Hey

And Phleps. Oh yum!

lol "Americans? We are going to smash them. That's what we came here for." LOL stfu.

That was the best relay race ever. Come from 0.82 seconds behind for the win, vs. the fastest 100M french swimmer, their anchor, who made the statement above. Perfect justice.

Watching Phelps go for the gold is very exciting..

As for Phelps I find him very goofy looking, but those "lines" on his pelvic bone are yummmmy! my fav part on a man!

There are just too many athletes at the olympics....if you are not in the top 10 for the event then you shouldn't even be competing in it....its sad when we send an athlete who finishes 7th out of 8 in a qualifying heat and sets a canadian record doing it....they should never have been there.

I agree with that Statement...

Personally, i don't know how some of the athletes do it.

Going in to Olympics with a goal of being in the top 50 or something along the lines like that wouldn't feel very rewarding.

Yes it's an accomplishment to just be in the olympics, but for training hard for 4 years just to get in the top 50 doesn't seem like it would be something I could do...

Competing in the olympics is a dream for most athletes, how can you say something like that?
you realize not many athletes from around the world make it to the olympics, so OF COURSE IT'S REWARDING to be in the top 50 IN THE WORLD.

it should be rewarding to go to the olympics....and being in the top 50 shouldn't be rewarded....being in the top 10 should.

When tax payer money goes to these athletes then we as tax payers deserve something for our money....and I am sorry but top 50 isn't a reward for my money.

It is obvious that many of our sports programs are miles behind other countries....there is no reason we shouldn't be on the same level as countries like Australia....and don't give me the excuse of our winters....these athletes train all year round and in other countries....so winter is not an obstacle.

When Mark Tewksbury (sp?) still has the canadian record for the 200m backstroke it just shows how pathetic are swimming program is...its been 12 years and we haven't been able to produce one swimmer who can make that swim faster.

When the best fencer we have is a 50 year old lady who just started training a year ago is sad....when the best skeet shooter we have is a 57 year old lady who shakes more then I do without my morning coffee is sad.

Heck...we are bringing back Ian Miller for his 9th olympics so he can disgrace himself and his horse by finishing in the top 50.

None of this make me proud to be canadian...it makes me sad that we this is the best we have to offer the world.

I think they only get paid if they win a medal.

US Olympians gets 25,000 for gold. 15,000 for silver. 10,000 for bronze. Then they get a bunch of endorsements.

They do get paid if they win a medal but we also fund these programs with our tax dollars.

Olympic Fraud? Opening featured lip syncing, faked fireworks
By Cara Anna
Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 08/12/2008 08:23:05 AM CDT

Lin Miaoke, a nine-year-old Chinese girl who performed at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. A 7-year-old Chinese girl's face was "not suitable" for the Olympics opening ceremony, so Lin lip-synched "Ode to the Motherland." (AP Photo/Xinhua, Zhou Liang)BEIJING A 7-year-old Chinese girl was not good-looking enough for the Olympics opening ceremony, so another little girl with a pixie smile lip-synched "Ode to the Motherland," a ceremony official said the latest example of the lengths Beijing took for a perfect start to the Summer Games.

A member of China's Politburo asked for the last-minute change to match one girl's face with another's voice, the ceremony's chief music director, Chen Qigang, said in an interview with Beijing Radio.

"The audience will understand that it's in the national interest," Chen said in a video of the interview posted online Sunday night.

The news follows reports that some footage of the fireworks exploding across China's capital during the ceremony was digitally inserted into television coverage, apparently over concerns that not all of the 29 blasts could be captured on camera.

China has been eager to present a flawless Olympics image to the world, shooing migrant workers and so-called petitioners who come to the central government with grievances from the city and shutting down any sign of protest.

The country's quest for perfection apparently includes its children.

Lin Miaoke's performance Friday night, like the ceremony itself, was an immediate hit. "Nine-year-old Lin Miaoke becomes instant star with patriotic song," the China Daily newspaper headline said today.

But the real voice behind the tiny, pigtailed girl in the red dress who wowed 91,000

spectators at the National Stadium on opening night really belonged to 7-year-old Yang Peiyi. Her looks apparently failed the cuteness test with officials organizing the ceremony, but Chen said her voice was judged the most beautiful.
"The national interest requires that the girl should have good looks and a good grasp of the song and look good on screen," Chen said. "Lin Miaoke was the best in this. And Yang Peiyi's voice was the most outstanding."

