Yeah, and you've got most of it wrong. In the eleven years you've been watching Chelsea, I don't think they've finished outside the Top 10 of the top league of English football once. And that's just the very top of a huge pyramid that runs to hundreds of teams and dozens of leagues.

Now forgive me for being cynical about foreign fans of "English soccer" when none of them ever seem to support a team that isn't in the Champion's League positions or know anything about English football outside of the little sphere their teams dwell in. Even eleven years ago Chelsea were FA Cup holders and playing in Europe. Twenty years ago Liverpool were league champions.

where you there today M8?

what a crackin' game.

i'm a bara fan, but since it was only on, on three screens (and since there was no way we were going to lose) i watched the liverpool game instead. tough luck. i'm spanish, so we tend to support Liverpool since they have more of our players in their team, and i generally prefer them over any other british team.
it will be easier to watch a Chelsea vs Bara game, i won't be as divided. Barcelona is going to own Chelsea.

can't wait for the next game at Nevadasmith's
hopefully i'm off again.

Find me a brit who supports the minnesota timberwolves or a baseball team that doesnt call itself the yankees or red sox and wel talk

If you not local , ur not going to support a smaller team. Only the big clubs get media coverage outside of Europe so how are people even to know for example who west brom is when they havent seen them play unless they are playing a big club who usually gives them a pasting.

Find me a Brit who gives a shit about American sports and your analogy might be more apt. Few people are in the habit of pretending they're part of a sporting culture they know almost nothing about.

http://www.baseballfan.co.uk/

then you got those fans who showed up to Wembley to watch the NFL games

just to name two

obviously the supporters of American sports in England are not in big numbers, but they do exist

Posted by elFreak on Apr-15-2009 02:54:

the nhl pre season games in england sold out in about an hour

ian tries to like hockey, but picked the team with the best player. I will give him credit for following it in a place it is not easy to.

black people from any country like basketball

As I've already said: "we" is a self-inclusive pronoun. Including yourself = attempting to be part of. English clubs = part of English football culture.

Hence why I said "few people" rather than "nobody". You're talking fractions of percentages of the population who follow American sports. Brazil played Italy at Wembley recently and not much of that crowd were English.

no, it isn't. not even close.

Posted by elFreak on Apr-15-2009 03:08:

to be fair, how much of england is "real" english anymore

Yes it fucking is. When someone says "We deserved to win" or similar in a footballing context they're not saying "Me and fellow members of the foreign fanbase" they're saying "the team". Case in point:

"I just hope we can hold them off."

He's quite obviously not referring to himself or any supporters because none of the supporters nor him are actually playing Liverpool. It would be semantic gibberish if the "we" is supposed to include the supporters. It's not even as if, by sitting there watching his TV/Internet stream in the US, he's taking part in an indirect way in Chelsea "holding off" Liverpool.

By saying "we" he is including the team, the manager, the coaching staff and all the supporters there actually audibly motivating the players in a bracket with himself. Now, literally speaking, he's having fuck-all effect on the game. He isn't actually part of what's happening at Stamford Bridge. That's why he's attempting to include himself. By becoming part of some spacially transcendental totality with the club he's trying to include himself in the club.

Now at this point you've got one of two options. Either that includes the culture surrounding the club that gives it identity as much as any players on the pitch, in which case he's deluded, or his "support" of the club doesn't extend beyond what he's seeing on screen. In the former case: I win. In the latter case, he's fucking plastic! He's not "as much of a fan" as people who are actually part of the club on a less superficial level.

i'm sorry, i'll use "the team that i root for, [blank]" instead of we, to placate someone a few thousand miles away. for ALL teams i root for.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Apr-15-2009 04:34:

all i have to say is that i hope WE manage to beat united to the title, despite OUR recent losses to chelsea in the CL. i hope MY faith in MY team isn't misplaced and WE'LL be able to hold the cup aloft after the 38th game.
