Ah, but that's the catch 22! If all this security does its job, the pubic will NEVER know about any attempt of violence/terrorism. Such attempts are not publicly disclosed.

I don't think any of us backseat drivers can fully appreciate the security issues with the summit. I don't agree with the summit itself, but if it's going to happen, we damn well better be prepared.

I was thinking that at first, but really, there is a reason security is this high. It's not only 20 political leaders, but in town are also some of the world's top business leaders and other relevant participants. The protest school/people's summit does not discourage violance... kinda sends an obvious meaning that there will be blood.

I predict they will be quick in blaming agents provocateurs for the shit disturbing they are going to do. The cops got busted for doing this in Quebec, so they may make up their own and blame the cops... the perfect scapegoat scenario.

Protest organizers admit that there will be anarchists there too, but will do nothing to discourage them.

the fences creep me out. The heavy police presence down there is even creepier. Even early last week - I was surprised by the amount of police walking around, driving around, and hanging out in groups just watching people. I've never felt uncomfortable around police - but over the past week I've seriously felt as if I was being watched closely while walking by.

I hope things stay in-control. If anything does happen - I can't imagine a Torontonian causing major problems. We love our city far too much.

I'm staying out of the downtown core till it's over.

The thing about this is, if nothing "happens" people will just say the security and the cost were excessive. But if we had sloppy security something would probably go down and the Canadian government would come under huge fire for it.

Really? I just see them hanging out in massive groups, talking, and not paying attention to anybody at all.

really... based on my experiences last week - and I don't believe myself to have issues with paranoia . Cops were indeed watching me and everyone around. For sure there are groups just hanging out but I saw many police cars and vans driving around slowly - saw many police just standing and staring. I wanted to take some pictures of the fences but every time I pulled out my phone to snap a shot - a cop would give me a look and I just felt to weird to take it.

Ya - I agree to a point - unfortunately the protests won't do much and I sure would like to see the Conservatives ousted....

But who knows what will happen (or what could happen without the security measures). We'll probably never know for sure if it was truly a ridiculous waste of money as much as most of us suspect that it is.

you don't think you're paranoid, but you feel awkward around cops?

cops are suppose to watch people. that's their job in this security thing. if you aren't doing anything wrong, why should it bother you that cops are watching you?

taking pics... not a good idea at any of these security things as someone might mistaken you for shit disturber getting intelligence to plan an attack or something

You can't deny even if they are doing their jobs, it's a bit unnerving to see so much police presence when you're not used to it (and who is). In my 10 min walk down wellington this morning I must have seen at least 30 cops, more once you get closer to Bay St. I found myself walking in the middle of a group of four of them and felt pretty important, like I had a hot police escort group for me to get safely to work

I'm so relieved to be leaving Toronto tonight til Sunday. It's only going to get more intense as the week goes on.

Anyways...I'm kinda glad I'm missing this whole thing. I only get back to Canada on July 7th and this'll be long over by then. Praying nothing bad happens though.