During a live rehearsal soon before the ceremony, the Politburo member said Miaoke's voice "must change," Chen said in the radio interview. He didn't name the official.

So Peiyi's voice was matched with Miaoke's face.

"We had to make that choice. It was fair both for Lin Miaoke and Yang Peiyi," Chen told Beijing Radio. "We combined the perfect voice and the perfect performance."

Chen couldn't be reached for comment today.

A photo of Peiyi posted today on popular Web site Sina.com shows a smiling girl with bangs and crooked teeth. A China News Service story posted with the photo says a China Central Television reporter asked Peiyi whether she felt regret over the opening ceremony.

Peiyi responded that just having her voice used for the opening ceremony was an honor.

Whether the move was unethical, or unfair to both girls, has become a hot topic among Chinese and is racing across the country's blogosphere.

"The organizers really messed up on this one," said Luo Shaoyang, 34, a retail worker in Beijing.

"This is like a voice-over for a cartoon character," Luo said. "Why couldn't they pick a kid who is both cute and a good singer? This damages the reputation of both kids for their future, especially the one lip-synching. Now everyone knows she's a fraud. Who cares if she's cute?"

Zhang Xinyi, 22, who works in marketing in Beijing, disagreed.

"I can understand why they picked the prettier girl. They need to maintain a certain aesthetic beauty during the opening ceremonies. This situation is not so bad, especially since it gives two people an opportunity to shine rather than just one."

Peiyi is a first-grader at the Primary School affiliated to Peking University. Her tutor, Wang Liping, wrote in her blog that Peiyi is both cute and well-behaved, with a love for Peking opera.

"She doesn't like to show off. She's easygoing," Wang wrote. She and other school officials couldn't be reached today.

Miaoke, however, was a minor celebrity even before the opening ceremony. The third-grader appeared in a television ad last year with China's biggest gold medal hope, hurdling champion Liu Xiang, and she was in an Olympics ad just before Chinese New Year, China Daily reported.

Miaoke has her own blog, and one of the latest photos posted since the ceremony shows her looking up nervously at the ceremony's director, film director Zhang Yimou. "Giving the child encouragement," the caption says.

Her father, Lin Hui, told China Daily he learned Miaoke would be "singing" only 15 minutes before the opening ceremony began. The newspaper wrote Lin "still cannot believe his daughter has become an international singing sensation."

It was the second straight Olympics where the opening ceremony involved lip-synching.

Luciano Pavarotti's performance at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin was prerecorded. The maestro who conducted the aria, Leone Magiera, said earlier this year that the bitter cold made a live performance impossible for Pavarotti, who was in severe pain months before his cancer diagnosis. Pavarotti died in September 2007 at age 71.

haha we have a lot in common! +1 to the whole damn post!

Phelps lines:

Chinese Gymnasts: For ONCE I was cheering for a country other than my own. It was so nice to see them win (and of course to see the US underdogs pull shit outta their ass for the bronze....impressive!) IMO I wish the US had more difficulty in their routines, because the japanese were f*ckin up all day and still got the silver over the US who stuck 95% of their routines. booo to start values!! lol

Kellys must think alike!

I couldn't believe the Japanese got silver after all those f*ckups! Just because the Japanese threw in a bunch of fancy tricks that they fucked up on they got higher than the US. Our boys still did good though

Although they serve their purpose sometimes those start values call for some unfair wins. What do you people think? Should they have everyone at the same skill level for the gymnastics competition vs this start value business?

Day 4 and still no medals. Not that I'm watching much of it, but Canadian athletes are stinking it up once again in the Summer Games! haha wow our summer olympians suck compared to the rest of the world.

Funding (or lack thereof) is a big problem, but not the only reason. I actually prefer the Winter Games personally.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Aug-12-2008 21:22:

fucking TOGO has a medal!

KYRGYZSTAN has a medal!

Azerbaijan has THREE medals!

Canada has none! For those who care, it must be more than a bit embarrassing I'd imagine.

If they want more funding they better not look to the government to hand out more money.

Personally, I say forget having any government funding and give me some of my tax dollars back....if they want funding look to the private sector to get it....heck we can make the Olympics one big advertisement and have Team Home Depot, Team Visa, Team Coca Cola, etc compete against each other for medals.
