Damn, Kane slammed that one in.

Awesome match. I will miss Android Auto's mentions of a certain Doctor Congo when discussing World Cup fixtures, but this was a bloody great game for a country that had not shown up at all since rebranding.

Good on England though. Let's see what Belgium and Senegal have in store for us, no one seems to have much of an edge over the other.

Edit: About Brazil versus Norway. Although every model I've seen gives Brazil roughly a 2-in-3 chance of advancing, we've never beaten Norway. Ever. And they've never advanced past the round of 16. Someone is bound to break a tabboo, and I'm afraid the numbers aren't actually very helpful here

This was a good second half even though I�m not a fan of either teams. I was impressed by the lack of shenanigans. Take that Figo, you flaming fuck.

Haha, people found a way to rate the matches as if the World Cup was a TV series on IMDB. The top 3 have been "Belgium vs. Senegal", "England vs. Croatia", and "Algeria vs. Austria", although Portugal versus Croatia earlier today was absolute drama. It's the first time I've seen a match that wasn't a draw go all the way into extra time

A lot has happened since this website last let me post. Germany lost on penalties, for the first time in my life. England were a bit crap again but Kane bailed us out. And I've just stayed up and watched Cape Verde give Argentina the fright of their lives.

Is it just me or does this Argentina look kinda like a crap 90s Premier League side? They're a tough, streetwise unit, but take Messi out of the equation and there really isn't much magic there. They were hitting so many long balls over the top of the defence I half expected to look down to the bench and see Sean Dyche managing them.

Messi magic isn't going to get Argentina all the way through. France will eat their lunch.

If anything it underlines what an astonishing achievement it was for Messi to drag this lot to glory at the last World Cup. I know the '22 side had Di Maria as well, who added a bit more creativity, but even then they were the weakest World Cup winning side I've seen in my lifetime.

Also, this expanded 48 team World Cup has undeniably resulted in a lot of fixture padding and low drama in the group stage, but it has also given some small nations the chance to make some unforgettable memories that they would have never have had in a 32 team World Cup. You could tell the Cape Verde fans were absolutely thrilled: there was no gloating, no "We're going to win!" bravado. They're just happy the world knows they exist and that their team have done such a tiny country proud. Sidny Lopes Cabral being so visibly shocked that he'd scored a wonder goal against the world champions, and then the touching amateurism of him holding up a World Cup knockout match for a full five minutes while he tried to find his girlfriend in the crowd, is an instant classic of a sporting moment.

Paraguay playing dirty af.

I was ready to root for them as underdogs but not after seeing that first half.

Lol, good luck now Paraguay, can't play all-defense any more if you want to stay in this thing.

Finally. Have to give props to Paraguay's keeper for saving their sorry asses multiple times, though.

It wouldn't be a World Cup without a South American team engaging in a spot of viveza criolla against a superior European opponent.

Morocco-Canada was a pleasure to watch, though. Both teams hustling like hell but Canada was just outmatched.

Morocco looked completely lost in the first 12 minutes! I believe had Canada scored then it might have been a different outcome

In Brighton atm and dead exhausted from the day's antics but about to go out to watch England. Was hoping to see a good match while here and couldn't ask for better really.

I had never, in my life, had the image of a Sele��o player missing a penalty etched into my retina. Turns out it had been 40 years since it last happened, and we couldn't afford to miss that penalty.

Seriously... the last time a tall blue-eyed blonde Norwegian like Haaland broke my heart like this, I was still in high school and she was already on her way home when I asked her out on a date

Sure, the stats had overwhelmingly been pointing to a Brazilian victory, but we've been systematically losing to European teams in knockout matches since 2006, and it's been a while since we made through the second round. Also, we've never beaten Norway for some reason. Only Hungary and some other team I can't be arsed to look up have a similar record.

Edit: For the record, I'm equally torn about the next match: England are the best team, but Mexicans are undefeated at the Azteca. Playing at that altitude is no joke.
