Websta:- C-Seven is the venue. It's near bridge street (near tank).

Wax...thing with so many people willing to help. The more heads in it to a certain point will be good, but having too many partners will make it impossible to get anywhere, as every1 has the same goal, but will have their own ideas and approaches of getting there. This would also have to be a registered buisness, so everyone's going to be in a partnership, sharing a bank account etc, which may or may not be an issue......

Not detering anyone, just trying to keep this balanced.

I'd hate to see 300 people in there. It certianly doesn't look 1/2 the size of the dendy. And it's max license is 600.

On the topic of venues - whatever happened to Zen/Candy's apartment/china white/....... ??? Ive always considered Zen one of my favourite venues, and i belive its capacity was around the 300-400 mark.... i often thought this might be a good venue for Halcyon if the boys decided to move from Gas...... but whats happened to it??? Is it still operating as Candy's apartment??? is it still owned/run by the same people that owned it when it was Zen??? (if so i say we DEFINITELY do not go near it!)...

We had 320 people turn up to Icebox in January (Which was awesome). I believe it would max out around 380. Note this is not all 380 in the club at one time. This is a rotating crowd. As in people come and go e.t.c.

I think about 250 would be the absolute maximum in the club at any one time. That would be quite uncomfortable though

Therefore the club capacity is max 250(or perhaps less).

U could have a rotating crowd of over 1000 a night, if each DJ brough over 250 guest with them.

Nice one Stama!

I think a meeting could be on the cards. The two-three things that have been thrown around is/are Marketing, our own club night, and sponsorship. All those issues are time consuming.

The original issue, was/is
"Why does Sydney suck so much for trance!" (SIC). It appears everyone's now on board for starting their own night. With no fresh ideas on here to attract a new crowd. Seems quite funny.

Caveat Emptor is the phrase coming to my mind (even tho it's not exactly correct).

Of course I'm keen for any meeting

so what are the gays doing right to fill a venue playing trance music? do more gays like trance than straights or geeks??... & whats this new venue that has booked the Thrillseekers over easter??? (sorry me cant remember the name, but i'll find out sOOn) ..... & whatever happened to China White (ha ha, that brings back some memories!!)... does Mangler need to relocate to Sydney & share your confusion?? ... either that or send Wade down here, we have tables for him to hold up & flyering to do!!

The move was good in the short term (the first couple of parties there were massive!!), but in the long term it couldn't be sustained.

that is a good point you make about sustainablity, is one thing to have a one off night going well but to have a club full every week is another thing ...

I don't think 'the gays' necessarily like trance more than you or anybody else, but because certain gay orientated trance DJ's have such influence in the Sydney dance scene (as far as I know) they are able to fill a venue easily, by marketing, word of mouth (etc) and screw the masses and play whatever the hell they want. Gay parties are all about dance, & you get certain DJs that play trance at them, and yer, i guess it seems then that gay people seem to like trance more than the very broad straight dance scene that has to cater for so many different tastes.

Take Ruby for example (rubydance.com.au )he is always good for trance, but only does play at gay venues and it is understandable that most trance addicts wouldn't want to go to a gay venue, which is fair enough!
I went to the Ruby party last night in a last minute decision and was totally blown away by the quality of trance he was playing. Everything from uplifting, vocal and hardcore towards the end, enhanced by about 4 or 5 Oracle lasers spinning throughout the night, crystal clear sound and amazing lighting n effects. And no one even tried to grab my arse, just picked a quiet spot on the floor and danced for friggin hours.
But yeh other than going to that, Sydney does indeed suck for trance. Move to Toronto, I am.

Posted by Dr P on Feb-29-2004 02:26:

why wouldn't people want to go to gay parties? If the music is good... it doesn't matter really. Or are trance people narrow minded?

Posted by A.J. on Feb-29-2004 11:14:

This is a bit off-topic, but where can you go in Sydney to hear some good uplifting trance?

Flame me if you want, i admit i am a noob, but I had my first 'proper' clubbing experience on Friday night, not some sucky RnB club (and it was awesome), and I am dying to go out more....

I just want some people to let me know where to go, that's all.

PM too if you want

Cheers,

AJ

I don't mind going out on a 'gay' night, however the few times I have done this it has turned out very bad and I have felt VERY uncomfortable. I think it would be fine if it was 1/2 and 1/2.

I am interested in meeting about this issue, I have some ideas and am interested in hearing more discussions on this!

Posted by helix on Feb-29-2004 11:38:

i wonder whether some people in this thread are just wanting BIG trance parties. If trance isn't well supported, would pay for those who are into it to run small local nights. It might gradually build up a scene, but even if not, it would at least allow you to hear the music you love.

I would rather enjoy playing to 50 people who are into it regularly (say once a month). Numbers don't matter. If they do, I have to ask whether it's the music you're into or more 'the scene'. Nothing wrong with that, just a question, that's all.

I've learned from hard experience to start small and grow slowly.

All genres go up and down, maybe Sydney just doesn't get it at the moment. Trance (of all varieties) is still probably the single most popular dance music genre in the world, although possible hard house is overtaking it :/

my 2c as a little kiwi trance DJ, running a small occasional trance night here. (Fluid, 200 people a night, which is small by Sydney standards, but at least they're all up-for-it trance bunnies).

Well Mark Dynamix basically spins prog house these days....

I think with the gay parties its not so much about the music as it is about the brand. People know the Ruby brand in the same way as say Transmission or Godskitchen, so their nights will always be reasonably packed because people go "oh, it's a ____ party, it'll be good."

And I think Arq is one of the handful of clubs in Sydney that will pull a residual crowd, ie the people who say "lets go to ____" regardless of what's actually on that night. Home, Gas, Chinese Laundry, maybe Tank and Arq are the few places that have this effect....
