HAd this on at work so have been interrupted a few times but still gave it a good listen. Tres bon monsieur, lots of excellent tunes good vibe and flow throughout, well done

this section i liked cuz the transitions made sense:

i think you should have let the mix simmer for a few weeks and looked more for tracks. the overall feeling is rushed. Not unpleasant -- rushed. did you like anything you found? why did you pick these tracks?

cheers for the feedback. I tried to come up with 2 types of track originally, the stuff like the end, a big edgier & crazy, and the earlier, more laidback stuff. Today was the only day in the next couple of weeks that I knew I'd have free so I got it out of the way rather than let it slip & ending up not getting anything done, whereas on some other genres that I have better knowledge of, I'd have had more confidence in my ability to do that and know I could put something out that wasn't too bad if I had to rush it.

I like the beats involved in the end tracks, but generally I'm a heavier type of listener in the sense that I grew up on fast music from original jungle/rave/hardcore/speedcore/techno. I listened to a lot of tracks and asked a couple of people for recommendations to give me variety to begin with. Some of the stuff was heavier, more vsnares type and breakcore, and some didn't really grab my head, but generally I liked all what I put in here. I had absolutely no confidence in mixing it though and found it immensely difficult, as I would had I got ambient although I at least have a better knowledge of that to start with In general though, I find it more a listening type of music than something that I'd listen to a whole mix of, or even an album of. I guess also the basis that I think it's bad was simply because I've heard no sets of it before, so have nothing to judge it on but I know that guys who've entered this, sand leaper & montana notably are very proficient in mixing styles I find awkward, so I guess I'd have thought they'd have done very good efforts had they got this pick

I'll have a listen although it's not all my thing, but I'll keep it on my laptop because my sister in law is a massive trip-hop fan so I'll play it for her when I visit them in May and see what she thinks to it, and bump this then

Posted by pozz on Feb-02-2011 18:37:

that's cool man. but i heard your trance and dnb mixes so i know you are capable. it's a bit of a discouragement to not get what you want, and that leaked into the mix more than it should have. you should still explore the genre more, cuz then, you know, there alotta good stuff. d'n'b n jungle flavour too.

last 3 examples:

and a set (braindance, towards breaks and other juicy cool stuff):

Well, this challenge isn't about getting genres you're already good at. It's about getting stuff you're not as good at (i.e. genres you rarely if ever play). So frankly, the challenge was a success as far as you are concerned, because you actually went outside of your comfort zone, heard some new stuff you hardly ever touched before and made a mix of it.

whereas you got one you're good at sods law I'd have loved to have had a go at garage.

Who's stopping you from doing a garage mix outside of the competition and sharing it?

Or a Para Para Mix?

Totally wicked set. The whole thing had me drooling. Absolutely delicious, from start to finish. Mixing was beyond excellent, flow was outstanding, and the tracks were gold. So very tasty and lush. My favorites had to be 48 minutes and the more hip-hoppish tracks in the back half. This is exactly what I envisioned when I suggested Trip Hop. You executed this perfectly. I'll be listening to this plenty more times.

Ian, I'll get to your mix later. I finished my set today also, I'll be posting it in a little while.

Posted by pozz on Feb-02-2011 21:51:

very very nice mix Teez. listened to this while rocking in my chair.

Posted by Teezdalien on Feb-03-2011 01:08:

Thanks everyone who's listened and for the comments, much apppreciated.

@Ian - I didn't think this was as bad as I was expecting from what you've said. I didn't have any problems with the flow or really feel any horrible clashing or anything. Would the last track be considered dnb? Either way I enjoyed that track a lot and I'm certainly no expert on IDM. Only complaint here is that it would have been nice had it been a bit longer, I wanted more.

I really don't care for hardstyle. However, even in a genre with a severe lack of ideas, there are a few gems. I actually kinda had fun making this set; I looked for the most unique recent tracks and tried to execute them as well as they could be. I kept it short, as too much of this stuff just hurts my eardrums. I also made sure I kept a distinct line between Hard Trance and Hardstyle, trying to blend some of the better parts of Hard Trance while maintaining the Hardstyle flavor. Knowing me, I built it up to some of the hardest business around, and then threw in a full-on psytrance + Hardstyle crossover at the end.

