i say we release markov from contract next year along with hamrlik
that clears up like 10million dollrs of cap space... enough for 2 new, young, powerful big Ds
or a top 6 forward and 2 secon line d men

The Kings will never let Doughty go. He's their franchise player!
you can forget about doughty.
even if the kings do not sign him, he will command way too much. We already have a player of his type with Subban anyway.
I would still re sign Markov. His price tag just went down, and he will probably finish his career in montreal.
It is nice to go after all of these young superstars, but it is really not feasible with the salary cap. We have some room money wise after this year, but not enough to go after doughty. Even with Hammer's contract off of the books, Josh Georges will eat up some of that money...probably get at least 3.5 mill/year.
Gill might be back, we will see how he does come playoff time...he would have to take a pay cut but i think he likes it here.
The way Kostitsyn is playing, he is going to get a raise...even if he had a bad year last year...he is what you call a poor man's ovechkin. (hard north south game, with laser shot and a nose for the net...physical presence when needed.) Obviously he is far from being ovie, but in the new nhl it would be hard to replace that. He is an RFA, but an arbitrator would certainly rule in his favour if he keeps it up.
The habs will most likely swap some bottom 6 guys around again...that is it. This team is not about big acquisitions, but based on a strong team game, good forechecking, and a defense that keeps shots limited to the perimeter. Lots of speed, production spread around all 4 lines, transition offense. They are sort of a New Jersey Devils hybrid from a few years back, but with a little more flair.
Jacques Martin is a good coach that never won anything, but now he finally has a good team up front and that goalie he never had in Ottawa.
The free agent market is a waste of time. You overpay for a player every time, the deals are always very long term for high caliber players (cough hack cough scottgomez cough), and there are 0 guarantees. If you look at how the free agent market worked last summer, you will see that gm's are smartening up and becoming cap wise. You build a great team by developing what you have, not by running after what others possess.
We have a strong core group of guys that have bought into the system, we have some decent talent coming up through the pipes, and so far it is working extremely well for us. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
The only time i think it is wise to make a big move is if you are certain that you have a good chance at the cup. Cups are hard to come by in a 30 team league...and it is still a big risk. Sometimes you have to take the big one to find out, but it is still to early to see anything before at least january to get a scope on who is buying, who is selling and what not. The problem with this is that rent a players rarely pay off...so if you have to give too much....eeeesh. Hello Iylia! Perfect example on hos to ruin a once well run franchise.
keep everything as is, and let us see where we can go without going all brian burke and destroying some of the future.
If marky is gone all year, don't be surprised to see Bergeron get picked up once he is healed from his injury. An awful d man for sure, but our pp would benefit.
Let's also see how healthy we stay before doing anything imo.

ps. rumour has it that parize wants out of jersey....would love to see him as a hab, but it is doubtful we could afford him unless we got rid of stump gomez....which will never happen....even his own mother would not trade for him and his salary.
also: doughty is an RFA...would you really want to give up 5 draft picks fr him? he is going to get over 5 easily...possibly even up to 6.5.
It makes no sense for this team...not with a Subban at least.
it's pretty wide open again this year in the east, maybe some in the West too. Hawks aren't as decent as last year so you won't see much dramatic tinkering from the teams with legit shot.
I knew Doughty was an RFA, that makes all the diff in the world. They will probably give him a long term offer, plenty of reasons for both sides to be interested.
Jersey will turn it around it ..... if Lou decides to coach again 
Kovalchuk killed the devils. This kind of player with this kind of team makes 0 sense. A "me" player on a "team before individual" team just does not make sense, and Lou is smarter than that.
My guess is that the owners went up to him and said, "get us a star, no matter what the cost, we need more asses in the seats and need to be a less boring team."
lou had no choice and by doing what he did, crippled the organization for years to come. Parize wants out, salary cap problems galore, and marty boy is going to retire eventually.
if you thought that the devils were a boring team to watch, just wait until the next few years....did you see the total cost of getting kovy? No organization can recover from that...absolutely none.

