Good grief. Rann's little moan actually dug this pointless thread even further into the shitpile

"I was just messing around/trolling" = "I have no arguments left and I'm trying to save face."

I'm kind of sure he was trolling.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Nov-18-2010 16:06:

Of course. Being a master troll, he read this thread, saw that he could argue Oakenfold was the greatest ever and piss people off, and formed a cohesive argument consisting of thousands of words, including many references to his real-life experience of clubbing in the 90s and completely sensible responses to the people who disagreed with him. All this was predicated on the subtle yet sophisticated trolling tool of misreading the OP, arguing on the wrong terms and hoping nobody noticed.

OR

It's obvious even in his "I TROLL U" revelation post he still believes what he has written about Oakenfold. It's not even as though what he's written is wrong as such. He's simply realised that it's completely irrelevant to the terms of the thread and so he looks like a fool for calling everyone idiots. Having typed several thousand words, he is too invested in the argument to humbly admit he was wrong. Instead he'll use the fact he insulted me a lot as the most tenuous possible evidence of TROLLAN and suddenly renounce his position in the thread. Which everyone sees through anyway.

Don't be naive. Just because the guy holds court in the Production section doesn't mean he is immune from making a fool of himself.

I missed you, music discussion

Posted by EddieZilker on Nov-18-2010 17:46:

I'm not defending his technique but RANN's always been a bit of a long-winded typist. Whether that bleeds into his trolling expeditions isn't for me to say. If it were me arguing that Oakenfold was better than PVD, I might be lent towards being long-winded to enhance the credibility of my troll.

There are a few positions which are dead giveaways of trolling. The Earth is Flat, Why has My Son Asked Me to Stop Offering His Friends Back Rubs?, and Atlas Shrugged is the Best Book Ever Written. They retard conventional wisdom, mores, and comprehension so horribly that their assumptions must be enhanced with vehemence in order to sell them as plausibly subject to argument. Even with that vehemence, the topics almost render themselves moot and an astute moderator will lock the thread, instantaneously.

Perhaps sloppily, RANN played the seething fanboy, foaming at the mouth with the essential combination of ignorant familiarity, loaded antagonism, and blatant error requisite to sell an otherwise implausible belief that Oakenfold should be allowed in the top 10 trance artists of all time (and above J00F, PVD, et al).

I've read RANN somewhat extensively. I've rarely seen him pop off like that. When he does disagree with someone, he's usually got them dead to rights on the outset. Oakenfold is typically despised as a joke in the Music Production Studio. Even Deadmau5 gets more respect. I may have missed something but I've never seen him take up Oakenfold's defense, there. Here he was clearly demonstrating views commonly held by ignorant newbies. The only other explanation which makes remote sense is that he was tipsy when he ventured into this thread and became even more blottoed as the argument progressed. Personally, I suspect a little from column A and a little from column B.

To his (troll's) detriment, he let you coax him into back-peddling on his position. His vitriolic, abusive word salad left him open to your rigorous cherry picking of arguments so absurd that I'd have been surprised to see you ignore them. Your logic flames, rendered with the persistence of an unchecked police interrogator, eventually sealed the fate of the argument as a whole. That was when I first posted after my hiatus from this dismal thread.

His admission to trolling was partly out of necessity. It still may have been a sloppy troll, but he's a forum resident. If I were a TA in Training, with no credibility to uphold, I wouldn't have yielded even that.

He weren't trolling mate, and if he was, then fuck me, what a waste of his time and everyone else's.

If it were me, I rather be serious and look daft than be writing all that for a joke...

This thread, from the word, go, was a staggering waste of time - particularly in making any logical determination of which artist might be best of all-time. Fun? Yes. But it's also as useless as jack-o-lanterns on Christmas.

You mean repeatedly referring back to anecdotes from his clubbing days in the mid-90s and berating anyone who doesn't have similar experience? Yeah, common newbie behaviour.

I could spend another hour composing a post which refutes each your examples as a tactic of trolling and part of an overall strategy but I'll be fucked to waste it in this thread. Not that you're uninteresting or that I don't welcome your thoughts on the matter but...

This awful thread and an hour spent concocting speculative conjecture based upon how I would troll it using RANN's arguments - not worth our time.

Bingo. I never troll apart from the afore mentioned biannual occasion (well spotted btw) when a thread arises that is esoteric and subjective enough to make good fodder and it happens to coincide with a slump of activity in the PF. It's really only when the planets align at a time when I'm not immersed in technical discussions in the production forum.

Eddie, that's why I said you ruined it for me. I knew the second you posted I was out of time, but christ, I didn't think you'd have it down that well. I am both impressed and slightly disturbed by it. The only thing I will say exclude is not taking the subject matter or the twists so literally - I had to push it further, as well as recede position to keep the subject (in both meanings) interested. Sometimes you just have to throw up a could "or long winded" explanation of info to obscure the center, as without it you lose your cover. Like putting big, wide reverb on a singer you know is going to have to fake it.

Your further speculations are also correct. If you're going to make something up, at least have a plausible root. It's about suspension of disbelief; I referenced the past (and it fitted so nicely for obvious argumentative reasons) but then dressed it up to fit the ambiguity of the subject. Throw in some other names, dis a few others then question the primary antagonists' credibility and away we go. Again, anyone that knows me would have spotted it, as Eddie did. I will say this - Jack is certainly interesting and not uneducated. Never a dull moment.

The clues were all in there though, and many were even pointed out but that's the great thing about people who just can't let things go, especially their own self belief and their need to impress it on others or at least aggressively refute another's . That's why I rarely ever post in the MDF, because I don't feel my opinion on these type of subjects matter. I'm not a sucessful EDM artist or Musician so what the fuck do I know above and beyond anyone else on this subject?

Now give me something technical, and I may very well not be so humble on the subject in hand.....
