My last drinking citation was given to me in my own home!!! I had some friends over, and unfortunately was the only one under 21. My former neighbors downstairs were crackhead junkies that called the cops whenever we walked too loudly (they even called, accusing us of 'whispering to them through the floorboards'). So a cop showed up for a "noise complaint", I answered the door since I lived there. I had only a few beers and was far from being in the bag. I wasn't holding ANYTHING and nothing could be seen from where he was standing outside the door. He was some rookie prick with something to prove...I guess he smelt it on my breath, and he wrote out a ticket...no breathalizer or anything. WTF

You know, when I wrote what I did, I was anticipating a story just like this one...

Yeah, it's illegal for minors to drink alcohol. Like I said though, if you're not causing trouble or making lots of noise, then they aren't going to catch you. It's bullshit you can get in trouble for drinking in your own home, but they only know about it if you are throwing some huge party or doing something else high profile. As for your downstairs neighbours, Caela...well, that just sucks. Sounds like their fault, not the law. haha

You're the one who gets thrown in jail for being drunk...

The only times I've actually consumed alcohol have been in the last six months, and I'm 19. I seriously fail to see how not drinking makes somebody a loser. It doesn't, and if you think that drinking is a requirement for being "cool" then that's a bit disappointing.

What are you on about? Being drunk in public is soooooooo cool!

Posted by Caela on Jan-06-2007 22:01:

what? you're telling me in high school, you never got drunk with your friends? or went to parties and played beruit? or drank after prom? pfffff...then again this IS an internet forum.

edit: keep in mind, i DO live in vermont. no that's not a good reason to drink...but if you're from small town america, then you know what it's like to experience true boredom. growing up here, 90% of kids drank. in burlington, there are 5 colleges/universities around town...lots and lots of bored kids = lots and lots of drinking. on a weekend night, you literally can walk down the main streets, and walk into a random party, play a few games of beruit and bounce to another party. it's just the vibe here...i didn't mean to come off as "you have to drink to be cool" but from where i'm coming from, here, if you don't drink you don't really have a social life because everything revolves around that. sad but true.

Yup. And smoking makes you look cool. And shooting up means you're a fucking God.

Nope.

That'd be a negatory.

Nein.

Why? Because it's something that I simply chose not to do? I had plenty of fun in high school without a single drop of alcohol. I made some great friends and had memorable experiences, none of which I regret nor would like to alter in any way.

You don't have to get drunk to have fun. You don't have to get drunk to be cool. It might be something that you and your friends do for fun, and that's great. It doesn't make you or your friends better than those who didn't, because it's something subjective.

Sorry if I'm ranting, I've just always felt that looking down on someone because of subjectivity is lame.

Sounds as if you need to leave Vermont, unless you want to drink your life away. You have almost every form of 'bored' and 'drink', in nearly every sentence.

EDIT: I've lived on Long Island, NY - another boring place to live, for 25 years in a row. Never once, have I used that as an excuse to socialize with alcohol in my hands.

I am just sensing a little confusion is all.

Like, it sounds like you kind of like to question the establishment, but don't really scrutinize 'social norms'? Kind of an odd double-standard.

I'm from all over the place - I used to live in South Dakota. I used to live in Las Vegas. Boredom or not, young people drink all over the place, especially in College towns, so 'drinking is all there is to do' doesn't really hold much water (pun? No? no.) unless you are a teenager growing up in rural Siberia.

Drinking alcopops doesn't really count though.

Interesting story...

3 years ago I watched an emergency rescue crew cut a family out of their sedan after it had been hit by a drunk driver, a repeat offender drunk driver with no license (his license had been taken away due to prior DUI offenses, some of those offenses occurred while he was underage), the guy was blindingly drunk, didn't see the stop sign as he came to the top of the hill on the street I lived on, he plowed into the sedan at 60 miles per hour, he didn't even brake.

He killed the driver and the passenger but not their 3 year old daughter riding in the back seat, she was in critical condition for some time in the hospital, but ultimately she survived, unfortunately for her, she'll never really know her parents thanks to someone who thought it was fine to ignore the laws of this country.

The drunk driver was on parole at the time for previous DUI offenses when this happened.

It was heartbreaking to watch this story unfold and I didn't even know any of these people.

Bottom line: the laws are in place for everyone's safety, not because lawmakers want to ruin everyone's fun, it's because shit like this happens more than you want to know.

Drinking a few beers underage and waking up in detox...not so much.

I understand, but something you might want to think about is that the laws are made for the greater good of all of the people, not just one or two.

You may excercise complete common sense while under the influence, that doesn't mean everyone else does.
Some people handle themselves very well while under the influence, some people get aggressive and belligerent, some people like the one mentioned in the story I posted lose any ability to excercise common sense, they judge their abilities poorly and innocent people pay the consequences.

I'm sure you know it is impossible to tailor every law to every individual specifically, law enforcemnet would go crazy trying to determine what is right and what is wrong for each and every person and their effectiveness would be rendered useless.
So the laws are written as a generalization for everyone's safety.

Just some food for thought.

Sounds like you really aren't taking responsability for your actions. You did something that was illegal and you aren't wanting to act like an adult in regards to that.

As far as I am concerned you are just waiting for this situation to happen to you again in the future ( oh wait ... this isn't your first time! )

Don't try to give the rest of the people on this forum a lesson about being cool. You got busted and you couldn't get out of the situation without it hurting you. Sounds like are the one lacking in the cool department.

My advice which I posted before but I'm assuming you intentionally brushed off is to arm yourself to be able to respond before if you were to be confronted to the police again. . . .
Don't want to ask reasonably and avoid trying to get caught again well then you're just waiting for more problems around the corner.
