- This has been one of the major topics of discussion surrounding Hockey as you're aware. Baseball, there's rarely any contact between players, football ---they wear equipment and is a full contact sport - unlike soccer/futbol. It's the major difference between European based sports and aggressive American sports.

2) I know u just did not say they don't dive in other sports???? you've got to be shitting me~! Isn't that a major complain in hockey? what about basketball? have you ever watched a game? they all over do fouls...because it'll get them to the line. The only 2 sports you won't see it too much is Baseball & Football.. that's because (as mentioned before) Baseball - there's not that much contact between opposing teams, and Football is a full contact sport where they're fully padded and expect to get hit and hit others.

If you have ever played a sport where little to no equipment is used such as Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, etc... then you would know first hand...that landing on the floor/ground or being directly hit by another player hurts 100x more because you're either running at full speed, jumping, or whatever else and to then be hit is like running into a wall. You can't compare it to sports where you use full body equipment like hockey or football.

ok regarding the mans sport thing... yeah i agree that probably isnt the bext way of looking at things but you know what i mean....

and about diving.... there isnt a big problem in hockey with diving... i played hockey since i was young and never have i seen someone dive.... like i am not saying that no one has dived in the history of hockey but it is not as close to as big of a problem as it is in soccer.... like year there probably have been instances where people have dived in the nhl (like pretend to be triped cuz thats basically the only thing you can fake) but it is very uncommon... at least in north america, havent watched much european hockey

and there isnt diving in basketball either, its called "drawing a foul", and its not done by pretending that you've been fouled when you havent been, drawing a foul is doing somehting such as driving to the basket when theres a bunch of defenders there because you know someone will foul you to prevent you from scoring..... they dont just go to the basket and then fall down to pretend that they were pushed....

yeah i know that you can get hurt in other sports too, especially the ones without equipment, i am not saying you have to get hurt for a sport to be 'cool'

the problem with soccer isnt that there is not much contact... the problem is that people are pretending to be fouled when no foul was committed....

i am not here to bash soccer, i am here to bash the people who feel that its alright to pretend to be fouled just to give their team a scoring opportunity.... if they want to get a goal they should earn it the old fashion way, not through trickery

i did not mean to say that america doesnt like contact sports, its just that fact that the players fake getting hit... and that seems to be more important than getting back up, getting back into the play and trying to get an honest goal for your team

^Part of the problem is the consistency in refereeing. Some refs give fouls more easily than others, which encourages players to seek easy calls from refs.

Mind you, reffing a game is incredibly hard, to see whether a foul is legit or not.

Well, it's Argies 1 - Mehico 0.

Entertaining game so far. These kids can play

Posted by Yohan on Jul-16-2007 01:38:

Argentina 1-0 Mexico

Argies tightened up defence in 2nd half and Mexico had trouble string passes together and shackled Dos Santos tighter than a virgin's arsehole.

wow...maybe Toronto is becoming like a real soccer (football) city!

Gotta love the tazer!

the match was a flat out travesty and disgrace to the game .. even worse was the aftermath riot outside

the tournament was going so well here too up until then... not surprised that FIFA hasn't posted anything on their site about it until after the "investigation"..

Posted by SPANIARD on Jul-20-2007 14:59:

There is no one to blame but FIFA. They might as well put in the kids who volunteer as refs.

Ole...,ole, ole, Chile,...Chile!

It was fun being there for all the right and wrong reasons.

The Good...

The Chilean fans who took up the whole section by the corner flag were awesome. Did anyone see the second fan who ran on the field wearing flippers? A few flares or firecrackers. Oh ya, there were a couple of world class goals.

The Bad...

People fighting in the stands. Tossing corn, beer and water at the ref. The fans who were throwing back far from the pitch were just raining garbage on their own fans. Argentinian embellishment.

Posted by Zentac_75 on Jul-20-2007 15:59:

I was at the game and definately saw some shit start to go down with 5 minutes left in the game. A group of chilean fans (these guys were 40+ years old!!!) were starting shit taunting/teasing even slapping an argentinian man (He was 40+ too!!!). It was about to explode as Argentinians fled to his aid. (I was thinking of the Socs and the Greasers showdown, don't know why).

Then a dozen officers appeared from no where and made a wall between the two groups.

I decided then to leave before they started tossing shit.

Why do sports fans feel the need to take out their frustrations on each other ???

Politics, these two countries have been at each others throats for centuries.

i was at the game too, the ref was a dumbass, ruined the game within the first 10min

Posted by Rodrico on Jul-20-2007 19:44:

Shame what went down, could of been a really good match otherwise, though Argentina had some really spectacular goals. Im shocked that ref got outta there alive.

it would be a good game but i'm pretty sure Argentina would still win, they definitely outplayed them and are better technically. Argentinian players are a bunch of pussies though, at some points i saw 4players laying on the ground crying with their faces covered...italians, portuguese and argentinian players are pro's in that

I agree almost entirely. I don't totally blame the ref on the red card. He got fooled, bottom line. We can call the players pussies all we want, but we have to call them winners too. They're exagerations are, and have ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS been part of soccer (at least the 2 decades I have watched).

SURE its a pussy move, BUT it IS a part of the game. ALL the pros do it. ALL the european teams are MASTERS of the dive. You see everyone do it, at all levels of competition. I'll go so far as to say that you don't see all of it because some of the players are THAT good at it.

Just search 'soccer' 'diving' in you tube for HUNDREDS of more examples.

Again, pussy yes, but I've excepted it as part of the game, and don't blame the refs all because they don't see it in slow motion from an aerial view.

EXAMPLE. Henri in the world cup against spain...at full speed you can't tell me the ref or ANYONE (including the announcer) else didn't think he got elbowed to the head...only in slow motion do you see what a SNEAKY FUCK Henri is (he is a jedi knight when it comes to diving), but you have to call him winner after the game.

Final game of Argentina vs Czech Republic on CBC now.

Austria vs Chile 3rd place match was surprisingly good. Was a goalkeeper duel that saw something like 17 saves between both keepers. Highlight of the match was Chilean keeper off balance, jumping backwards to slap the ball right at the goal line. Chile won 1-0 from a goal that's up there with goals of the tourney.

Come to think of it, there's been a lot of classy goals in this tourney

^ TOTALLY AGREE...(its an exciting game when the ref doesn't cripple one of the teams)

So upset I'm not at both these games...was offered a ticket (includes both games) for $150 but my sorry ass is stuck at home crunching quarterly tax numbers (or procrastinating on TA)

Craig Forrest is slowly getting pissed off at the refs... Again. LOL

between 30:00 and 35:00 I saw 3 czech players DIVE... not complaining just pointing out how funny it is because the Czechs look like GIANTS compared to most of the Argentine players, yet they still go down with a graze LOL.

Dunno who's reffing this game, but they go down easy because the refs let them get away with soft fouls

Nice game. Ref smartened up a bit and didn't kill the game in the 2nd half.

Czech Republic took the lead with a world class goal by Fenney, but Aguero for Argentina equalized 2 mins later with a clinical finish after being open from a through ball. Zarate scores from a what seems to be a bit of easy goal 3 mins from time and Argentina wins 2-1.

Overall, I'd say good tourney. The level of officiating kinda sucked and too much temper from the young players, but there has been really classy games and some great goals.
