If I remember right, palm used to have some gear but sold it and is happier using Reason alone. The expense of the studio doesn't say much about the quality of the music.

ive had all that gear, i couldnt make anything with it, it was too much fucking around with midi-delay, preset-saving and re-opening, backing up projects in daw i didnt knew, it was just too much around it, and it almost killed my musical drift. so i sold everything and restarted with a laptop only and now i get results again after two years of nothing. learning logic atm and its internal instruments. might look into VST in a few years but not before i know Logic and its own instrumenst 100%. ive learned that less is more, it truly is, i have alot of respect from artists who manage to be creative with all that hardware, they must have HUGE brains! (im not talking about anyone here, relax).

Yea me too. I used to have a load of hardware but now I think my sound is better with just one hardware synth and the rest VST's.

I must be thick because I can't cope with loads of sample banks and tons of new toys either - my mind does'nt work so well with too many options to trawl. I now go out of my way not to upgrade, not to update and not to add yet another 1000 free kicks off a future music mag or whatever.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Reading through these recent posts a lightbulb went on in my head and I see now what part of the problem is - it seems that most people here only see hardware instruments as tools for recording and fail to see that many people like to just play. One of the main reasons I've always liked hardware is simply for the immediacy of powering it up, turning knobs, and playing, without having to turn on a computer, use a mouse to find/create sounds, etc. If you've seen my studio photos, you'd notice that, aside from a few key pieces, my hardware isn't even positioned in front of my computer - that's by design because I usually practice my piano playing, work on song ideas, play around with sounds, etc. with my hardware, not my computer. This may not be true for everybody, but I can get very inspired by having actual instruments in front of me, whereas I find making music with a mouse/computer to be a total inspiration killer.

lol yeah my mind must be full too, i deleted all my samples and only use included samples now lol. their just as good though so why not, and it makes everything so easy to backup and collab and everything. i love the feeling of simplicity. dear god am i becoming a minimalist?

Read the first few pages...and this is a keeper. Dead_mMoose alt should post a bit more often. Not because I agree with everything he says, but because I like the way he says it, seems somewhat intelligent. Forum rhetoric boner?

But i'm guessing this one has come to a close already =/

surprised that noone picked up on a little mistake the OP put up... regarding ferry corstens studio in 99. less hardware?? 1/3 of the cost?? i would think a similar set up if not more hardware kit than most of the people on here... and i guarantee it cost a lot more to buy then than it does now. just a thought one reason why i didnt own any decent kit was cos of the price!

gotta agree with cryo though. having big keyboards in front of you feels a lot more fun. its an actual instrument! you can tweek and play to your hearts content. i dont find i can do that with vsts... probably a mental thing, as i can play about with my JP8000 for hours and hours.

I agree about the "fun" aspect of hardware.

Sometimes when I don't feel like loading up a sequencer or anything I like to take the Moog out into the living room and just plug it in with some headphones and tweak away. Other times I'll load up Audacity (simple audio recorder) and have a "jam" session where I cycle through all kinds of noises for ten to twenty minutes and then export it as a WAV for later use.

I don't know.

Pretty much any somewhat famous producer gets crapped on when they post on TA.

"people" don't - there's a very small, but incredibly vocal, group of people (most who don't have anything to do with production) who decied they were going after him.

Basically it was jealously and they didn't like how fast he rose up the ranks and started getting major gigs in the space of what was percived to be about a year.

Combine that with the fact he really didn't watch what he said sometimes (which you have to whether you like it or not when you're in the public eye), did a couple of dumb interviews that a journalist made the most of and the started dating a porn star.....

....well you get the idea - that little group of DJ's just took aim.

He's a good bloke and I know a few people that know him and have worked with him and they only have good things to say about him. I've spoken to him on here and again he always was forthcoming about giving useful information - he even posted samples of the tracks that went big.

Simply put, a few bitter TA's ruined it for everyone else. He does post, but very seldom and I understand why.

"ruined" is past tense.
