for Doug Mirabelli today. Juan Pierre to Cubs. Pierre has a weak arm and a low OBP. Not my ideal Yankee CF, I'm happy they didn't get him. He'd be a glorified Tony Womack and would have batted 9th anyway.

Jesus Caveman is talking about loving NYC only cuz he wants to drive the price up for Boston. Bleh.. I don't want his weak arm either. 7 years? Puh-leeze!

Human windmill Adam Dunn to Orioles is a rumor. Frank Thomas was declined arbitration. Bernie will be too I think later today.

Posted by Shamez214 on Dec-07-2005 23:29:

Anyone who wouldn't take Adam Dunn because he strikes out 200 times a year is CUUURRAAAAAZYYY.

I'd take 200 Ks over 100 Ks and 100 Ground Outs any day...

Posted by Member of X on Dec-08-2005 04:39:

Soriano traded to Nationals... for three scrubs. Wow

About Dunn, then I imagine you a big fan of Jay Buhner cuz Dunn had an average of around .240-.250 last year. It's boom or bust. Not really my type of player. He really doesn't drive in a ton of runs even though he hits 40+ HR's a year. Seems a little overrated to me. Jay Buhner used to hit .220 with 40 bombs and my best friend, a Mariners fan, hated the guy cause he was tired of 1/4 1 HR, 1 run, 1 RBI at the best. That's only in 1/4 games.

Mark Teixeira is like 5 times the better player.

Posted by King Ecnal on Dec-08-2005 05:27:

I knew Johnny Damon was an idiot... but he continues to prove why the state of Florida public schools are in trouble... but regardless, the man asks for seven year deal, which is outrageous, then he starts to play BAD AGENT FOR HIMSELF... guy is a meathead...

a slow roller with the bases loaded is better than a whiff and miss. I'd rather have the contact hitter.

Edgar Renteria to the Braves for 3B prospect Andy Marte.

With Renteria and Ramirez are now both gone, now who plays short in Boston??

Orlando Cabrera back from Anaheim. That's the rumor.

A fast roller with the bases loaded and 1 out is an inning ending Double Play. A K with the bases loaded and 1 out gives someone else a chance.

The object of the game of baseball as a hitter is to NOT make an out. Sure, Dunny strikes out more than anyone else. BUT... he gets on base more than, almost, every one else. Dunn makes an out 6/10 at-bats, where as most other players make outs 6.6/10 at-bats. But, I realize this argument is a lost cause.

I already have a bet with my friend that Wilkerson puts up better numbers than Soriano. I'm not sure exactly how it's structured yet.

But, believe me, Soriano is going to be HORRENDOUS playing 81 games at RFK. HORRENDOUS.

Last post...

::WHEW:: I'm glad that Renteria for Marte trade went down. Marte is going to be real, real good. Though, it would have been nice to have the two best Under-30 3B in the same division.

I read moneyball too and the philosophy makes sense but I still have a varying opinion on it. For starters, the Oakland A's haven't won a single championship with that philosophy. Billy Beane's biggest diciple, Paul Depodesta, pretty much failed as a G.M. It does make a huge point in that it's about scoring runs. Not about batting average and how that's an overrated statistic. Dunn does have a high OBP but his OPS in comparison isn't nearly as great. Juiceambi back then was the Oakland A's perfect hitter with producing runs and the massive OBP.

Mostly about not making outs is Billy Beane believing that sacrifice bunts and attempted steals are detrimental to scoring runs by statistical average. You don't give away outs... ever. But there's something to be said about Hideki Matsui who hits 20 less homers than Adam Dunn but drives in more runs. Matsui still has a good OBP but he is able to pick his spots to hit more to score more runs.

I think of it this way also.. a walk is 1 base. A double is two bases and closer to scoring. I want the guy that gets on base and doesn't chase pitches but also a guy that can lace a double as well. Not just merely a K or HR.

About Soriano, tough to say that he's actually gonna except playing in the OF cuz he's a free agent after this year and an decent hitting OF won't command as much money as a eye popping hitting second baseman. He has refused to move into the OF before so who knows what happens. Plus, I think he won't hit as many HR's but he'll have more doubles with his speed.

But it sure is a lot easier to hit in Texas with that heat in the summer. Balls just fly out of there. But for me.... now I'm sure my opinion pales in comparison to Shamus but I'm not too enamored with a .247 avg, 11 HR's, and 57 RBI's. You can say that it was a lot with the ballpark but guys like Vinny Castilla that ended up taking a huge downturn in their statistics do so because they just suck and are old.

And it's always hard about prospects vs. real major league decent hitters. If you look at the best prospects over the last 10 years, probably 90% don't turn out to be much of anything. Bill Simmons on ESPN analyzed this really well from the Beckett trade. There is obvious prospect trades that come back to haunt teams but sometimes those can't miss prospects actually do miss completely.

But I think Renteria is a piece of poo. 30 errors? And not even that much offense. Can't disagree with the trade but I don't know why they got rid of Cabrera in the first place.

Well, as a minors junkie, I'm pretty confident in myself when I think a player is going to be good. I'm not a scout so I don't go by "tools." I can't. I just look at the stats. And Marte's stats are eerily similar to those of David Wright.

Hanley Ramirez, on the other hand, I'm not so sure will be as great as the hype suggests.

Posted by Shamez214 on Dec-08-2005 23:16:

.266/.329/.407/.736 = The Nationals on the road.
.236/.314/.362/.676 = The Nationals at RFK.

.278/.349/.421/.771 = The rest of the NL against the Nationals on the road.
.247/.317/.371/.688 = The rest of the NL against the Nationals at RFK.

1.28 WHIP 3.56 ERA = The Nationals pitching at home.
1.46 WHIP 4.19 ERA = The Nationals pitching on the road.

.258/.318/.430/.747 = The Rangers on the road.
.278/.341/.509/.850 = The Rangers at Ameriquest.

And now... Soriano's Home/Away splits:

.315/.355/.656/1.011 = Soriano's Home stats.
.224/.265/.374/0.639 = Soriano's Away stats.

I really, really, really think Soriano is going to be TERRIBLE in the NL , in particular the NL East at RFK for 81 games. Not saying he's going to put up a .639 OPS, but somewhere around .750 for sure.

Which will make the Devil Rays even MORE of a threat in the next few years.
