Ok time for my LATE LATE LATE review (as usual). Arrived at the Kool Haus at 10:00 with tomEboy, Dan (my Bro), q-tip (Brent), vickyvale (Ang). Got inside and i must say i really liked the setup! Love the stage location, only thing i didnt like was the blinding spotlights directly positioned into the crowd.

Deko-ze was slammin as usual, totally into his set bouncin around harder than anyone in the crowd. Once the place filled up, the vibe began to get intense and the people started to move to the funky ass tribal/tech-house he was serving up. Great way to open for Mr. Vath, and when he was finished the crowd gave him a well deserved ovation.
Deko-ze = 7/10

Sven came on, and opened up with a twisted high pitched melody that seemed to last for 10 minutes, although it may have just been because i was anticipating his set so much! He didnt dissapoint on this night. Track after track, he amazed me. Perfect mixes, very little effects, and played out his tracks to the fullest. Highlight of his set was that twisted tech-electro track "This...is going...to make you FREAK!!!!" Wow. Did it ever....i dont think ive ever danced so hard in my life (and yes Jon the water did help). My only complaint is that his set didnt go any longer, but judging by the crowd reaction for both sets, this was definately a crowd that was there to see Mauro. Excellent set, but not as good as his set at Sound Emporium last trip to Toronto.
Sven = 9/10

Then, on came Mauro. Wow....the sounds that came out of this guys 4 hours or so of spinning were just mind blowing. Ill admit (like many others have) that his track selection was kind of spotty, one banger, then a filler, then another banger, etc. But holy christ.....the bangers he played KILLLLLLLED me. I dont know where people get off saying his mixing was horrible. I mean, ya we all know he aint a superb mixer, but his productions and bangers made up for whatever he lacked technically. The buildups were just phenomenal and the crowd just ate them up!! The final hour of his set is what got me going again. Just when i thought my energy was spent, he starts throwing on all kinds on goodies. "Seven Nation Army", "New Time, New Place", and definately the best track i heard "DARK ROOM"!!!!!!!! Great request Vince, HOLY FAWK!!!!! Out of the 5 times ive seen Mauro this ranks as the 3rd best performance (right behind GUV 2001, System 2002).
Mauro = 8/10

I hadn't seen Oakenfold since WMC last year and had never been to Guvernment...

I have now decided that NYC clubs suck and I am going to be a TOwhore. I didn't think the club was too packed at all. I liked being able to stand on that balcony close to the DJ booth and watch everyone dance. Everyone was beautiful or funky or super nice. One of the better crowds I have come across in my travels.

As for Oakenfold...damn. He owns me again. No matter how hard I try to ditch this habit, I am addicted to Oakie and that "high" is oh-so-sweet. I loved hearing his remix of Born Slippy. I was surprised by Satisfaction. Anyway, I really felt his mixing was flawless and had a GREAT time. Oakie seemed more mellow. I felt like he was sort of humble. It was weird...like he wasn't doing the GOD POSE.

I left after Oakie to check out Mauro but came back for Mark Oliver later. He really amazed me as well.

You guys are lucky. Such a great venue.

Special thanks to the three hot girls in VIP who ...shared. And, more importantly, much love to the TAs who are, without a doubt, the best people on earth.

/end cheese.

Just like many of you this was my 4th or 5th time i saw oakie. I thought this was the best set by far. Loved his remix of Born Slippy. As far as the people goes it did get annoying at times but the music was so damn good I shortly forgot about it. One thing is for certain I was glad I was sober for this party. I wouldn't have good time high with that people many there.

PAUL IS BACK!

So I'm standing on the stage so I can see into the DJ booth. I'm holding both my souther sun and hypnotized record sleeves in the air hoping Paul catches a glimpse of me.

He looks over on the stage and see's me hopping up and down like a mad-man and he points and starts hopping too. Bingo he saw me.

Next time he looks over I hold up my record and a sharpie and make the signature motion on the record.

Paul nods, and motions for me the frisbee the sleeve up into the booth. I'm about 15 feet away and on the very edge of the stage - but wanting to finally complete my "favorite DJ autograph" collection I do a practise motion and then on the second go let the sleeve go.

It twirled up, into the booth and over Paul's head. Paul jumps and runs after it. Paul is out of sight.

15 seconds later Paul re-appears, smiles, points at me and then flings the sleeve back down at me. On the edge of the stage I reach out and snag it out of the air before anybody else gets a chance to run away with it!

Holding the autographed (Oakenfold, with smily in the O) sleeve above my head I again jump up and down like a mad man and bow "thank you" to Paul - he waves and gets back into his Mix.

FRIGGIN' AWESOME!!!! Thanks Paul!

Up until that point my night had been hectic to say the least. Once I got it signed I danced my ass off and then tried to swim back into the Orange room to catch the last part of Vath.

BTW - I swear I heard loveless.

And what I find funny R.J, is that I id'd two god damn songs and wasnt there. Yet you falsely ID'd one and was there. LOL

Cheers!

Whoah! No kidding. Here's the drama ass I went through to get the wristband.