Headhunterz - Dreamcatcher [Scantraxx Reloaded]
Alphaverb - Rockin Da Rework (Extended Mix) [AVIO Records]
The Machine - Times Like These [Sys-x Records]
Donkey Rollers - The Fusion of Sound [Fusion Records]
Catatonic Overload - Paralyzed [Theracords]
DJ Thera - Underground [Theracords]
Impact - Carillon 2010 (Zapp Mix) [Hardstyle Germany]
Geck-0 vs Thera - Trespassing [Theracords]
Aladdin - U Know This [Meira Records]

Nice mix, Teez. You clearly know your way around the genre, and dropped a lot of classics. The mixing was very good, occasionally sounded a bit out of key but mostly very smooth.

Well if full on is anything cheesy in psytrance that you don't like, then yes, otherwise no.

Thanks for listening mate. I thought it would be a pretty obvious looking list of artists especially for people like yourself that really know their shiz. I've been quite fond of trip hop for a long time but had never taken the time to make a mix out of it. I didn't do an awful lot of digging with this, preferring to make good use of what I already have. It actually turned out better and smoother than I had first expected so I can't complain.

Good stuff zip. Haven't really been a keen follower of hardstyle for quite a few years now and didn't know any of these tracks although honestly I like my hardstyle a bit deeper and more brooding. Technically I liked it, I couldn't fault anything, well mixed and had a steady building kinda flow. I really liked how the tune around 33 mins was bought in. Like Ian's mix it would have been nice being just a bit longer, but I guess if it hurts your eardrums, it's more than adequate.

It's cheesy and it's full on. And shit. Simple as that.

That's one of the things I tried to avoid, is to make it too deep and brooding, as I felt some of the tracks from Straight On Black were more Hard Trance than Hardstyle. It was difficult to draw the line, because some of those tracks were super cool. I just didn't want there to be two hard trance mixes this round.

Rodri Santos, you suggested this genre, why haven't you listened yet?

Posted by Ian on Feb-05-2011 14:46:

Just finished your set, Nick.

I think you've done a good job and kept it quite trancey although that last bit is blatantly not hardstyle Gone a different way to what I would've had I got it, as I know some older tunes and would've also used some trancier stuff to keep it flowing. Good effort though.

Posted by netroM on Feb-05-2011 15:52:

Ian's mix:
I agree with pozz. The last part was pretty good. The rest was decent, but it didn't really make me hungry for more, like the last part did. The DnB track was nice

zip:
This was a pleasant surprise
I've earlier only been exposed to very shit (imo) hardstyle akin to the ones in qlimax "trailers". This mix was very varied, and so it didn't bore me as easily as the trailers or jumpstyle vids I've seen do. Great effort

Posted by Zyklon_Jay on Feb-05-2011 18:08:

good job tez. the tracks were fairly obvious, but that is what made this great to listen to. I've not listened to most of this stuff for quite a long while so it was nice to get reacquainted.

35 mins happens to the best of us

Thanks for listening, Ian. I specifically made sure it was Hardstyle and not Hard Trance. And of course you would have done something different with older tunes, you probably have a little experience with it. As far as the last track is concerned, you don't think that psy track is brimming with Hardstyle concepts? Yeah it's not 100% Hardstyle but it sure reminds me of it.

Thanks for the review, netroM. Hope it was hard enough for ya

That's fair enough too. I do think the Straight On Black stuff is definitely hardstyle although it's definitely darker and techier territory. I just have a personal preference for this over the more anthemic style which most hardstyle seems to fall into these days.
I think Rodri's too busy playing prog/tech trance.

Thanks for listening Jay. I guess the problem I had around 35 mins was mixing the FSOL track which is in 3/4 time into 6 Underground in 4/4. The result was pretty whack, didn't work as well as I'd have liked.

I bet Evanti - What a Rush would have been perfect after Donkey Rollers - The Fusion of Sound, but alas, as the only track I truly adored on that label, it had already been played in this challenge once before. (Round 2, Jasper)
