actually none of those videos were too impressive...just him getting Whacked in the booth. Some of the tunes were decent...some were not.

The only good video is that cocoon closing party and that is based soley on the crowd response.

After speaking with more people from that night...i don't think I'd go see Ricardo if he came again...what a waste.

i've found that there are plenty of times i'm at a club when people are barely moving, including myself, but i'm loving it. sometimes dancing for 5 hours takes a bit out of you. sometimes the crowd response isn't what it's about

I just remembered the asian girl running through the dancefloor with her hand over her mouth, gagging. Awesome. I've never seen people clear so fast.

You are absolutely right. I've been there many times myself which is strange cuz I like to give er' on the dance floor. Sometimes you're just too tired but you can definitely still have a good time.

However...I don't think this was the case at Maison.

The night was up and down for me....

Got there at 1:30, and, after seeing a bunch of people bypass the giant line after asking me who was spinning, I decided that waiting would be useless even though we had tickets...we then went next door for drinks at Ame before last call and 30 minutes later came out to see that the line hadn't moved at all. Ended up getting in at about 2:20 with lots of pleading with the bouncer and had to use the back booths for our coats since coat check was full. Despite the drama of entering, we were ready to party. The music was alright--for the first 10 minutes we were there, then it went downhill. I had to laugh at how bad the set was, but, being surrounded by a lot of familiar faces made up for it. The transformed Schmooze was impressive, and the crowd looked great (except for a few randoms like the guy with Situation glasses on...). I stayed till 5:30 hoping he'd play something decent but I just wasn't feeling it. Anyways, I think because Maison is so new, a lot of the top 40 crowd came to check it out even though it wasn't a Saturday night and that's what largely contributed to the chaos. When the hype dies down I think this club has a good set up and a lot of potential...it would be a great place to see other djs perform...

I had a good time. I got to Maison about midnight, and waited 20 mins in the wantickets line. I brought some friends who didn't have tickets, and they did not end up getting in (wantickets never failed me in Toronto, WMC, etc).

Coat check was a mess. People were saying it was closed? So a friend ended up stashing them in a back room by the washrooms. Problem solved. I guess I didn't experience the same clusterfuck as others did, so I am grateful

Sneak was OK. Nothing too special. The club was really nice, drinks were stupid expensive (a straight cranberry juice was $8!), and the crowd was awful and pushy. Eventually I was able to find a decent space at the front of the dancefloor with minimal distraction, and more immersive sound.

At one point a line formed in the guys washroom upstairs since people were doing coke and blocking about 3 urinals. People were like Cc'mon I really actually have to pee!". lol.

As for my first time seeing Ricardo... it was hit and miss. I enjoyed myself for the most part, even the cheesy sacs. That 80's bit kind of lost me. It was annoying when he was sidetracked and you had to wait for him to finish a conversation. That really messed up any flow that could enable you to get lost in the music. And he got sidetracked often....

Although I was in a "happy" mood anyway, so I even enjoyed the novelty of him disregarding the crowd in place of his own selfish satisfaction. So in the end. Meh.

I know its not common practice here but I really feel like a lot of the problems in regards to the crowd could have been avoided by having someone at door selectively controlling admission...

If someone gets to the front and doesn't look like they should be at this type of party, don't let them in.

If the doorman/doorwoman is unsure, ask a couple simple questions: Who's playing tonight? When was the last time he played in Toronto? Can you name a couple venues he's played at in the past? What are some of the labels that he favors?

Let the promoter(s) pick the doorperson and let security focus on searching people and safety...

I know this isn't the most friendly and inviting technique, but it works in a lot of places. I'm not suggesting it for every event, it surely isn't viable and would do more harm than good, but for certain bookings, I really feel it could make a world of difference.

Just throwing it out there. Thoughts?

