Saw it. A little too flaky for me, if I may be so bold. A lot of the characters in the movie spouted pseudo-intellectual philosophical nonsense (which I guess you'd expect...). That was disappointing. But the movie was still kinda cool to watch.

How often do you have lucid dreams anyway?

Posted by crchingtiger on Jan-29-2004 00:37:

this thread reminded me of vanilla sky...
crazy movie...so good...

but yeah, i can lucid dream...
usually it will be because i've woken up in the middle of a really crazy one so i proceed to fall back asleep and continue the story...

one night when i was sleeping, i was fully aware that i was dreaming...
so in the dream, i decided to do whatever the hell i wanted because i knew i could...

i'm in a lot of near death situations in my dreams but i usually try and mastermind my way out of them
i can frequently continue the dreams i've already have...
sometimes it happens spontaneously, too...
like i've dreamt a dream 2 days in a row...but then other times, i'll have a dream, forget it, but sometime later...whether it's a month, year, etc...it will come back...

this is y i get deja vu all the freakin' time

I'll agree with the pseudo-intellectual nonsense bit. I just really identified with the part where they talked about learning how to lucid dream, and that it happened after you become aware that you are dreaming. I realized this a long time ago, prolly when I was about 8 or 9 (I still remember the dream too), been having lucid dreams ever since. Sometimes I have them more than others, it just depends on how I feel about the dream (some are better to "watch" than to participate). So I'd say I have at least one lucid dream every 2 weeks or so.

Sweetness. When I was 4 or 5, I was having nightmares and decided to do something about them. I told myself that since MY brain generated them, that I should be able to do something about it. My first attempt was pretty rudimentary... yelling "WAKE UP!" inside the dream. Amazingly, it worked. I say "amazingly" because the challenge in the first place is to get to a point where you can consciously choose to say/do something. I guess since I'd never considered that an obstacle, it was easy to overcome. Been having lucid dreams ever since. In a good month I'll have 5-10, but recently they've been falling off

oh man my honors psychology project this semester is on dreaming in general, incl. lucid dreaming. Its wicked hard to study though, because everybody has their own ideas on what happens and why. Why do y'all think we dream? heh maybe i can include this suff as case studies in the paper

Wow, excellent. To me, the question "why do we dream" is a misguided one. It's no more easily explainable than "why do we have qualia (awareness)?" I believe it was Carl Jung who claimed that we dream perpetually, and only at night is our consciousness quiet enough to experience it (correct me if I'm wrong here).

One of my friends, also an accomplished lucid dreamer, says he believes this theory. He occasionally for fun blacks out (apparently it gives him a huge rush to wake up...). But while he's under, he experiences dreams quite vividly.

Why we dream about what we do is a more interesting question (to me) than why we dream. Of course, that's easily overcome by dreaming about what we want to... the topic of this thread Who says there should be a part of your mind that you're not in control of?

Posted by Striderg on Jan-29-2004 13:00:

Yeah, when i was younger i used to have alot of dreams. After having alot of these dream i started to be able to control my dreams. I could pretty much do anything, like if i wanted to fly in my dream, i would fly, or i could change the entire scenario, it was cool. I don't have many dreams anymore, so it doesn't happen anhy more, but it was cool when it did. I used to be able to force myself to wake up from my dreams when i wanted to aswell.

Posted by Striderg on Jan-29-2004 13:14:

The way i started having lucid dreams was almost the same way as Flyboy217. I used to have alot of really bad nightmares, so one day i decide that if i was gonna have a nighmare, i would try to wake up from it. The way i did it was different. First I would have to come to the realization that i was in a dream, then when i wanted to wake up, i would close my eyes in the dream world and count to 3, on the count of three i would open my eye and i would open my eyes to the real world. It was a weird sensation. After that, i could realize when i was in a dream and instead of just waking up when i wanted to, i would just try to change the dream. I could just change the entire setting and everything. But every once and a while the dream would almost try to take control again. Like someone would start cahsing me or something and i would run. THen i would have to realize again that i was in a dream, and then i could change wat was happening.

Have you guys every had a dream that some else had aswell? One day i woke up and remembered my dream, i told it to mhy sister and my brother, and to my amazment, we all had the same dream. The weird part was that we were all in each others dream. It was like we were all in the same dream at the same time. It wasn't an exciting dream tho. We were at a train station, and there was an icecream store, so we bought icecream.... that's it. lol. It seems i have alot of messed up dreaming experiences.

Does anyone know if there is any difference between lucid dreaming, and astral projection?

Yeah there's a huge difference. Lucid dreaming is a scientifically validated phenomenon where you are aware in your dreams. Astral projection is where your "soul" supposedly reaches some sort of "ethereal plane." The latter is more akin to what are called OOBEs (out-of-body experiences), except in OOBEs you're in the real world. The connection is that many people say that you can reach astral projection/OOBEs from lucid dreaming, and they feel almost the same. This is also why most consider them hogwash. But the jury is still out

Amazing, someone who's actually (claimed to have) had a shared dream! Have you had more than one?

Well here's one study that proves likewise

How lucid dreamers conceptualize their "non-waking experience" is a function of their general knowledge. Alternative modes of conceptualizing the lucid dream experience include the notions that one is undergoing an "out of body experience" (OBE) or an "astral projection" (reviewed in DeGracia, 1997). The forms taken by ones reference to state depend on ones semantic framework. So, the semantic component of the statement "I am dreaming" reflects a knowledge structure conceptualizing the experience as a form of dreaming. A reference to state can just as easily take the forms "I am having an OBE" or "I am having an astral projection". As one of us stated previously: "lucid dreams and OBEs [and we will add here, astral projections] are necessarily distinguished by only one essential feature: how the person interprets the experience at the time" (LaBerge, 1985, p. 234) In other words, these are not phenomenologically distinct categories of experience but are alternative conceptualizations of the intrinsic variety present in lucid dream experiences.

what you mean by "rush"

Posted by {b.s.e.} on Feb-02-2004 09:03:

They're exhilirating. I have weird dreams, all the time. I wouldn't call it lucid, but I consciously know that when I am dreaming it's all a dream, so I'm aware that what is happening is not real, and my subconscious usually takes over and sends me on a wicked adventure.

Posted by DjLiMZ. on Feb-02-2004 13:12:

i lucid dream quite often sometimes dunno why but i had 3 lucid dreams in a week once :P

Posted by Flyboy217 on Feb-02-2004 15:13:

Since last Wednesday, I've become lucid 4 times already. I say " have become lucid" rather than "had lucid dreams" because I don't put a bound on their length or on how many I have that night. Most of mine this past week have been very weak, but at least one was pretty decent. I thank this thread! The more you read about lucid dreaming, the better your chances of experiencing it...

Posted by Flyboy217 on Feb-03-2004 13:20:

Whoa... 3 reasonably long lucid dreams last night, making it a total of 5 nights in the past week!

Posted by whiskers on Feb-03-2004 14:13:

i just had a dream within a dream and in that dream i realized that i was dreaming and that the dream was a recurring dream.

Posted by DjLiMZ. on Feb-03-2004 14:30:

had a lucid dream again last night :P wierd because i was traped in my house and there was fire downstairs and i was by the window upstairs, my only way out was to jump outta the window then somehow i knew i was dreaming then thought i'll try flying outta the window and it worked :P was an amazing feeling!.
