How was your interview, RJT? In my case, as soon as I saw the interviewers and listened to my heart, I decided not to go there this year, as I realised I would be making a huge mistake. I was glad to know I took the 2nd best grade in their examination though, losing just to a guy that had to study only English (I was examined in both English and Japanese) but who had studied in the best school of engineering in Brazil.
Anyway, I'm still rooting for you

| Originally posted by Lira Well, maybe I should say I was more like a drug-free Spad talking to the dude in the chair, but, I certainly don't think that is the best approach. I just couldn't be bothered to act in any other way anymore and, as a matter of fact, I almost decided not to apply at all (I handed all the documents in the last minute), but I thought it didn't hurt to at least try and think it about more carefully. When I received a phone call telling me that I had been approved for the interview, I gave it a lot of thought. Do I even want to go any more? What would I do in Japan would take me where I want? I can't be arsed to tell my whole story but... I just realised that wasn't what I wanted for me in that moment. There's little I live for, but no way I'm going to give that up. |

).
You should start a big thread on how rejection has turned you gay and you're gonna go back and live with your parents who wanna disown you.
That leaves Myra and the cat...hmm, we'll think of something for them later.

| Originally posted by RJT Similar ending, bit of a different tale. The cliffs notes version follows... I had my interview on Sunday, it was a group interview and a teaching demonstration, I thought it went very well. At the end, 8 of the 16 there were asked back for a second interview, I was one of them. I had a "personal" interview the next day in which I had to give one 5 minute teaching demonstration that I knew about, and one that was a surprise. I also thought the personal interview went well, and though it was difficult, genuinely felt I had done the best I possibly could have. They told me I would find out within two weeks whether or not I would be offered a position, and I heard back from them yesterday. I was not offered a position, but was encouraged to re-apply (basically "Thanks, but no thanks" ).So now I don't know what my plan is. I applied for four full time jobs in Milwaukee today, none of them are teaching - but I really have no clue what's coming next, if I'm going to apply to other programs in other countries, or what pretty much any of my plans are beyond the next two weeks. I guess either try for some other programs or get a decent full time job in Milwaukee and try to get right back into grad school within a year or so would be preferable. But yeah, I really don't know, and don't know what to think about all of it either. /emoJTrant |

I havent read all the thread so I may be repeating certain elements...
Japan as far as I know is a difficult country to get a working visa for, I was highly considering it, but was told as a UK citizen it is a first come first served basis which you have to apply for at the start of the year, and a maximum of 300 or something equaly is stupid as that are issued.
I decided to go Australia, partly because of the weather, partly because of the girls and mainly because there are many job prospects there!!
I have a couple of people I know who are teaching in China, Its suppose to be ridiculously easy to get a job, It may not be Tokyo, but it will still be a great experience in a different culture.
I would check the forums on LonelyPlanet and RealGap for more advice.
GoodLuck.
Rob

I've had a couple of friends who have done this and loved it. I'm considering going to Europe to teach for many of the same reasons as you are. I've never been able to afford to travel and if I worked overseas, I would be able to not just see other cultures but immerse myself within them.
