Reverse the order of them and it still makes sense. |
yea

LOL, whatever man. My answer is straight from the APA writing manual. And this case, YES, the hard and fast rules DO apply. You can Google it if you want.
I guarantee if a university teacher were to correct that sentence, they'd mark it the way I suggested.

Wouldn't an intelligent, interventionist, power over reality negate free will? Whould that not just be the illusion of free will then?
Posted by Zombie0915 on Nov-07-2006 22:15:
I dont know,
but surely we have all had those circumstances happen to us that make you think that there is someting out there. Maybe it doesnt intervene in all situations, but I like to believe that there are some wierd twists in the way things happen, that seem to be prearranged.

Aah, but what if you have free will and the universe knows which way you're going to choose, so you're still choosing, but it knows which path you'll choose?

oh, i see. so if i believe there are fairies living on the dark side of the moon, its merely a matter of opinion and cannot be described as "stupid"? if you say so. "purpose" is just a way for you to interpret an occurence. it says more about the person interpreting it than any form of cosmic control. ascribing some sort of meaning to life's chances is unsubstantiated superstition. and as such, im gonna call it stupid. i dont care if you agree or not.

I find the entire question of fate/destiny to be a little silly. You will always hear the arguments of pre-determination vs. free will and inevitably someone will question who is pulling our strings or what their mysterious master plan is. It's all hog wash. I don't believe that all of our actions are pre-determined by any outside force, however, I do believe that in any given situation there is only one course of action / reaction we can take. This is not determined by anything outside of ourselves, it is determined by our experience, motivations, thought processes and beliefs. What ever decision I make in a given situation is the only decision I could make because it is the only one I would allow myself to make. The only way we could possibly go against our inclinations is if we had foreknowlege of the results of our intended action, since we don't we are destined to do whatever it is we do. |
exactly right. i am far more likely to subscribe to a theory of divinity than i am for some idea about pre-determined outcomes. especially since those that believe in fate or destiny dont actually think about what their ideas entail. thus far not one believer in this thread has articulated any kind of rational thought-process that indicates they have given the idea real consideration. they just came to believe it because it suited their life at a particular time. thats just not rational.

exactly right. intelligence is how you use and process information. it has little to do with "knowing" anything.
i AM doing something with my life. i am educating the unfortunate COR masses, whilst also passing time during the 9-5 office grind. attacking me without attacking my position isn't gonna get me to shut the fuck up im afraid.

Processing information and deep thinking. If you talk as if you are above everyone, which you do, you are no more intelligent than someone who has no knowledge of anything at all. You should get out more, and learn how to truly interact with people, maybe then you will understand how to not only talk to others, but treat them with respect as well.

That's some life you are leading. Being a slave to some private company, and posting on the internet. You are reaching for the stars.
You are a disgrace to any intellectual. Stephen Hawking would be very disappointed in the way you act.

yes yes, abrasive techniques are less useful i know. what can i say? the boy has no patience... and youre right, assuming im smarter than people doesn't make it so. but i will have you note, that i started by treating people's opinions with disrespect- thats not the same thing. opinions or ideas are not equal, and as such, much earn respect rather than be given it a priori. what actually spawned the flames was my contention that

not true. all the papers ive written have been well researched and argued, and not the least bit abrasive. but this isnt a uni paper and the same standards do not apply. and when you have idiots chiming in with empty platitudes devoid of anything but cliched rubbish, then the standards begin to sink pretty fast.
and im still waiting for you hokus-pocus subscribers to provide any macro illustration of how destiny works.

You said you appreaciate goats. So does Xeno. You could farm goats together - I promise it will be fun.
If you don't like that, just smoke a cigarette with your best friend and relax, dude.
Look how famous they'd become. They even draw comics.

That's what makes the world a colorful place. I don't care if there are 'idiots' in here, or in the real world. I have plenty of friends and coworkers that stimulate my mind so much, that I am satisfied at the end of the day. I hang out with some 'idiots' who have been my friends for almost my whole life. When I was 6, I didn't care how smart they were, and I sure as hell don't now because we all respect each other.

your final answer was that it was better to be alive than dead... because... "it just is" scientifically.
i lost the log in the format, but i remember CLEARLY you saying "well, that's a scientific `it just is`"
in any case, you might have made, perhaps, a decent argument disproving the implications the theory had, not the theory itself.
