lol, not that i'm necessarily trying to defend Anna, or myself (because i whole-heartedly pointed out this guy's spelling mistakes), let me remind you that:
1) he was the one who mentioned that he was smarter than Anna, or whoever, because he finished high school at 16 and is moving to secondary education soon
2) he is trying to make a concise, educated (wtf, does that even exist on the intarwebz?) argument about something he disagrees from the rest of us. The least he could do is TRY to come across with his writing as appropriately smart...

but you're right, it's not the matter at hand, but he asked for it with his comments on how brilliant he was.

You're referring to Canada? What free education exactly? Oh, you mean our amazing public schools, that are free up to the point of post-secondary education, and that have standards and test scores that continuously rank amongst the lowest in the world...

Ok, forgive me bitterness there, but I think its important to note, although it is off topic, that the 'free' education in Canada, even in Canada is worth very little. And most European countries, along with many in the middle-east, asia, and so forth, offer free POST-SECONDARY education...

Anyways..

Why not? If he has any intellect at all, he'll either get the point, or have another clever rebuttal. Most of the other arguments pointed out at him had their self-justification based on his poor spelling, and not actually a logical reply to his comments...so Ania, thanks for the well crafted reply.

Hmm, this isn't exactly that great. I'm doing a year of school in France this year, and universities here (with the exception of the grands coles which can actually cost a lot of money) are free. However, even though the school I'm going to is supposed to be a really good business school in France, I feel the quality of education here I'm getting is much lower than I get in Canada. I hear a lot of North American students studying in France complain about this.

My university education in Canada is fucking expensive, but I certainly get what I pay for. I'd much rather pay the amount that I do and get the education that I get in Canada than pay nothing and get the education that's available here in France.

Did it sound like I was comparing Canada to Finland??? I think I know what type of education system Canada has. And yes, some parts in the world have better (hence why I'm capitalising on my Dutch passport for my doctorate), but really. This IS off topic. Try going to the school in Haiti that my mom teaches at. Or in Malawi, Tanzania..Kenya (I realise there are countries that might further prove my point, but I have more intimate knowledge on the schools there)

On the whole I hear what you're saying, but I still see it as a good thing. There are definitely varying levels of post secondary education here, and arguably some schools are much better than others; the prices of their respective tuitions also reflect this. However, at least there is the option of free post secondary, comparatively to Canada, which has none. Either way, way off OT of this thread anyways.

In Canada (like most countries) you can earn the privilege to a free post-secondary education if you want it bad enough.

Furthermore, the fact that there are waiting lists for international students wanting to attend our universities (despite increasing internation student tuitions) is not consistent with your theory.

French students studying here say the same thing, but you need to know something. They have a free education system, and basically everyone can get into university and get a diploma. But if you're really good and want to get somewhere in life in France you need to get into a Grande cole and its very difficult and hard to go through. But at least there's a choice for those who are good enough and bright. In Canada there's no such Universities, anyone can basically get into almost every program.

do you have any stats regarding this?
as far as I know, uni.'s are tripping over themselves to get peeps like me to attend, because our tuition is so much higher then of the domestic students

Ehhh, I don't know about that. Grande coles are extremely hard to get into, but I heard from people studying at them that once you get into them, they aren't much more difficult than the normal universities. It's just the reputation that gets you places.

Lets just say that a class full of brigh(er) people makes things much more intresting for everyone plus all the connections you make there.

lol maybe because you're from Cyprus. That's the excuse some of my cousins from Pakistan got plus it was hard for my ex to get into the programs she wanted because there was a quota for int'll students. No stats, just experience.

Posted by Time2Burn on Dec-04-2007 18:29:

I think the real conclusion of this thread is that the Canadian education system sucks by somehow allowing this fuck nut to graduate at 16.

Where the hell are the standards you would find in many of the countries immigrants come from?

Wow, how did I miss this?

Shelley, thank you.

Fayaree (re: Monarchy) What Yohan said.

AGQ - I'm taking the forgiving stance here as the boy is 17 and most 17 year olds have a skewed view - racism in schools (certainly in mine in the UK, they had separate times for white and indian kids to leave the playground) may have left a bitter taste in his mouth - we can only hope that life shows him that race/creed/colour/socio-economic status of people has sweet eff all to do with whether they are a good person or not.

Immigrant conversation in general - It is damn hard to get into Canada!
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigr...illed/index.asp

Do the self-assessment test to see if you would qualify to get in
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigr...ssess/index.asp

And people have the right to bring their families over - now, I personally don't think this should be stretched to 400 relatives but immediate family - fine.

My final point is... If you think someone is here illegally - TELL THE AUTHORITIES and quit your whinging. I hate people who moan and do fuck all about it.

ah I see, weird I must tell you!
they even give us entrance scholarships
then again, maybe it's just a policy at York?

what universities were they trying to get into, if you don't mind me asking?

+1!!!

OMG I totally forgot to add that point in my original post; I was thinking the same thing!! People who see gross injustices and don't act (if they can) are guilty of conspiracy imo.

lol yeah probably
Ryerson was an ass and didn't offer me accommodation (so basically told, just come and stay in a hotel lol)

a girl from my class back in CY got into St. George campus, and another got into McGill (bio/chem programs I believe)

so maybe you're right, country where the applicant is sending the papers from could matter
