Bell is pushing hard to get the Pre out in early August

A week ago, Canadas Bell announced that it has the exclusive rights to get the Pre party started in Canada. With an ETA as vague as 2H09 however, its a bit hard to get excited just yet not that those South of the 49th parallel have had a fun time with their 1H09 launch window. Thankfully weve received a little nugget of information from one of our ninjas who is now able to confirm that Bell is working feverishly to get the Palm Pre in time for an early August release, with the only real variable to this launch window being the number of devices Bell is able to score from Palm. You see, Bell doesnt want to repeat the whole BlackBerry Storm launch fiasco in which Bell launched the Storm on December 10th with well under a thousand devices in its possession. The good news however, is that if Bell is able to snag enough handsets then the launch could happen at an earlier date. Then again, its more than likely that demand for the device in the US will throw a wrench into Bells plans. Again.

Thanks, D!

That's too bad, Bell locked down the Pre

Word on the streetz ... the Data Value Pack is going again. This time it's $40 and instead of 500mb, it's 1GB and you'll never get to that limit unless you tether or stream audio & video

It use to be $30 then $35 and now $40 after June 2nd.

Both times the Data Value Packs was increased, something was bumped up and 99% of ppl won't even hit the limit.

(Yes you can add this new $40 for 1GB to tehter off the RocketSticks, but once Roger's detects it's ... they will give you a call)

Old article but worth reading because it indicate that globealive is the next player entering the cell phone market.

I can't wait...july is just around the corner and I want to cut my cell phone costs down. I'm with Fido and that $17.50 fee costs me $47+ per month with all the extras. I'd rather get the Globealive bill since it gives more and includes the extras.

Phasing out of system access fees "good news" for Canadian Cell phone usersValue brands are the first to do away with the hidden fee that is widely despised.
11/14/2008 6:00:00 AM By: Vawn Himmelsbach

The move by leading Canadian carriers to scrap system access fees for some of their cell phone brands is a sign the tide may be changing in this market in favour of the consumer.

Telus Corp. was the first major telco to scrap the fee when it launched the Koodo brand in March.

Now Rogers Communications Inc. is following suit re-launching its Fido brand, minus the system access fee. The company is also offering lower rate plans and shorter-term contracts.

Industry insiders say these aren't isolated initiatives, but are indicative of a trend one that has been sparked by the prospect of increased competition in the Canadian wireless market.

The federal government's wireless spectrum auction that concluded in July will open up the cell phone market long dominated by Rogers, Bell Mobility Inc. and Telus.

The auction essentially reserved for small players, 40 per cent of the 105 megahertz of airwaves up for sale. Globalive Communications Inc., a Toronto-based provider that sells home phone and Internet services under the Yak brand came out as the biggest winner.

The 30 licenses, across the country, which it purchased for $442 million, ideally positions the company to offer nation-wide cell phone service.

Experts say the increased competition sparked by this opening up of the market may force incumbents to offer cell phone users better deals so as to retain their business.

"Studies in the U.S. indicate that whenever a fourth or fifth player enters one of that country's regional markets subscribers experience a substantial reduce in service fees," said Michael Janigan, executive director and general counsel for the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.
Another industry insider suggests the drivers behind Rogers' scrapping of system access fees for Fido are not entirely clear.

"It's like a chicken-and-egg question, because it raises the question: is Rogers responding to things like the launch of Koodo by Telus?" said Lawrence Surtees, vice-president and principal analyst, communications practice, at Toronto-based IDC Canada.

So those pieces of shit at rogers are going to be screwing alot of people over soon.

This is a summary of what is already going to happen in Alberta and BC on June 2nd. I think Ontario is following suit too.

Summary of changes at June 2, 2009 (affects all devices)

I will post a summary of changes here for June 2, 2009 but I have also included the relevant changes in the plans below. Also note, these changes will be similar with Telus and Bell as the gBig 3 await for the new wireless carrier arrivals.

1.) The My5 option will no longer be available across all Family Plans.

2.) Price increase in the Data Family Plan to $90 from $80.

3.) All student plans ($25 and $45 options) and all student discounts (Free 6PM evenings) expired. Returning in August/September time frame.

4.) Unlimited Network Calling (free calling to/from all Rogers, Fido, and Rogers Home Phone) expired across all plans.

5.) Unlimited Network Calling feature replaced with gDouble your Daytime minutesh promotion.

6.) Decrease in minutes in the $45 Mega Value Combo plan to 100 minutes + 50 minutes from 200 minutes total.

