I used to run cross country for my county when I was 11.

So for quite a while then. My good stamina comes from playing football - Up until recently I would play two 90 minute games over the weekend, and then one 7-aside game midweek. Plus one training session, also midweek. And on top of that I would also fit in a long run once a week as well.

Running a sub-3 marathon has been a long term goal of mine. It's very hard to get a place in the London marathon, but the company I work for get 8 gold bond guaranteed places a year - As long as I can get the sponsorship money, one of those places is mine!

Hm.. I've been thinking of joining that marathon, but is it really that hard to get in? Afaik, you can easily subscribe over the Internet to join the Amsterdam marathon. It may not be as renowned as the London one, but it's still a major event with quite a few international top competitors..

Pretty decent time you've set as well.. It would be a hell of a personal achievement if I'd make it just inside 3.30.

That's wicked.

I'd made it a long term goal of mine a year back to get fit enough to run a decent marathon time and enter into the London marathon. I normally run about 10 miles a day, 3/4 times a week. If I'm motoring along, I can normally do about 8 mins/mile, so that would be 1hr 20 mins a session.

i used to run A LOT when I ran in college. Up to 85 miles a week. Now I am burned out and lazy and couldn't possibly do that kind of training again. Haha. I would like to but partying has completely taken over at the moment.

My times were 2:00 (800m), 3:54 (1500m), 14:45 (5000m), 30:52 (10000m)

My advice is to listen to your body and not do too much too soon. Build up gradually. It all starts with the shoes...so make sure you have shoes that fit properly and make sure to replace them when they are worn out. Hydration is key. Also a lot of stretching.

Well, looks like I need some new shoes then! I'm not gonna start till I have a good pair, which I don't.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

2:00 minutes for the 800m is really good - I would urge you - or a bit less drastically, recommend that you take up running again!

Yea, it's pretty bloody hard! You apply through an official ballot just like you would when applying for any other marathon in the world - But so many people want to do it with it being such a prestigious event and all, that a ridiculous amount of people end up getting rejected. We get hundreds of people every year try and apply through our company for those 8 places after getting rejected - It's quite sad really.

LOL the 1500m/5k/10k times are better than the 800m time. I am better at the longer distances...never had too much speed. Although I ran a 53 second 400m once. HAHA.

In through the nose, out through the mouth.

I run anywhere between 7 and 10 miles between sat. and sun. (only 2 days I have time to workout) depending on how my body is feeling - sometimes I can really push it, sometimes I cant. I do it on an elliptical though because my knees cant handle running on a track or outside, my right knee feels like its on fire after like 5 mins.

Well that's shit. I've had a look at the application for the Amsterdam marathon, and that's just a matter of 'apply and you're in'. But with that being held in October (and me being away for over three weeks in September) that's really too early to do a marathon. Looking at the 1/2 marathon there now.

I'll probably just try and hope I'm lucky for the London marathon next April.. Although with my luck, I already think I know the answer.

Depends on your weight ratio really as well as a few other factors. It's relatively average, ten minutes for a mile and a half. It'd be rather hard to get under that. Though I might be able to do better if I knew that that was all I was running.
