No restaurant will give separate bills to 20+ people. Some will do groups of 4 or 5, but not a tiny place like C&D when everybody is moving around. I don't really fault them for that. I fault them for their generally lousy service, impossible-to-read bill, non-voiding of canceled items, and blatant scamming (i.e. calculating service charge on the after-tax amount).

Even still, a few more things had to happen to be more than $100 short. Some people forgot the tax and/or service charge, and at least one person either stiffed completely or didn't pay for something expensive (like a pitcher).

The more people you have in total, and the more spread-out the times that people leave, the worse it seems to get at the end of the night. Sushi night worked out really well because it was a small group (~10 people?) and most of us left at the same time.

Assuming you can't control the group size and you're stuck with one big bill, the best strategy is usually to have anyone leaving early settle with the cashier and bring back the receipt. Absolutely NO dropping cash on the table and taking off, no matter how generous it seems. It's not just to help find out if somebody stiffed - it also tells you if the restaurant is ripping you off (i.e. if there are several unexplained items on the bill).

So yeah, I know it's not up to me but I say next time should be any or all of:
- New venue
- Physically separate tables, if not separate bills
- Everybody gets a receipt before leaving.

Well, I took one of them - but only because I had ordered the same flavour and they never brought the duplicate. I ordered 2 pounds, claimed the first mystery pound, and they only brought the 2nd one later.

But I do remember that they got the order for the 2nd flavour wrong the first time and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they "forgot" to void the first one that came.

umm. if a giant club can do separate billing while running a tab so can some restaurant. if they wanna get paid and get a proper tip, they will do separate bills.

no i agree we didn't even have that many people
woah 10 people at the same table, big deal, do you really have to bring 4-5 different plates of stuff we didn't order? lol
next time we should just go somewhere else.. (and have separate bills)
i left a 15 buck tip for 3 of us and i did confirm with the waitress if the wings were half price.. someone must have stiffed..

Posted by StereoPrincess on Dec-02-2009 23:51:

whoa. sounds like a mess.

Yeah exactly. The service was a mess, they probably added some of the stuff orders that came but nobody took or someone stiffed. I tried to order wings 2x, no luck until after when my beer came (even then getting 2nd or 3rd beer was tough, damnz)

New place, we could do seperate bills but in smaller groups, easier that way obviously.

You guys are fighting too much... I don't like it....

I'm to far away for these TOTA food nights... but you should just implement a new procedure...

Whomever starts the roll call, treats everyone else...

Simple!

lol @ all non-attendees commenting

anyhow, no biggie - I'll def do this at a different place next time, so everyone quit worrying!
A round of wings or a beer or 2 for myself and Aaron would be great though!

otherwise feel free to take me out for a drink, lol (kidding)

see ya all next time - I'm guessing mid-January would be good, once the holiday rush is over

That's different though, because the club doesn't actually have to provide service, just dispense drinks (and no food). There's no concept of a "table" in the first place - the order is being given right where the computer or register is. I don't think it's a fair comparison.

It's a common if not ubiquitous policy at restaurants; once you hit 10 or 12 people it's all one bill and the service charge is applied automatically. It's to protect themselves. This doesn't excuse any of the other BS; I only stop to point it out because complaining about a minor issue is counterproductive when there are major issues to be concerned with.

3 pounds wings - AJ - 15. wityh tax about $18

Total: about $52
Bobby and I put in together $60.
$8 tip is about 16%

Let me know if I miscalculated, and I'll be happy to buy a round for all who put in extra to cover the short.

I forgot to leave money for that extra pint of Rickards, but looks like AJ covered me, thanks!

Unfortunately that pint of Rickards I calculated was mine after we shared our pitcher