- I called Guv and asked which line I should get into to buy the wristband. Girl says "KH - tickets will be sold at the Orange room entrance at 11pm.
- I get in line at KH at 9:15. First in line w/ Sgt. Foo and friend. Wait until 10:15 to finally get up to buy my ticket.
- Give ticket girl $40 and ask for wristband as well (just to see if I could get one). She says "no wristbands will be sold in KH. You gotta go into the Guv". I say "crap. The Guv line is around the block - I've been here for an hour". She says "sorry, can't help you".
- I go to ID checker guy in the guv line and explain the situation. He says "too bad, go to the back of the line" - the line is probably 300 people long.
- Being the quick thinking guy that I am - I go about 20 people back from the front and explain my situation and some nice dooder named Greg lets me go in front of him.
- I pay the ticket girl in Guv my $15 and ask "where do I get a wristband" she says "orange room". It is now 10:25.
- So now in the Guv - alone - I go to orange room. It is closed. I ask the bouncer guy guarding the door "when can I get a wristband". He says "12:00". I think "shit".
- So I've got 1.5 hours to burn in the Guv by myself. So I get a stamp and head upstairs and figure I'll chill away from the crowd for a bit.
- I talk to some people also waiting not realizing they are Julia (Sexy Persian) and BF.
- 11:30 comes along and I figure I should go get in line to get into the orange room. Line is about 3 people long.
- Nat, Graham, Julia and BF arrive chat for a bit - but they got wristbands (thanks to the BEST DJ in toronto - mark o). They leave to try and wing their way into KH.
- 12:00 comes - orange room still closed - line is now about 70 people long - surrounding the bar under the balcony.
- 12:30 comes - no open orange room. People start to push, shove and get angry. I feel screwed and am questioning even going to get the wristband.
- 12:45 the finally open the orange room - stampeed of people rush towards the KH doors. Bouncers say "not open yet, wait in line".
- I wait for another 5 minutes, get my wristband and then finally find the rest of the TAs in KH.

Bottom line: poor people movement plans, nobody who worked at KH had a clue what was going on and it wasn't communicated effectively to the patrons. Charles - maybe next time post the process on the website, and then follow through as per plan.

At this point I was frustrated, in a crappy mood and uninterested. Luckily my mood quickly changed when about 1 hour later I got Oakie's autograph.

Pretty much enough. I think my collection is pretty much complete. whoot!

Posted by rabbitjoker on Nov-25-2003 04:50:

My OFFICIAL review

Here is my official review (and I'll make it quick):

Dekoze - Mofo! I missed it. But it was good chatting with you on stage for a while. You're a class act!

Sven Vath - I was have trouble getting into his sound when I first got into KH. Maybe it was my crappy mood from the wristband thing or perhaps it was just that I had never quite heard his type of sound before in a club. Not to say it wasn't interesting - I was just having trouble moving to it (too slow perhaps around 1am??). I went off to Oakie - then headed back with about 30 minutes left in Sven's set. It seemed to me while I was away @ Oakie - Sven flipped a switch, becuase I was really enjoying the toons he was playing. Sven's last half hour was awesome! So - first bit of Sven: 6/10, last 30 minutes of Sven: 8/10.

Mauro - For some reason he has never been as good as the time I saw him last year around this time @ SystemS. But at least I figured Mauro out: Mauro goes between moments of brilliance and moment of boring - not much inbetween. Every time I was about to bust out in moves - Mauro decided to take a smoke and chill. Oh well - at least now that I figured him out I won't expect anything different. Mauro score: 6/10.

The TAs that were present were wikkid! Probably one of the best TA crowds ever!

----

Unrelated note: shit I was blabbin' like a buffoon. Sorry for yappin' so much - but Mauro's music wasn't exactly inspiring me to dance - so I had to do something. Same goes for apres-party - yap yap yap I go.... Arnold lubs you!

Jon Jon - next time lets bring lawn chairs so we don't have to sit on j cloths. wah ha ha!

And cheers to the 4:30am crew! Lets make that a tradition!

Apologies to everyone for not posting my pics last nite. There's a reason:

Came home last nite to see my modem doing something very wierd... Called Rogers. This is what went down:

Even I can be banned from something much larger than a message board...

Rogers suspended my service for a week (with no refund to my account, mind u), cuz apparently some virus has been sending off spam emails from my computer. They sent me some warning to my Rogers acct (which I never check), & since I didn't fix the problem, they've suspended me. We just installed antivirus software to the computer the other day too, and for some reason, it won't even work now (some virus probably has inabled it too). So they won't allow me back online til this Sunday, & if the problem is fixed. There's no way they can un-do the suspension either, and if it happens again, I get suspended for a month! Assholes.

So, that means I can only check my email from work, and I won't be on any IM programs. I'll miss u all. Thank gawd for the phone.

I've sized down the pics, but dunno how I'll get them to Beh now. Hopefully I can solve this issue from work today.

hey nat, with so many of us into computers on the board, i'm sure there's someone who can help you with your virus problem & preventing further ones from occuring. everyone should have access to full functionality of their computer and the net.

next time i'm in TO, i can fix it for ya, if no one gets to it b4 me that is

i'd come over and fix it for you no problem

Thanks babe. My buddy who set up my computer (I work w/him too) is sooooo swamped with his tests at school (til Dec 10!), that he doesn't even have the time to fix it. All he wants to do is reformat it, but uploading all the programs again will take a lotta time too.

What a nice 'welcome to the world of PC's" this has been....

I'll have to whine so much he'll finally break down & do it.