It looks like Rogers is pretty serious about moving those Magics and Dreams because it just resurrected the 6GB/$30 data promo. As you can imagine however, there is a catch to this in that it is supposed to be exclusively for those who purchased one of the two Android handsets that Rogers launched today. Also, a 3-year data contract is required and the promotion expires on Canada Day. Be that as it may, we were able to log into one of our Rogers accounts and successfully add it to two lines, one being registered to a BlackBerry and the other to an iPhone. Youre more than free to try and add it yourself just dont blame us if Rogers smacks you on the hand and takes it away from you.

Last month for about 2 weeks, during "peak" time my speeds was so bad and it came to a point it was moving dailup speed.

Then one Sunday my connection was down for 15 hrs+ and i gave them a nice call and found out they were doing some system upgrade in my area.

Now, I'm moving at full speed all day and night. Anyone else have this or is it just my account?

sent to teksavvy customers, but it really does involve everyone, even if you aren't using teksavvy.
------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Customers,

In March 2008 Bell started throttling its Wholesale Customers (TekSavvy among a group of many) without notice. We attempted to have the CRTC force Bell to stop as it removed our ability to do business and give Market choice. The throttling was done in the name of congestion, even if Bell, at the same time launched higher speeds (which they did not share with their wholesalers) and also dabbled with launching IPTV, which consumes even more capacity.

The CRTC sided with Bell in November 2008 but launched a Public Hearing to discuss Network Management Practices, clearly showing they made a decision on throttling without having all the details in hand to do so. As a result we launched a request to reverse their decision from November (The Review & Vary) in May 2009.

The only way we are going to make a difference at this point is to get full public support to stop companies like Bell from bullying the market and the regulators! The Telecom and Cableco Monopolies control 96% of our marketplace, so if we don't stand up and voice our concerns, this will become a two party dance where choices and services are going to be completely removed and rates raised to unreasonable levels!

Here are the details on how to submit your comments:

1) Go to:
http://support.crtc.gc.ca/crtcsubmi...com.aspx?lang=e

2) Select "Part VII / PN " from the drop down list and then click "Next"

3) In box entitled "Subject" line, insert "CRTC File #:
8662-P8-200907727"

4) In the box entitled "Description / Comments / Questions", insert any comments that you may have on the review and vary application.

5) If you would like to attach a document, select "yes" and follow the instructions for attaching a file.

As indicated in the Title, I believe the deadline is June 22nd, so don't wait to long

Video: Palm Pre caught playing with GSM SIM in Vietnam

Palm to disclose UK Pre launch details next week?

We heard way back at CES that a GSM Pre was in the works, but not until now have we heard who exactly in the world would be using it. According to confirmation received by T3, Palm is gearing up to disclose the whos, whats and wheres behind the UK launch next week, meaning that we've got seven days (give or take) to twiddle our thumbs until we know which carrier (O2 or Vodafone, most likely), how much and when it'll be available for purchase. We know it's agonizing, but at least you've a time frame to circle in your Trapper Keeper now, right?

The Pre gets PlayStation gaming and more thanks to ZodTTD (video)

If you're familiar with the emulation scene (and let's be honest, you are reading Engadget), then you know the name ZodTTD -- the brain behind some of the best jailbroken emus for the iPhone, including variations on the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and most importantly... the TurboGrafx-16. Now the master-hacker has brought his goods to the Pre, cooking up a version of psx4all on the Palm device, with the aforementioned GBA and TG16 ports on the way! Interestingly, he reports that the performance on the Pre is actually better than that of the iPhone 3GS, and of course he's hacked access to the keyboard, allowing for (more) proper control of games. There are still kinks that are being worked out (sound emulation, screen scaling, etc.), but it looks like we can expect big things in the near future. We at Engadget know everyone will rest a bit easier tonight knowing that real gaming on the Pre is at hand. We'll hopefully be getting our hands on a version soon, but for now hit the read link for more info, and check out the full video after the break!

Employee Shot at Clarendon Apple Store

At least two employees were inside the store at the Clarendon Market Common in the 2700 block of Clarendon Boulevard after it opened at 10 a.m., police said. Someone rang the doorbell at the back door at about 10:15 a.m., and a 26-year-old female employee opened it.

The gunman apparently opened fire right away, striking the victim in the shoulder.

"One of the employees went back to the rear entrance, and the other employee heard a loud bang," Arlington County police Detective Crystal Nosal said.

Police are searching the area via helicopter and with K-9 units for a culprit described as a black man in his late 20s or early 30s about 6-feet tall with a medium build and some type of facial hair.

The back door generally is used for deliveries.

Nothing appears to have been taken from the store.

The employee is said to have non-life threatening injuries.

"We are shocked by this senseless act of violence and our thoughts are with our coworker and her family during her recovery," Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette said.

