Toronto, Canada April 7, 2006 - Grammy Award Winner and owner of Stereo Nightclub in Montreal, David Morales along with his partner local entrepreneur Nevio Persia will be opening Torontos highly anticipated after-hours and event space Sonic Nightclub at 270 Spadina Avenue in the heart of downtown Toronto on Saturday April 29, 2006. Opening night will feature David Morales alongside the Legendary Frankie Knuckles and Nevio Persia.
A true vanguard in the world of dance music, the efforts of Brooklyns own David Morales remain unparalleled. As a producer, hes enjoyed multiple Grammy nominations (including a win in 1998 for Remixer of the Year) and hit records (from his own to Mariah Careys 1996 album Fantasy). Morales has also countered the generally faceless world of dance music as a visible icon and is currently lending his celebrity and face to the ALDO Fights AIDS campaign benefiting the global HIV/AIDS prevention initiative, YouthAIDS. The campaign launched in March in over twenty countries around the world. Please visit www.youthaids-aldo.org for more details.
With residencies at Crobar NYC, Stereo Montreal, 10 years at Echoes in Rimini Italy and 6 years every Saturday at Pacha in Ibiza along with the entire Def Mix Roster, David is guaranteed to bring the sounds of the worlds dance floor to Sonic Nightclub. For more information please see attached biography or www.defmix.com.
Nevio Persia has been involved with Torontos electronic music culture and club scene for the past 15 years, whether it was behind the decks or behind the scenes. His love for dance music and his friendship with David led to the collaboration and birth of Sonic Nightclub. He is dedicated to creating a supreme atmosphere, not only as an owner but also as one of the clubs residence DJs.
David and Nevio have taken great steps to renovate the space at 270 Spadina Avenue which was an old theatre. They started with the leveling of the dance floor, thus increasing the square footage and added of hardwood floors for the ultimate dancing experience. Precipice Studios Torontos hot design firm that have given us Lobby, The Cosmopolitan Hotel and Salon Jie - have prepared Moroccan accents for the room that will include plush banquet seating areas and a redesigned entrance.
Careful detail has been paid to the custom built analog sound system which compliments the hardwood floors and gives rich, warm and inviting sound, which is the same concept that gained Stereo the reputation of having one of the best sounding rooms in the world. The Paradise Garage inspired lighting designed by Dymax enhances the sensuality and vibrancy of the venue and will prove to be the best lighting show in town.
Musically Sonic Nightclub will feature residencies from international artists such as David Morales, Billy Carroll, and Chus & Ceballos with support from Stereos DJs and local talent such as Nevio Persia, Sean Miller and Cajjmere Wray. Talent does not stop there - as a cast of Torontos premier performance artists along with International recording artists will be onsite providing aural and visual theatrics throughout the evening.
To support the entire operation, Sonic Nightclub is made up of professionals from the industry whom have been in the business for over 20 years. The combination of youthful and trendsetting directors and a stellar marketing team know how to bring the right talent and produce an epic style event on a constant basis.
The Sonic Family includes:
David Morales Owner / Resident DJ, Nevio Persia Owner / Resident DJ, Steven Barkin Owner/CEO, Jennstar Bon Vivant, Marketing, PR and Promotions Specialist, Carey Britt Talent Buyer, Gairy Brown Creative Director, Gavin Bryan Counciliary / Host (Industry Nightclub), Mike Matar Host / Club Diva, YYZ Entertainment Host, Exposed Entertainment Host, Tara Hendela Host, Jeff Button (Floorwhore) Host and Ralf Madi Counciliary / Host (Project Orange/ZRF).

DJ spins into T.O. (taken from toronto's METRO)
Name: David Morales
Occupation: DJ
International dance music producer and veteran DJ David Morales is on a non-stop trek around the world with one mission in mind: getting partygoers on their feet.
His latest stop is Toronto with the April 29 launch of Sonic, a new after-hours nightclub hes spearheading with local DJ Nevio Persia.
Ive spun at the old space before and I saw its potential, says Morales, who after 31 years of spinning and winning a Grammy, ranks as one of the worlds top mix masters.
In addition to running his own label, Def Mix Productions, he has remixed the sounds of musical giants like Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and his personal favourite, Mariah Carey.
Shes a workaholic like me, notes Morales, who takes credit for giving Carey club credibility when he transformed her 1995 pop hit Fantasy into a high-energy house anthem.
From then on, hes remixed a string of Carey hits for the club: My All, Honey, Its Like That, and her latest release, Say Something.
