dude i have a comment as for pvd shitting on NY. i also agree that the paul van dyk in twilo was on another level, but that was because of a combination of things, and the fact that to this day, no DJ can create the same atmosphere in New York that they might have done regularly at twilo. that is because of how good twilo was as a club from its lights to its sound to its massive dance floor to its C02 tank. not to mention, some of the best crowds in new york that were twilo patrons.

having said that, i dont think it is fair to say paul shits on his new york gigs. ive seen him at random spots around the US such as in ohio and dc or boston where his gigs are short and "trademarked", his new york sets offer so much more. the diversity, the fact that he plays unusual songs... songs he has put aside for years, songs he never plays at normal club nights, unreleased tracks, tracks like the spell that ive never heard anywhere else.... i think this is something special, the fact that he keeps his 6 hour arrangement in new york alone is really something special. the fact is, yeah miami is hot, especially during wmc... but if you want to talk about north america, new york is his MOST DEDICATED event and is still on a level above other places. that is my personal feeling and why i always come to new york for his gigs no matter where i am.

heh. actually i heard him mix 2 tracks which reminds me of solid sleep intro, but this was THATS LIFE RMX :P they have the same closed hat!

his marco v i feel you remix has a similar beginning to club attack too!

I saw a small one go up from the crowd at the middle of his set and a big one at the end.

There are no crasher kids anymore. Cyber is dead.

andreas and i missed this "bass in your face" feeling the whole night. we would give him a B- .

Got back to Germany this morning and went straight to work, urgh. Now home, no time yet to read this entire thread, so here are just my 2 cents:

I agree with ShellShock, I missed the flow in the set. Same problem as 2 weeks ago at Casino in Berlin. Therefore, both sets didn't really catch me. That's too bad as he did change them dramatically from, say, the latter half of 2003, as rubyriva pointed out. That in itself is a big positive, but I kinda got the feeling that he hasn't really figured out the new tracks in his virtual record case to build as smooth a set as we are used to.

Of course Face to Face, one of my all time faves, rocked and so did For an Angel as the closing track. THOSE tracks cannot be overplayed, if you know what I mean.

As for the sound, it sucked, relatively speaking. The Phazon was clearly not up to its own standards and fell way behind it stellar performance last Novemer. I noticed that immediately as I walked in, that's how bad it was. But then again, it totally didn't compare to horrendous system at Avalon the next night at Ferry's show, one of the worst I've ever had my ears hurt.

And last but not least, Edgar V's opening set: sucked ass, the worst PvD@Roxy opening ever, even worse than the horrible Luis Diaz opening a couple of gigs ago. WTF was he thinking?

Great running into a lot of people, sorry I wasn't able to hang out with you, I was with my own crowd of 20+ people.

See ya all in Miami

P.S.
Didn't see a gatecrasher flag, only 2 different Berlin flags, small and large. Do you maybe mean those?

yeah i'm posting a bit late but i had an AMAZING time. paul played such a good set, probably better than the last two he played at roxy. i enjoyed myself so much, i never wanted to leave the dance floor. the way they had the booth set up was really cool too, you were able to get so close. omgihadsomuchfun. it was great seeing everyone too. WOOOOO

Posted by Aya Brea on Mar-01-2004 19:31:

btw, anyone have photos from the night?

KarateKid HE KILLED IT !!!!!!!!!

Paul van Dyk Killed it... In my opinion ... seems like nowadays you can't have an opinion in here. It's a forum. You can vent what you want, and you should be allowed too. Everyone goes to see Paul van Dyk for a different reason. Some for the music, some for the atmosphere, some for the partying, etc. . . So everyone is going to have a different opinion of the night and she be allowed to voice one. Just something that has really irked me reading threads as of late.

Anyways, on to more pressing issues ...

HE PLAYED TILLMAN UHRMACHER - ON THE RUN !!!! (ocean to shore mix) !!

A highlight of my night being it's one of my fave. all time songs (Folks, once again, just an opinion)! Paul is just an amazing dj. His energy was on point all night. And although I agree with some, that there was a certain lack of progression or understanding to his mix, he still had me moving ALL FREAGIN NIGHT LONG!! And that encore ?? I mean, I know we've all have heard all of his songs a milion times, but theres nothing like hearing it in the Roxy, and with Paul dropping it. C'mon, it was sick !!! Definitely made me smile from ear to ear .. especially when they had the lights on and turned them back off....

All and all, what a great night. I hope everyone found what they were looking for ... cause I sure know, I did. Hope everyone is recovering nicely from the lack of sleep.

ok paul dropped autumn tactics, end of story .

Deep river runs its course
To the warm horizon
Shadows of falling leaves
October moon and rusty skies
Everchanging feelings
The seeds of autumn in my mind

Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Feels like it's just begun
Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Waiting for summer sun

Hiding summer's age no more
No more leaves in summer sky
Turning dark on empty carlots(?)
When summer was my only friend
Sail back this way again
Winter's one breath away
Sail back this way again
Winter's one breath away
It's turning cold...

Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Feels like its just begun
Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Waiting for summer sun

Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Feels like its just begun
Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Waiting for summer sun

Hiding sun, like the hiding sun
Feels like its just begun (t.nu)

Did you ever notice back in the Twilo days, the crowd was more diverse? The last time I went to see Paul at Roxy, mid 2003, the crowd seemed to be all noobs. The average age seemed to be 18. Also... Paul seems to jump around to much in his sound selection. It's not the way he used to play. It's too much experimenting in different genres, like his Soundgarden show. Not my cup of tea anymore... and the repeating of tracks has to stop. What a joke.... seems like he isn't really into it anymore, just out for the Benjamins.

mmmm. must say it was wicked fun!!! one of the best trips i have had in a while !

funniest part was when we get exit the airport terminal and mr v and i just look at each other and say: "so fuckin cold." lol! he he he.

edgar's set was marvellous! great funky tribal and some amazing breaks! people really liked it which made us really happy!

paul's set... now this was banging. really hard and driving. set tempo was around 143-144 bpms. began trancey then went off with tech-trance and techno, which was great. everyone was having a great time! slowed down for a bit and then carried on till the end (climax)

can't wait for friday,,, hopefully will be a dejavu!

all the best!

Hey Arturo, remember me, Karl, I came up to ya - reminded you about the lovely pic you took of me with NuNRG? Anywho - was good seeing you. BTW - I must comment on Edgar V - he's by far the most down-to-earth kinda guy. He doesn't seem to have the superstar ego about him, even though I think he deserves it. Are you guys friends or somth? Also, I didn't realize you were from Miami - how do you manage to catch PvD at every gig? and last nosy questiion - I saw you tapping your fingers like you were playing a synth - do you actually play/produce or you are just a wishfull thinker like most of us?

BTW, I think that playing an air piano should be just as highly regarded as jamming on an air guitar.

Later, mate!

I completely agree with you. That was the song of the night for me! Why isn't it considered one of the greatest trance songs ever made???
It's like listening to the sunset...
