Your comparison to the $50 cab ride is a red herring. We are not comparing buses or subways to taxis. We are comparing buses or subways at the normal fare to buses or subways at a reduced (free) fare. I've never met anyone who would risk life and limb for $2.50 in any state of mind. I don't know anyone who would risk it to save $50 either. The only reason a person would put themselves at such a risk is a poor assessment of the risk itself - which alcohol tends to give people.

lol. True, I'm aware of that. Just wanted to show that all after hour parties/clubs go past the service time of the TTC, and since we were talking about Charles and Liberty, I thought I would keep it in relation to that.

My point was that the sponsorship allows the subway to be open later - not that it is free. I agree that the $2.50 is irrelevant, but the sponsorship allows the TTC to stay open later when there is less traffic even on NYE without operating at a loss. The fact that it is OPEN, not that it is FREE, is what is being argued would potentially deter drinking and driving (at least in my argument, anyways).

I haven't read all 5 pages of bickering here, lol...but has anyone made mention of the AWARENESS factor this move generates?

aside from the obvious convenience of the TTC running later and the nice gesture of it being free...that the issue of DUI is in the news (and has fostered a 5 page discussion here) is also a good thing.
