Apparently it's all blown up and most of it is bullshit. There are people there right now who are saying that hardly any of those things are happening.

i never done it, but when working in the hostel met many people who had some had funny stories, others didnt.... but its always an option for travellers

there is also this site www.hitchhikers.org
where you can jump in a car with others and just pay petrol, i have a friend who done this through spain/portugal who highly recommends it
