| Originally posted by R!CH nor do i fault you for taking this opportunity to cozy up to the hand that cuts your check, but the fact remains that circus has trouble attracting a broad range of a-list djs on a regular basis like its competitors. you can't really pin that fact on anything other than its unwillingness to update the venue to its competitors' standards. |
Your statement regarding the update on the venue is fair enough. As a DJ, I take into account the decor and venue to some degree, but I am much more in it for the music and the people's reaction to the music and how everyone is enjoying themselves. Thus, it probably doesn't bother me as much as some people and I appreciate the uniqueness of the venue in relation to other venues.

i may not have been to circus in years, but even from the standpoint of its physical layout--which i assume is the same--the main room dj booth provides no sense of safety or privacy from a mob attack. i forget who it was, but i remember reading a review of some night there where it took the headliner 15 minutes to get from the booth to the exit after the show because of overzealous fans closing in from every direction. that would be quite annoying to me as a touring dj seeing how orderly and professional exit strategies are at other clubs and festivals. how can circus seriously expect to attract the 'dj mag' titans without a more comfortable dj booth? or one where the dj can gather his traveling entourage within? the answer is they can't because the working space is important to big djs who command big audiences. now as a patron i like how low the booth sits to the ground, but as a dj that degree of intimacy with the faces that populate the front row does nothing to inspire a memorable set. other hollywood megaclubs understand the virtue of having an elevated booth. and with all the square-footage they're working with, why keep the booth in that awkward corner? every large and successful club i can think of fills in from the back, and for a good reason. and how about arranging the main room with some sense of symmetry of space? i guarantee you that would solve much of the acoustic problems in that club. these are just my 2 cents, but my experience with mismanaged clubs is that the powers that be are unwilling to admit to any problems so the venue will continue to suffer that second-rate image until ownership changes hands.

well that's certainly an improvement, even though i can't really tell where it's situated in the club.
One of the best thing about Circus was the DJ booth. Everyone I know loved the old location.

Before January 2009, you might be able to say the club was lacking. But since January 2009, the club has been packed most weekends and the music, talent, people, and atmosphere has been incredible. Did anyone see the lighting that was brought in for Rank 1? Were you there when Matt Darey played? Have you been there when Joseph Mordeno and I have packed the back room until 4am? It has been a great time since January and I am not just saying that because I play there. I know a lot of people that appreciate Circus and have the time of their lives there. |

I've felt that energy and buzz at Circus a few times this past year and that is what I live for. There have been some really good vibes and excitement about the music, people, and DJs at Circus these past 5 months. Love is in the air.
Here's the problemn.
Everyone thinks that by moving where th DJ booth is and adding more lights resolves the issue the DJs/agencies/promoters have with the venue.
It honestly reminds me of the same issueds DJs/agencies/promoteres/ have/had of another venue(s) when it comes to if tey want their top tier talent there...
It's more than that. You can add lights and move the DJ around, but to those who get around and to the DJs themselves, it's (as it
s been directly described to me) PATCHWORK and while temporarely a cool thing, it doesn't take long to realize that it's nothing more than that.
The change all these DJs/agencies/etc want is the PRESENCE that club has and the impact it could have on that DJ and its potential following...
And as far as whtehr the place has been booked, I have been in LA pretty much since mid-February and the city lately seems to be really lacking osome great trance nights other than the up-and-comers Circus is bringin gint....so it's just a good time for Circus to get crowds .... but Cali tends to do really well iwth trance acts near the end of Ibiza season and during the fall/early winter.....let's see if it can continue the crowds then. I hope it does. Seriously. I love Cirucs on its good nights....
***NOTE: Again, this post is of my own accord...and again, Circus has the most potential of any club in LA with the right makeover. BY FAR. But patchwork isn't going to cut it.***
Let's move on!!!
So what DJ's would You LUV to SEE & HEAR play @ CIRCUS?

He's not bitter. Fact is, what's been done is patchwrok and not change for the better. And you don't have to be there in persno tosee that (note: I have been there in person and see it's patchwork done.).
While some peeps see the patchwork as grand changes done with place, wstep back and it's the sajme places with bandages put on. I hope it's becomes more than that in the future, though. Look at the dump Vanguard was before its makeover.

| Originally posted by R!CH from the audience's point of view yes, it was great to have a dj that close. as i have stated. but for a dj who just flew in from brazil or romania going from seeing beautiful women who look alive and sentient to disgusting washers sweating with their eyes rolled back swaying around like undead creatures of the night, doesn't really inspire sets that stand apart from the rest of their touring schedule. if you're there for the music, it's better that the dj isn't forced to look at that ugliness as if it's sitting across the dinner table from him. only then, from afar, can he or she possibly appreciate the energy of the crowd. it's the same for circus, avalon and vanguard. |
Well this thread isn't about changes or patchwork or whatever... It's just a thread asking about DJ's that you and whoever else THAT DOES go to CIRCUS would like to see play there. That's all.