"Palm Pre official on O2 and Movistar in Europe, launch "in time for holidays"

PRESS RELEASE: Palm Pre to Launch in Europe with O2 and Movistar
Palm webOS Phone to Arrive in UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain on Local Telefonica Networks

WINDSOR, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 07, 2009--
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that the Palm(R) Pre(TM) phone is scheduled to be available initially in the UK, Ireland and Germany exclusively on the O2 network, and in Spain exclusively on the Movistar network, in time for the holidays. Palm Pre, the first phone based on the new Palm webOS(TM) mobile platform, brings your information from the many places it resides -- on your phone, at work or on the web -- into one simple, integrated view.(1)

"Europe continues to be an important region for Palm, and we're proud to work with O2 and Movistar to spread the excitement Palm Pre has already ignited in North America," said Jon Rubinstein, Palm chairman and chief executive officer. "Since we showed Palm Pre at Mobile World Congress in February, there's been a great deal of anticipation for an announcement about European availability, and that day is here."

"We are fast becoming the home of the smartphone with the addition of the hotly-anticipated Palm Pre to our already extensive portfolio," said Matthew Key, chairman and chief executive officer, Telefonica Europe. "Our customers will be the first outside of North America to experience one of the most successful mobile devices of the year."

In its first weekend of availability in the United States, Palm Pre broke Sprint's previous first-weekend sales records. Palm Pre also is scheduled to debut in Canada with Bell Mobility in the second half of 2009.

Palm Pre introduces a breakthrough user interface and hardware design that makes it one of the most integrated and user-friendly mobile phones on the market. Featuring a smooth, elegantly rounded ergonomic design and a physical keyboard that slides out only when needed, Palm Pre is engineered to feel natural in your hand and comfortably small in your pocket. When closed, Palm Pre is ideal for phone calls, web browsing, music, photos and videos; when open, Palm Pre is optimized for email and text messaging. It provides an exceptional experience for phone calls, whether held to your ear, over speakerphone or via Bluetooth.

With its curved slider and gesture-controlled touch interface, Palm Pre fuses exquisite design with the revolutionary webOS software for fast access to content on the device or web. Invented exclusively for mobile use, webOS offers an instinctive user experience that seems to anticipate your needs.

Key Features and Benefits of Palm webOS

Palm Synergy(TM), a key feature of the new webOS, brings your information from all the places it resides into one logical view. You don't have to worry about tracking multiple calendars, contacts and messaging applications -- Synergy seems to think ahead to bring you a more comprehensive and truly representative view of your life.

-- Linked contacts -- With Synergy, you have a single view that links your
contacts from a variety of sources, so accessing them is easier than
ever. For example, if you have the same contact listed in your
Outlook(2), Google and Facebook accounts, Synergy recognizes that
they're the same person and links the information, presenting it to you
as one listing.

-- Layered calendars -- Your calendars can be seen on their own or layered
together in a single view, combining work, family, friends, sports teams
or other interests. You can toggle to look at one calendar at a time, or
see them all at a glance.

-- Combined messaging -- Synergy lets you see all your conversations with
the same person in a chat-style view, even if it started in IM and you
want to reply with text messaging. You can also see who's active in a
buddy list right from contacts or email, and start a new conversation
with just one touch.
By smartly integrating your information, webOS seems to think ahead for you to keep you on top of the things that happen in your life, but that's just the first step. The platform's unique interface brings your information to you with the ease that only Palm can offer.

-- Run multiple applications at the same time -- Palm's revolutionary webOS
lets you manage multiple activities more effectively than any other
mobile platform today. It lets you keep multiple activities open and
move easily between them like flipping through a deck of cards. You can
rearrange items simply by dragging them; when you are done with
something, just throw it away by flicking it off the top of the
screen.(3)

-- Information at your fingertips -- Finding what you need is easy with
universal search -- as you type what you're looking for, webOS narrows
your search and offers results from both your device and the web.(4)

-- Intuitive and unobtrusive notifications -- When important things come up
or new updates arrive, you'll receive notifications with a diplomacy
that's a radical departure from other mobile platforms. For example, if
you receive a text message or email, a scrolling notifications bar at
the bottom of your screen lets you address it right away or leave until
later. webOS alerts are one step ahead, ensuring that you never miss a
thing, but never lose your place or train of thought.

What is it?
The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Rachael is a forthcoming smartphone from SE, powered by Google's Android operating system (!) and a processor that's considered gaudily powerful at this stage of the smartphone game in Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon.

It comes bearing a 3.5 headphone jack, graphics acceleration, and a colossally-large (purported) 4-inch touchscreen that should accomodate even the fattest of fingers.

I love to get overzealous about this shit, but barring any major fuckups from Sony Ericsson (which will very likely occur!) the XPERIA Rachael is my near-perfect smartphone and an easy pick for 2009 device of the year.