In addition to having spawned one of the biggest dance hits last year with How Would You Feel, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native is also known to ravers in Montreal with his club Stereo, praised for its simplistic, intimate setting and impeccable surround-like sound system.
Those features are echoed in Sonic, his second major business move in Canada.
Im not afraid of the competition because there is no competition. I have the best sound system and my name is money, says Morales, who flew into town last week with bags under his eyes to personally supervise the finishing touches to his investment, which has clearly cost a mint in renovations.
The space, which has gone through three name changes in three years (from Boa to 270 Spadina to Sonic), is now decked out with a Moroccan-themed interior a stark contrast with its rather odd location, the heart of downtown Chinatown.
Even more odd is that the space used to be a Chinese theatre, but thanks to the DJing duo, the floors have been levelled with sound-absorbing hardwood. I love the location, and besides, I can always get the best Chinese food, says Morales.
OMG.. I am reading through the rest of this thread now.. LMAO @ Dan!!
Trying to start a flame war between Montreal and Toronto
I am so glad that I did not see that. I would not have been able to participate seeing as I am a TOTA but really being one of the MTL'ers as well
I had seriously considered going to this event this weekend but after some serious thinking I have decided that my body needs a rest from partying for sure so not going out until C&C.. I should be WELL rested by then.

There's palpable frustration where a lot of Toronto DJs, promoters and club-goers are concerned. "We need new spaces!" seems to be the most common refrain as venue after venue closes (or goes the snooty bottle-service route), the "entertainment district" grows more grotesque and warehouse parties are shut down more frequently.
Brooklyn DJ/producer David Morales -- who has played dozens of Toronto events since debuting here at the Twilight Zone in 1985 -- has his take on what we're facing.
"You don't have a real quality space in Toronto where everybody unites, where it's not ego or fashion, where people specifically go to hear music on a great system with great lighting and where it's warm with no aggression."
The Grammy award winner and 31-year turntable veteran is sitting across from me in an office at Sonic, the club that he and local DJ/entrepreneur Nevio Persia are opening at 270 Spadina Ave., the former home of Boa-Redux. It will be the second Canadian club that the jet-setting Morales co-owns, with Montreal's Stereo being the first, and serving as inspiration for Sonic.
"Canada just draws me," Morales laughs. "When I started at Stereo seven years ago, it was as a monthly resident DJ. I never intended to co-own it. With Sonic, it just seemed right to do. I called Nevio to say, 'I want to be your partner. I want to do this place. It has character, but let's take it to a whole new level.' For me, that meant taking it back to square one, designing from scratch and making changes like levelling the floor and laying down beautiful wood, and putting in dynamic lighting. Too many after-hours venues look sketchy -- cold and dark as opposed to a room filled with colours and warmth."
Walking through the venue, I was impressed with the approach. The main room is now welcoming, with hardwood floors throughout and the tiers feeling more connected than ever. Gone is the awkward stage, while a custom-designed sound system and extensive, Dymax-designed lighting have been added. Perhaps best of all, the DJ booth now sits closer to the dancefloor.
"Now we're in the party," Morales enthuses. "It takes it to a more personal level. For me, running a club is like inviting somebody to my home. It's about making a difference. We want to emphasize what we're offering people as opposed to relying on a DJ's name and draw for example. We want good, happy, festive music, and to be the place in town that everybody who loves to go out wants to be at. From the minute they come -- from security, down the line -- they should feel positive, like they're going to one big loft party. I feel like we're about to turn the page in Toronto clubbing, and put it on a different scale."
Aiding in the vision is a top-notch team of T.O. clubbers, including booker Carey Britt and promoters/hosts Jennstar, Gairy Brown and Gavin Bryan. Sonic will operate as an unlicensed, after-hours venue, with house music as the main focus. The team of resident DJs includes Morales and Nevio, and heavy-hitters including Chus & Ceballos, Honey Dijon, Victor Calderone, Stephan Grondin and locals Sean Miller and Cajjmere Wray.
There's no doubt that Sonic will be a significant addition to our clubscape, providing a new home for mature, mixed crowds of music lovers. Morales is, however, aware that some will cynically hold on to memories of what has come before at 270 Spadina and assume Sonic will merely bring more of the same.
"I'm going to erase that memory in a second," he says with a grin. "I'm looking to go way beyond what was here. We're going to make a statement. A big one. I'm sure there are folks in Toronto who are ready for a change.