Lou wanted a quick fix to fill his new arena. Funny thing is I've seen that team have bad starts before and always somehow find a way to make the playoffs, but yeah, they really look inferior this year compared to others.
if you saw some of the weak goals brodeur let in last night....that is the reason.
great goalie, but too old to carry a team single handed anymore.
haven't been a fan of his play for a few years now, and I wasn't surprised when he got yanked during the Olympics
Brodeur and Luongo are very overrated, imo.

it would not surprise me....although something else could happen.
if the habs place markov on long term IR (which they have not done yet)...only half of his salary counts towards the cap and we would have just over 5 million and change freed up.
i still think bill guerin on this team at the league minimum is something to look at.

throw him on the 3rd and 4th line and sit him 1 out of every 3 to 4 games...come playoff time it would pay off...if not with his play, with his heart and his experience.
This team is not that far from being a contender if they stay healthy and keep playing this way. I haven't seen a habs team play this well together both ways in a long long time.
Not as exciting as the team that won the conference 2 years ago...but a way better team even if they will not win the conference this year. This is team built for the playoffs.

I can sort of see where Richards is coming from based on the play last night where Andrei K and Richards started jousting and were about to go at it when out of nowhere PK shows up and takes on Richards himself as the 3rd man in. Now I realize it's cool to stand up for your teammates and all, but in this particular situation PK could have left AK deal with Richards on his own. We ended up with 2 guys in the box after that, stupid move.
Besides that, I'm all for PK and his cockiness.

MONTREAL � Most of us who have been around a while know how history tells us this goes.
In the beginning, P.K. Subban will be chided for his flamboyant style.
Many will hate how he brings so much confidence to his game that it comes off as disrespect.
Don Cherry will suggest that he is going to get his head smacked in if he is not careful, basically creating the environment that he predicts.
Some player in his first year will try to bring PK down a peg.
Soon he will be a marked man in this league.
Subban's teammates will go from city to city defending him for doing what he has quite naturally and talentedly done since he first laced on his skates.
Subban will just go on being Subban.
Mike Richards will be one of many to come down on PK for a lack of modesty in his play.
Veterans don't like a player doing spin-a-ramas around them making them look foolish in the chase.
They don't like his desire to lay down hits at center ice and laying down hip checks.
They basically want the unwritten code to be followed.
Rookies will be asked to be quiet and sit in the corner.
Perhaps it is all a mind game that Philly is playing, where if they can stop PK from doing what he does best, then they can weaken the player and weaken the Habs.
People hated the Great One for the same reasons they hate PK
I happen to have been lucky enough to be working in Edmonton when Wayne Gretzky started in the NHL.
He was hated by just about everyone for exactly the same things.
They said Gretzky's a whiner. He has no respect for anyone. They headhunted him.
They said he was trying to embarrass them with his fancy moves.
Gretzky sloughed it off and said that he wouldn't change his game, but truth is Gretzky did watch his on-ice yapping, even though he was the captain of the team.
When he complained to the ref, in some measure it was his job.
Then years passed and the jealousy that he was the great one dissipated.
In fact, it went full circle.
It was not three years later, Gretzky became a great ambassador for the game, a saviour for a dying league.
That's how it goes and that has been how it has always gone in the NHL and in sports overall.
I am not saying Subban is in the same talent class as Gretzky, only that any young player who stands out as talented, confident -- cocky even -- talks some on the ice, has some fancy moves, is going to get this criticism levelled at him.
And just like Gretzky, here is a prediction of what they will be saying three years from now: that Subban is a great ambassador for the game; that his moves thrill the fans and put bums in seats; that being black helps too as perhaps African-Americans will not think of hockey outside of their sport choices growing up.
PK will do commercials just like Gretzky as a marquee face in the league.
Throw other talented players into this theory and the results are the same: Crosby, Lemieux, among others who got the "Shut up kid" treatment.
And the lack of respect they feel Subban has for them now, just like Gretzky before him, will be an embarrassment to the likes of Mike Richards as time reveals truth.
Three years from now it will be Richards who has to defend his character as bitter and jealous, and Subban will be defending Richards because that is the character of Subban.
They will play on Team Canada together and Richards will want to do a rewind on last night.
It is Richards who in truth should want to take back some moments in his career like the David Booth hit that set Booth's career back and as a necessary hit against a defenceless player had no respect in it whatsoever.
This is how the future will play out for Subban and Richards. How do I know? Just look to the past.