SPECS IN PRO/CON FORM
+ Google's Android operating system
+ Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon processor @ 1GHz
+ 4-inch touchscreen (we're assuming capacitive, but it hasn't been confirmed yet)
+ 852 x 480 pixel resolution (the highest we've seen for an Android phone)
+ True 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio
+ Graphics acceleration
+ Badass Sony Ericsson UI customizations for Android; see video below
+ 3.5mm headphone jack
+ miniUSB instead of some weirdshit Sony plug
+ 8.1 megapixel camera with autofocus
+ 3G with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, and GPS, naturally. ;-*

- Camera is lacking lenscover, lacking a flash of any kind, and likely will have crappy cramped optics relative to SE's more "camera-centric" models
- Based on SE's track record this thing will cost a million fucking dollars at launch so you'll have to lay low to get a good deal
- No hard keyboard (or announced alternate model with keyboard), if you're still into those
- Since it's non-HTC, we'll probably miss out on the XDA community's support to keep the product fresh for a long time with the latest features (though HTC did build the XPERIA X1 for Sony Ericsson, so maybe)

enough with all the words, what does this shit look like in action

Even the Android-hating Jesus Diaz over at Gizmodo is impressed.

looks pretty cool but what's this Snapdragon thing you won't shut up about
Qualcomm's Snapdragon is the king of cellphone-sized processors for the moment. It runs at 1 GHz which is pretty much unheard of for these CPUs. More megahertz doesn't always mean more better, but it's generally held pretty true for smartphones. Most of HTC's current shit (Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Magic, Dream) runs on a Qualcomm chip @ 528 MHz, the iPhone 3G runs on a Samsung chip @ 412 MHz, the super-speedy iPhone 3G S runs on a 600 MHz chip, and Nokia's smartphones tend to run the gamut from 369 MHz to 424 MHz in the underwhelming N97.

For a point of reference, take a look at what Snapdragon and graphics acceleration have done for the steaming shitpile that is WinMo over in Japan. Imagine this on a modern OS like Android and you can see where the excitement comes from.

how do americans use this jesusphone!!!
The phone will obviously work just fine on T-Mobile and AT&T's 2G networks (voice/SMS/EDGE data) but the pertinent question is 3G support. We don't have a formal announcement yet, but Sony Ericsson has a very good track record for AT&T customers: the Aino, Idou, W995a, C905a, XPERIA X1, and K850 all had support for AT&T's 3G data network and are all sold unlocked and compatible with AT&T's $15/month data option. We can confidently assume this will be, too.

T-Mobile UMTS/HSDPA support is unlikely since T-Mobile's 3G is on a "proprietary" frequency. SE may hook T-Mo customers up, but it doesn't seem likely.

you love ericsson, you hate sony. can I stop havin' a worthless featureset, stop havin' a worthless cellphone?
It looks like SE has gotten serious about competing and really dialed back the Sony-influenced connectivity ridiculousness. The phone charges and syncs with a standard miniUSB cable just like all recent HTCs/Motos/others, and has a standard headphone jack so you don't have to buy some shitty adapter or convince yourself that you're deaf and A2DP sounds good.

Recent SE phones haven given up the ghost on that shithead Sony memory card format and use microSD, we assume the XPERIA Rachael will too.

blah blah iphone iphone blah blah, IS THIS AN IPHONE KILLER????
I hate people.

It stacks up very favorably against the iPhone. The Rachael has a larger screen and a much larger resolution, and I personally prefer Android over iPhone OS just for the wonderful push Gmail experience with a PC-like conversation threading view. On paper it looks faster than the 3GS, but it may end up performing about the same in practice: it's going to be pushing a lot more pixels with that extra horsepower. Sony's UI additions to Android may or may not be any good, but hopefully we can disable them and just use a "stock" Android experience if they're shitty.

That said, the iPhone has a lot of immediate perks. iPhone OS has a ton of apps available, and at least some of them are good! Android has some cool choices too, but the selection's just not there yet and the gaming choices are shit by comparison. I joked about it in another thread, but a stupid addictive arcade homerun derby game is keeping me hopelessly glued to my iPhone right now and it's going to be a bummer if we don't have any fun 3D games for this phone. The iPhone also packs a great Skype client, gapless audio playback, and a tough-to-scratch glass touchscreen which are huge perks for me personally.

Still, it's a chicken and egg type of problem. Android needs more apps to get more devices and marketshare, but nobody's writing apps because of the limited marketshare and previously shit devices. An attractive phone without those ugly-ass HTC "chins" could boost the perception of the platform, and a blazing fast processor with graphics acceleration will give developers some meat to work with.

The phone will also save your $360 per two years over an iPhone because of AT&T's forced iPhone premium data pricing. That won't do us enough good if SE fucks us around and tries to sell this thing for $950 or some shit, though.