I feel pretty much the exact same as the majority of people that posted.......no1 wants to here 80 coke music......at some point i was expecting him to do a killer remix.....n drop a dope beat to get the party amp'd....but utter fail....
I came out with a few friends and my sister who was really curious about the scene and this happened to be her first event, should've taken her to fw instead......got into the club after waiting in that ridiculous ticket line up, started to feel really bad for our american friends whos first toronto experience happened to be maison.....finally made it when that trumpet song came on, coat check was a shit show, so we decided to hold our jackets while it cooled down.....but that didn't happen......
thankfully I ran into Tara on the left side of the dj...its always nice to find her as she is the QUEEN of finding primo spots to party ..attempted to dance but couldnt get into it....saw my sister just standing around so i was like FUCK IT....n just started to jamm to whateva was on to salvage the night.....but than the distortion really started to fuck with my ears, clearly he was peaking the mixer....which we could see happening from the side......our solution to the distortion.....shove our jackets into the speakers....two birds 1 stone......alot of people in the crowd were noobs soo we maintained our position on the side where there were alot of familiar faces.......in the end we left around 445 so we wouldnt have to wait in another line to get out/find a cab.....
I think if i ever see ricardo again it would have to be in the day time.....hopefully he'll just be starting to get his buzz on rather than being a total wreck.....
I personally couldn't help wondering that he must not sleep much.....dude seems to be going hard in all the videos i've seen....man i would get tired....i gue

You've been to Berlin (Berghain, Bar25, Watergate, Weekend, ...) too many times.



I do agree that it would create a better crowd who actually knows what to expect and how to act but that can be pushed too far. I've seen people get turned away from Berghain ( I was turned away the first time I went but somehow ended up talking my way in) and other clubs with policies like this for no other reason other than being a guy, or them not liking your look. It can be a dangerous slippery slope that I am not quite sure I would want here in Toronto.

I think you better reconsider going to see Richie at FW and at Stereo. If there is one DJ who has a "schizophrenic alter ego" it's Richie. Richie can be the best DJ in the world when he wants to be and has something to prove but he can also be the most experimental, disjointed feeding his own ego of a DJ in the world. He is so hit or miss you just have to be prepared to be disappointed at times. Is he going to play a banging techno set, minimal, 80's, or is he going to have a symbol, a pot and a spoon and spend the night building his set to include a frying pan...I've seen Richie pull out Billie Jean at 10AM at Time Warp, some Prince at Minitech so don't be pissed off and cry bullshit if he does at FW or Stereo.

Yeah I agree its definitely a Catch-22 situation and may not work well, if it all here. Thing is though, with a booking on the scale of Ricardo, reaching capacity is always going to be a certainty and people will always be turned away, if their is a way to minimize the so called right people being left out in the cold, I think it's something worth exploring...

BoK sorta does this with the pins, although in a less extreme fashion, and I think its a great idea

and LOL @ the Berlin comment! Yeah its def a different scene, I've been shut out at Berghain once before as well

Bar 25 and Wilder Renate are def the worst imo, they use the same doorlady a lot of the time and she's VERY selective...

I skipped going to Berghain one night to just go to Bar25...I got there to no line up, she looked at me and before I could say anything said "Private party" and turned her back to me.

Agreed, sometimes it's taken too far in Berlin....especially at certain venues...

That being said I've found Watergate has a good policy, they'll usually always give the patrons the benefit of the doubt and have a quick chat to determine is they're there for the music and experience or just to get fucked up and be seen...

Most popular is not equal to best. But generally I agree, Richie Hawtin can be alright but also can make your ears bleed. I would definitely reconsider seeing him (unless you are a die-hard fan of his) even though if he does turn out to be good the vibe is likely to be great. If you look at seeing a dj as an investment it is probably a bad one as there are alternatives that provide equal or greater return with significantly lower risk, thus providing much higher expected return. Instead of seeing Hawtin i would go to see Umek - a dj that nearly always destroys the dancefloor. no frying pan, no cowbell, no billie jean, no risk of girlfriend/friends bitchin about your music taste after you take them to the party.

So true. I don't think he should reconsider going to see him at FW and Stereo, but he should be fully prepared for what you said above.

When I was reading this thread earlier today, noticing how controversial it was I was reminded of old Richie reviews. He is the most hit or miss DJ around. But when he's on, he's absolutely untouchable.

lmao. Perfect description of Ricardo's mixing. Sometimes he'll just punch a mix in, and it will be *almost* a trainwreck, but he'll correct it in less than one beat. It is a really disorienting effect, but gets the crowd going. I love it.
