1 week will be fine. 2 weeks will be pushing it. last thing i want is to have my prof's reschedule exams and assignments to cram everything in; which could lead to a shift of exams and assignments into my bday aka bal en blanc

Posted by TO guy on Mar-07-2006 14:17:

If it goes two weeks they're saying (around here anyhow) that they'll just cram everything in and not extend the year at all. That would be sweet, cuz I needs to start workin.

From what I learned from a teacher of mine is that the two parties were far from over about discusssing this whole thing, I mean they walked off at around 10:30pm not even waiting for the dead-line, So im sure that it will last about a week. Do not quote me on that but im sure , in my opinion that it will. S@Y website is really quick with its update, so im sure if you keep checking it, updates will be made if anything changes.

EDIT: I found out at around 10:30 that were we on strike, so if the couldnt even wait until 12:01am that is intense.

so basically they will talk on a daily basis?
which means there is a possibility the strike will end tomorrow?

I don't think there will be daily talks..maybe there will be, but I doubt it. But I mean the webiste will update as soon as it have info for us. As well as collegestrike.com

Posted by TO guy on Mar-07-2006 16:59:

You'll find out by watching the news. That's actually how the teachers will find out if they've gotta work. Kinda crappy system eh?

EDIT: oh cool, they have a website now.

Posted by KaiLee on Mar-07-2006 17:09:

Okay from what I hear they can't go back to talks until march 27th. This is what my RA told me and i'm not sure if she is correct or not.

Seems a bit silly they wouldn't be able to resume talks until then if they want to get this issue resolved for the sake of the "students well-being"

you mean i gotta be at home to watch the 11pm news? that sucks.
cuz i need to know if they will still be on strike on friday..
if they are then i can make it to hotel on thursday night. if not, then i cant make it out.

Posted by TO guy on Mar-07-2006 17:12:

there's really no way of knowing. They could reslove it at any time. I would be really surprised if this is resolved by Friday though.

Posted by KaiLee on Mar-07-2006 17:21:

well either way you can't have more than two weeks tacked onto the end of your school year, it interferes with summer classes (if your school offers them).

Also legislation forbids teachers striking for more than 4 weeks, so don't expect anything more than that.

my prof was tellin me that durin the strike they cant even make contact with students at all. no emails, calls etc or they get fined 5000 for each contact and the college 25k... thats just fuked.

Posted by TO guy on Mar-07-2006 17:31:

yeah it sure is.

Posted by Orko on Mar-07-2006 17:33:

Its funny how everybody is 'hearing this from their prof'. When it comes to teacher's unions, there is so much misinformation out there, its amazing.

A lot of teachers/profs think they knwo what they are talking about, but from my experience with dealing with school strikes, they dont know jack squat.

Posted by TO guy on Mar-07-2006 17:33:

and then there are teachers that actually go to the union meetings.

Posted by disko-kandi on Mar-07-2006 21:02:

hahahahaaaa!!! no nite classes for me after all + 2 weeks off anyways for TESL program = 3 week holiday unless the strike goes on. WIIIIICKED!!!

Posted by Dancing*Queen on Mar-07-2006 21:14:

I did more school work today, then if I had gone to class....that's not right

On average your profs would be making 8000-18000 more per year after ONLY 4 years!! Who else on the planet gets that kind of wage? AND IT'S STILL NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!?!?!?!?

So listen, next time tuition goes up don't blame the government. Thank your ever so greedy profs who are probably the same ones that critisize the government for not enough education spending. If they cared so much they would settle for the same workload with a raise equalling that of inflation. (most people arent even lucky enough to get that much!)

I don't know about that actually (one of the few times we've disagreed hehe).

From what i saw on OPSEU's website, what the profs want the most is more full-timers in the classrooms. And according to a media advisory release from the Canadian Federation of Students "in the past 15 years, the number of college students increased by 53% while real, per-student government funding declined by 41%. At the same time, the number of full-time faculty has decreased by 21.84%" [source].

Also, considering the Ontario government wants increase the college tuition in September, i think it's only right that we, as students, should get better quality education, in other words, more one on one time with profs. It's getting increasingly hard to speak to them between classes.

quote:

What were seeing is just the tip of the iceberg, said Greener. Last year, college presidents made it clear to the Ontario government that at least $150 million in additional funding was required for the current yearjust to stop the steady decline in quality. Yet colleges received $50 million less than required just to maintain the status quo, never mind making improvements.
In this context, it is outrageous that the Ontario government is preparing to increase college tuition fees next September, said Greener. Why should Ontario families keep paying higher and higher fees for less and less quality?
Ontario students are demanding that the Ontario government immediately:
- inject the funding necessary to resolve the faculty / management dispute by funding a 10 percent increase in the number of full-time faculty within the college system;
- place a moratorium on tuition fee increases until the full-time faculty-student ratio is restored to 1990 levels; and
- provide a full reimbursement of costs borne by students as a result of the disruption of classes.
