so, what exactly would you consider medication for then, if not to treat such ailments? what was the point of developing medicines if we're not supposed to use them?

Well yeah, but at the same point there is a huge overprescription of things to people which imo makes things worse. Rather than dealing with the cause of issues, gps are happy to just hand out pills like sweets to people.

who gives a shit? we let people engage in activities every day that cause themselves harm. why should medication be special?

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-15-2010 15:38:

To be fair, prescription medication addiction is more prevalent than ever, we just do not hear about it as much because they are legal and taxable.

im just not one to care more about prescription addiction than i am any other addiction, especially when compared to cigs and alcohol. nobody ever got bashed because someone loved their panadol too much.

Because medication doesn't always treat the real root cause of people's problems, like poor coping skills, low socio-economic status, lack of social supports, etc. - all things that contribute to mood disorders.

Giving someone pills who hasn't got all areas of their life in check is like putting a band-aid on severed finger.

i dunno, maybe im just a cvnt but i simply dont care on a generic, wide-spread level. if someone has so many issues anyway, then meds are just gonna contribute to their shitty life. unlucky.

the obvious exception for me is children, now that shit needs paying attention to.

That's pretty much what I just said, lol.

no addiction is more important than another because they are all the same thing: dependence to things that cause ill effects to health when abused.

Who cares about people getting bashed, (which they do, sports stars, actors and so on.) when the reality is that there is a sizable portion of the population addicted to medications they do not need? Peoples lives do get ruined because of this, not to mention the negative impact it has on the loved ones of these people.

Oxycontin for instance...

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-15-2010 15:58:

and yes it is always up to the person to make the right choices, and while many people obtain these drugs illegally, many get them from doctors who know that they have no real need for them.

That is where the problem lies imo.

I consider medication a last resort for children, the elderly and people unable to overcome their ailments without them. Twisted ankles heal, headaches subside, common colds are fought off. You don't need meds to fix these pathetic little problems. The more you use them, the more reliant you become on them, and I don't necessarily mean addiction but simply an inability to cope or fight off anything without popping pills.

but if i have constant access to pills why do i need to care if i can cope without them or not? as someone who suffers regular headaches, why do i want to "get my man on" and tolerate them, if i can take some panadol and then go about my day, being productive and pain-free?

The odds are you'll almost always have "constant access" to pills, and it won't matter, although in a few generations nobody will have immune systems or pain thresholds and they might just come to miss them. So go ahead: neck them and get on with it.

I don't like going on about the demise of society because I generally think that it's a load of idealised bollocks, but for me one of the biggest problems with people today is how soft we all are. We grow up without ever encountering any kind of hardship and we chemically remove any slight pain or discomfort, go to therapy for any emotional tremor, health-and-safety away the slightest potential risk or worry.

I'm not saying passing on the painkillers makes me John Rambo, but after a while you become dependent on your chemical crutches, and if you can't get through a common cold or a bout of insomnia without reaching for the drugs, what do you reach for when a serious obstacle comes up?

Posted by Schadenfreude on Jan-16-2010 02:16:

pussy, beer and green popsicles.

Are you getting enough beaver Jay? First thing I shout to the mrs when I come through the door after a hard days work is "growler out, growler out!"

Tends to keep me on the straight and narrow, so to speak.

Moral has spoken in more ways than one.

Sorry buddy but listen to the Haz man, he is totally right.

Go OUTSIDE it won't kill you, ffs! Yet smoking inside COULD kill your child. I have a baby and I smoke on occasion, I'd never want to harm her...shit I'd quit before I consider not taking my lazy ass outside to smoke

This also.

I know people who take spare antibiotics they have lying around the house whenever they get a cold. It's idiots like them who contibute to the rise of things like Golden Staph. It's funny, I'm happy to pour all kinds of shit into my body at clubs, but I'm staunchly anti-drugs at home. When I got my tonsils and wisdom teeth out I basically did it drug-free when I had prescriptions for all kinds of shit. The nurses kept freaking out and trying to get me to take painkillers.

The only thing I found lacking in them was the sound and feel of the cigarette paper burning. I had no idea it was such a huge contributing factor to why I liked cigarettes.

You won't feel that your craving is 100% satisfied, but it definitely helps. You'll be chewing a lot of gum if this is the route you take.

All that aside, I had no idea you were such a selfish prick ignorant to the damage that second-hand smoke causes. Seriously. Man the fuck up. Slip your coat on, light up, have your cig, and go back inside.
And stop being such an asshole to your wife.

Do you want your baby to be born with deformed organs and respiratory problems because you are too much of a pussy to stand outside in the cold, satisfying your addiction?
Think about it.

I've know three women in the past 2 years have kids whilst smoking, one of them had a miscarriage too and then got pregnant again and still smoked. Fucking grotesque.

I worked with a woman who chain smoked throughout her pregnancy as well. It's kind of sad seeing people manifest so little control over their own thoughts and behavior, especially when a child is involved.

I'd get rid of the cigs for the sake of my kid. There are way WAY harder habits to kick than cigs. I don't understand why cigs would outweigh your newborn. Nicotine just isn't that serious

Posted by euphoria on Jan-18-2010 21:08:

Are you going to try to quit at any point? If so I beleive there are anti-anxiety meds that also help you quit smoking.

If you are really set on smoking in the house will you at least consider installing some type of home ventilation system. The second hand smoke will travel throughout the house even if you just limit it to one room.

Or may be one of those air purifiers that filter the smoke out of the air.

I finally tried one of these e-cigarettes over the weekend by the way. I must say it wasn't bad and for some reason it was even stronger than the regular cigarette I had been smoking just prior to trying it.

Posted by Protege on Jan-18-2010 22:37:

Smoke more and die. Kid will be better off.
