Go to a party, listen to the music, have fun, and stop worshipping DJs.

Yeah, Sasha and Diggers look like death when they're playing, they're no Sven Vath.

I nicely asked him for a picture when he was by himself not doing anything and before I could finish my sentence he looked at me and kept walking, leaving me standing in the middle of the room mortified.

Maybe he just wants to be left alone sometimes. Why do you people think that you have the right to talk to people just because you admire them? Maybe he thought you were trying to pick him up?

i get like that too before gigs

i like to take the last half hour or so before i'm on and i go off by myself, all my friends are used to it by now and know when i'm in my own place and have actually "stood guard" before, not letting anyone bother me while i pace around looking pissed off but i'm gathering my thoughts and i get a feel for the vibe in the venue

the last thing i want to deal with is someone coming up and disturbing me during this pre-gig ritual and am usually pretty curt and dismissive when that happens

sometimes after i'm done on the decks i'll grab a drink and go off by myself again, reflect and mellow out a little for about 10 mins or so then return to the party or head to the afterparty, then i can finally fully relax and really enjoy myself, not that i don't while i play, but there's always that little pressure to perform well and it all melts away when i'm done

i always thought this was a little strange but i guess i'm not alone with needing a little time to myself prior and after a show

i can see why they seem to blow people off or ignore them

I don't really get the point here.
When you talk to a random guy in the club he has every right to tell you to fuck off. Why would it be different with the DJ?
You pay to see their show, not to make conversation. What's so great about having a 2 minute pointless and superficial chat with the DJ anyway?

Because they should respect their fans. There is no excuse for acting like a dick....it it weren't for us they would be playing to empty rooms.

When your mind is preoccupied with the gig, the sound, the set, the possibility of your gear failing... last thing you want to be doing is talking to random dudes. I've done it, I get snarky at gigs, and I'm not proud of it. Weird to hear that Sasha, after 20 years, still has that fear. I guess some people learn to control it, some don't. Maybe that's why he's such a great DJ/producer, because he always wants things to go best, never thinks "eh, they won't care about a trainwreck or two"

+1

what if i came to your job, gurn my face off while trying to talk to you about superficial crap and poke you while you try to work

you might get a little pissy too

worry about having a good time with your friends, he's a dj, let him do his job

Respecting them means taking time out to talk to every person who wants to stop and chat? Really? Especially when you realize how many fans that they have.

Their job, why you pay them, is to play music, not socialize with you.

I know better then to bother the DJ when he is working. Neither me, nor the original poster went up to Sasha while he was working. Sure, they have every right to tell us to piss off if we talk to them while they are working.

DJ's who act like they are God's gift need to get their head out of their asses.

Posted by DCgirly on May-22-2008 00:57:

"Later Sasha revealed why hes so reluctant to sign autographs generally.

Im not a diva or an ego monster. I just dont think I should sign autographs unless I feel that I performed to the best of my abilities that night, he said.

Last night if some bloke had asked me for an autograph one hour into my set Id have refused, but because I felt I played well by the end of the night, I thought I was worthy of signing autographs.

And this is the biggest bunch of horse shit I have ever read.

Why do you assume that just because someone doesnt want their picture taken or doesnt feel like socializing they have their head up their asses? The dude is pretty clearly introverted, and doesn't take to being put on a pedestal well. He doesn't want to feel so important and worshiped, imo act accordingly. Lots of DJs are more outgoing and friendly, thats great, Sasha is most often not. I don't see what the problem is. No sense complaining about it.

Their job is to play music, not be fluffy happy crowd pleasers. Get on the fucking dancefloor and have a good time.

I think you need to go to a local DJ set one of these days and figure out what these things are really about.

they're there to play music, not make nicey-nice with the punters

busy schedules and long hours of travel don't leave much time to shake your sweaty hand and take a picture with you

many a time i've had to drive a headliner to the airport directly after the show

planes don't wait for fanboys to get their fix

The last time I felt that a DJ should be worshipped and pose for photographs and sign autographs was when I was "new" to the whole of EDM. I was about to get my photo with Digweed the first time I saw him, but the person in front of me was the last person he did anything for and I was disappointed. I've met Moby, had my photo taken with him and have an autographed poster and event ticket hanging up in my room. Sure, the little doodle he did on the ticket is neat-looking, but neither are as "cool/exciting/nifty" as both his performance that night, my conversation with him after the show, nor him complimenting my anti-RIAA shirt during a Barnes & Noble autograph session. Do you know what I have to show for any of those? Nothing, just my memory of what an awesome experience it was, which in my opinion is more than a ticket or a photo will ever be able to capture.

A photo is just that; a photo. It captures me standing next to someone. "OH SHIT, YOU STOOD NEXT TO SOMEBODY, AWESOME!" I don't care if I did or not. I care about the quality of the set that night, not whether or not I got my copy of Northern Exposure signed. Sure, it'd be cool to have both Sasha and Digweed sign it, but I'm not going to be butt-hurt if they don't want to.

They're not rockstars. There is absolutely nothing that obligates them to sign anything or take a picture with you. Morally, no. Contractually, no. They are obligated to show up and play a set, nothing more or less. If they choose to do more then by all means, feel special. If they don't, then no loss, because the mere fact that you were able to see them and have a good time should be special enough to you.

Also, who says that they have to have some sort of crowd interaction? EDM never used to be about what the DJ looked like. Sure, it's always neat to see a DJ getting into what he's playing, but to feel as though it's a requirement is utter bullshit. The only thing you should be looking for when you see a DJ what's coming out of the speakers. Sasha & Digweed have always been introverted in the booth and out of the booth. It's simply who they are. As long as the DJ can make me dance and/or spin a magnificent set then I'm completely satisfied. Hell, you could put them behind a black curtain for eight hours and it wouldn't make a difference to me.

The fact that people feel that artists are obligated to have their picture taken or sign something is disgusting.

rob hit the nail on the head with his interpretations of my words. I do not think sasha and digweed are talentless hacks, but being a dj is not that hard if you commit to praticing.Anyone on this board could do it just as good if they invested the time into the craft. Would you take a picture with a resident dj if he rocked just as hard? If he played the exact same set as them, and nailed it everyone would say sasha and digweed's was better. Baaaa baaaa sheep. I like dj's but i don't put the pussy on a pedestal.
