i only have one since im a fuckin newbie...first ever time - guv 10th year anni
was probably the most memorable night i've had in a looooooong loooooong time
without dating myself too much...
one (of many) favourite GUV parties was Smirnoff Experience 2001
The line-up was (in my recollection):

the place was an abosolute rager, with Smirnoff footing the DJ tab (almost 90,000 in dj fees)the place was on fire from the beginning. Lovely Smiroff ladies were handing out what seemed like and endless array of drink tickets. I remember standing at the bar (which was only serving smirnoff products of course) as these really messed up guys would ask the bartender for ryes and gingers, jack and cokes, the bartender would noy yes, hand over 6 vodka anythings, take the money and watch them walk away!!! priceless! Every dj was in rinse mode that night...and even though i was a true and true trance head then, Dj Dan stole the night..at one point Hatiras walked up to him with a track he had just finished on CDR, Dan took it our of his hand, and put it right in the CDJ,(yes he was using CDJ's in 2001)and dropped it on the crowd, also, feeling much braver then then i am now, i got a little weary of bouncing back and forth between rooms (as it took like 30 mins with the huge crowd) so, by accident i discovered the secret passage (security and paramedics use it) between Koolhaus and Guv!! WOW~~~utilizing my best Donovon Bailey sprinting techniques, i would open the door and rip down the corridor..VOILA...Guv to Koolhaus in 8 seconds~~~i did it about 4 times, before they tried to tackle me down, alas with the uppers on my side, i was able to avoid being detained!!! SOLID NIGHT...

hmmm hard to just pick three but here goes nothing...
1)Lawler Sunrise Set 10.06.06
The energy was incredible...i remember hearing about the legendary parties he was responsible with the sun rising on skybar, and had to check it out this time. WoW he definatly didn't dissapoint and dropped bomb after bomb....definatly a night i wont soon forget.
2) Labour 2005
What a night....wow from Deep Dish to Armin the night was definatly complete. However, for me it was Digweed who stole the show. I remember standing on the stage right behind him just completely amazed at what this guy was doing behind the decks, what an incredible experience.
3) Freedom 2006
This was a hard choice. I remember being extremely unimpressed with Deep Dish's set, as well as the overall line-up for this. However, Seb Fontaine in The Drink brought the goods and delivered one of the best sets ive ever heard there.
Notable Mention: NINE aka when Carl Cox played till 10am+ - fuckin eh!

1. Deep Dish - GU Recording Party 2002
Amazing nite. We were all on the stage at the front (where else?) dancing it up from the first tune to the very very end. The best moment I can remember is Clocks (played the 2nd time) with the doors open and the sunlight streaming in.
2. Danny Tenaglia - April 2000
Went by myself and had a blast! Danced my feet off that and got what Danny is all about. From house to vocal to deep beats to you name it - it was special.
3. Sasha & Steve Lawler � June 2005 @ Guvernment/Sky Bar
They played downstairs in the main room & then Skybar individually, but from 7 am back-to-back until the cops shut it down at 9:30 am. Great morning watching the sunrise to a hazy day while we all partied it up overlooking the lake. Was so surreal as you hear about these jaw-dropping parties somewhere else but for once, the party was in TO!

Indeed...the first installment of the Lawler in the AM (AM/PM parties)
was pretty magical...the Toronto Police walking over to Lawler to get him to shut off the music was classic. Nevermind, Sasha standing there in his sunglasses, turns to Lawler and says something to the effect of, 'its going off up here, eh?" Lawler turns back and says get your tracks then! They go back to back, one track for one track..simply devastating. At the end, Lawler grabbing the mic, pointing at us says, " You lot is proppa!"

Goldclub Presnts Thomas Bangaltar and Friends
-this one was on a monday night..in what is now the deluxe lounge.
It was Thomas Bangaltar (Daft Punk), DJ Falcon and two other guys, im pretty sure one of them was Phillpe Zdar (cassius)...these guys did a Dj fusion thing with Bangaltar and Zdar on processors, laptops and keyboards!!! SIMPLY DAZZLING. they literally were creating french-funk-house music on the spot, whilst Falcon mixed in records over top!!! DISGUSTING!!!!
glad this thread got resurrected...

Danny Howells - Guvernment (unsure which one)
after one particularily long outing from one Danny Howells, roughly around 9-10am, standing outside the Guvernment...
Danny Howells was out there with Jose (Guv booker) having a smoke. Walking up to the door (which has long since been closed) is one extremely mangled female partier. Having been kicked out earlier for her state of being, she decided to return to the club figuring that enough time had passed they wouldnt recognize her, anyway...as the bouncers are trying politely to tell her the event is over, shes not really following as she's devastated and also english didnt seem to beher specialty anyway. So..in her agitation, she removes one of her shoes and wacks one of the bouncers in the head with it, and turns and tears off in a dead sprint down the street. The bouncers don't really do anything (more out of shock then procedure), but...
Danny Howells decides he should. So he tears off after the girl..which then makes Jose tear off after Danny Howells, which then makes the entire security staff tear after what appears to be a distraught Jose...so now you have, Screwed Up Girl with one shoe, followed by Danny Howells, Follwed By Jose, Follwed by all security staff...Danny yelling..."love, love...come on, its alright...just a party love, come one!!!"
you cant make this stuff up, its so good!
-then of course there was the night the kid crawled up into the rafters and crashed through Charles Kabouth's ceiling in his office!!!

ive been to alot of parties...
and for the most part, have always surrounded myself with good people,
who go out to have a good time, without the drama...
hence the good stories...
as they return to my brain, i will put some more up here...
ive been going to the Guv since 97/98...
its amazing to see where its gone and hopefully where its going.

So while we were havin the times of our lives in Guvy all this was going on and we had no idea! We thought they had left earlier. So we leave, go home have our sketchy morning and do our thing later to find out a few days later this guy who went nuts came with a friend of ours that we were there with.......good times, good times. I will always remember all the sketchy faces comin out of Guvy main room to that. Cops and firetrucks everywhere. Must have thought they were all busted. |
