i know this cuz i ran into Lee at La Vagabunda restaurant here on 5th avenue. 
quick review of the viva party while i'm still awake:
Got to Blue Parrot around 2am , walked right in with my vip band even though there was a line of maybe 200 at the door cuz the place was PAAAAAAACKED.
Packed but somewhat comfortable room wise. Lee burridge was on he started dropping some classic tracks (couple of tunes i forgot the name of that were on Sasha revolver mix) mixed with some new bangers. He had the crowd going and the vibe all around the venue was excellent.
Then Lawler came on around 3:15, first half hour of his set was a bit of a warm up but then around 4am he started playing tribal banger after banger and continued right until the very end. The last 2 tracks he played were melodic deep tracks that were perfect for the sunrise. Even when he stopped playing the place was probably at 80% capacity.
Overall an absolutely great night of music and lots of great people, very diverse crowd.

quick recap of last night:
wokeup at 2am and headed over to La Santanera. Much smaller venue compared to Blue Parrot. Nina Kraviz was on the decks, was super packed in the main room. She was playing some heavy deep tribal followed by some BASS HEAVY mid 90's ghetto chicago house tracks that sounded very refreshing. She's quite the dancer behind the decks i gotta say, the crowd was feeding off her energy.
Around 3am i headed to Blue Parrot and Davide Squillace was playing , heard him play his track "That Ginger Ponytail". The crowd was definitely digging his track selection as was i. Around 4am Dubfire got on. He opened his set with Maceo Plex's "Stay High For Me". He started kinda deep housey but then went into full on techno mode. My only criticism of his set was that he kept using the same fucking PRESET EFFECTS. One of them was a clap loop, the other was an echo/delay effect. Effects in moderation is great, but he kept using them every 15-30 seconds which got crazy annoying. Then i headed back to La Santanera to see a bit of Guy Gerber's set, he was dropping some heavy techno including his own remix of "Tourist Trap".
Quick question for people at BPM:
If you have no presale tickets (sales ended) or wristbands, is it still easy (or possible) to get into events?
I may be going there last minute this weekend, and want to know if I'll have a tough time coming with just cash. What would the typical cash cover be?

Went to Serge Devant and Dirty South @ Pink Elephant. Was nice to finally here some house music. The minimal go nowhere music was starting to get to me.
Pink Elephant was cool, high end alcohol was kinda expensive so I suggest getting smashed before.
It is still easy to get it without presale. Usually $5 dollars more at the door, so about same thing when you factor service fee.
You can buy tickets at the shop by kool beach but there is a line usually so you might as well just buy at the door.

I'm not one for long winded reviews... this festival was un-fucking-believeable in so many ways... the crowd, vide, venues and dj's were all top notch! Richie Hawtin at Blue Parrot for the win! Can't wait till next year.

Last night here. Seams like I've been here forever! (since NYE)
Actually didn't party as much. Did touristy things like going to see Tulum, Xcaret amusement park and going to Isla Mujueres (island off of Cancun)
Bout one final round of partying tonight! Gonna go check out Steve Angello....

its official...as predicted, bpm is the new wmc. (funny, but i actually just cxld our flights to wmc yesterday) this was the year that bpm put themselves on the map bigtime and everyone has taken notice.

lee burridge day party, prob the best crowd/party of the week. tho i would like him to give us a couple more bpm's, cause his sets turn out to be a lil on the slow side.
worst crowd was the mark knight day party...yikes - i felt like i was at the jersey shore.
i skipped out on the angello party last night...im beat. plus, i thought his billing was weird and out of place given this week's talent
other best sets/parties - heidi, lawler, hawtin/dubfire backtoback, all parties at canibal royal...list goes on and on.
props to the bpm folks. ten days of this and i am beat. lol.
i will be back next year for sure.

Parties I attended were Danny Tenaglia NYE, Dirty South & Serge Devant @ Pink Elephant, D. Ramirez & Mark Knight @ Kool Beach and Steve Angello @ Blue Parrot.
As I stated before its a great festival for tech heads. I can stand it if I am really f'ed up, but the house beats are what I enjoy...here's a video from Steve Angello at Blue Parrot towards the end after the sun had just came up.

While the population of Playa del Carmen is only 150,000, it swells to about 200,000 with both BPM and non-BPM visitors. The town is very compact, so you can walk anywhere within 15-20 mins. VIP wristbands this year were $350, up from $200 last year; however, VIP enables oneself bypass lineups and to go to the daytime events as well, so I was able to see Mark Knight, Lee Burridge, Nic Fanciulli, John Digweed and unannounced djs Richie Hawtin and Dubfire,etc, during the daytime. I estimated I probably attended over $600 worth of acts at BPM, so I certainly got my pesos worth. However, like any music festival, you sort of wish you could be at two or three different places at the same time. For the most part, the nightclubs and daytime events were insanely packed, so you had to be rather astute with finding that one sweet spot for dancing. Highlight set for me was Loco Dice at Blue Parrot, a hard, mind-tripping, energetic set that kept my feet moving and ears listening. Very disappointed that my cell memory was acting up, so I missed out taking pictures and videos at the must-see Alux Cave gig (read Jeff Button's solid review for more perspective). Also disappointed I left during a very good set by Droog (and potentially good sets from Jamie Jones. Art Department and Damian Lazarus) to hear the abomination by Steve Angello - hands down the most sub-par set I heard all week at BPM. The cave was getting unbearbly hot and we had to meet several others at Angello but I wasn't feeling his set, which for some reason I was not surprised Long, drawn-out breakdowns, all SHM choons, MoS anthems and pretty much an awkward booking for such a talent-laiden festival. I have seen Angello perform better before when he was focusing more on dancefloor flow, rather than crowd adulation from playing his athems, but after hearing quality all week, the set was even more un-palatable. Tant piss.  The weather in Playa was generally warm (mid 20s, party sunny), sort of what you would expect in Quebec or Ontario during the summer months. It did rain one morning, just before the last couple of days there. In turn, this opened up the city to more humidity and temperatures "feeling like" mid 30s. There were also plenty of reasonably priced accommodations in Playa, I was fortunate enough to stay with Jeff Button and his crew, all great, stand-up ppl. Thank you again, Jeff, DE, Peter, Meg & Monica. We were only three-min walk to Kool Beach and Mamitas; for those who are budget conscious, condos are the 'way to go' as you get much more space and value for your money. You can simply load up on food at the massive supermarkets that are walking distance to the action and use the ample kitchens you typically have in your condo. Speaking of Kool Beach, I did manage to shoot this 'hypothetical' video of deadmau5 at Kool Beach: A budget of $1500 should be sufficient for anyone wanting to spend a memorable week hearing great music in a resort city, with friendly hard-working locals and mostly cool, laid-back foreigners from all over the globe. Oh, and btw, the dude factor ratio at the nighttime events is like 5:1, guys to girls, so if you care mostly about that rather than the music, then Cancun is only 20 mins away hehe. Daytime events were pretty even, nonetheless. One of these days girls will start to like good music and maybe even-out the numbers |
