My desk actually looks pretty boring right now. We've just moved to a temporary location(while they are renovating another building and making it "engineer friendly" - see pictures above).

P.S. Did you ever see the pics from NYC? Mine are up on my MSN space (click website under my name)

Also...Cale and I came across a book that you worked on off of Google the other day!

No no no Lisa, not a book that he worked on, just the Google Book Search, which is what he works on.

Google Romance is a place where you can post all types of romantic information and, using our Soulmate Search, see search results that could, in theory, include the love of your life. Google Inc. and its partner EarthLink were chosen by San Francisco Wednesday to blanket the city with affordable wireless Internet access, beating out five other bidders for a chance at the highly coveted contract.

San Francisco will start negotiating a deal with the two companies, following a recommendation by a city panel evaluating the project.

The decision by San Francisco brings the prospect of free wireless Internet access for residents one step closer to reality. If completed, virtually everyone within the city limits will be able to get online -- provided they have a compatible computer -- whether at home, in a park or at work.

"I am still hopeful, and maybe I'm a cockeyed optimist, that we can finish this year," said Chris Vein, executive director of San Francisco's technology department.

In choosing to negotiate with the Google-EarthLink team, the city is going with two Internet giants with household names. Both firms have deep pockets and proven track records online, but only limited experience building a large wireless network.

The project, championed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, is intended to boost the city's technology credentials and help bridge the digital divide between the Internet haves and have-nots. It has also generated intense interest from other cities looking to build similar networks.

Chronicle staff writer Rachel Gordon contributed to this report.

Goodbye, iCal.

Posted by Orko on Apr-13-2006 14:50:

I just saw that you can import your calendar from outlook, which is very helpful, but i wish you could sync too.

i guess that will be different feature to add.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Apr-13-2006 15:22:

Meh, I like Rainlndar more because I can stick that thing on my desktop. If Google could import from Rainlendar, then we'd be talking, although I'd still only use GoogleCalendar as a backup.

Google Audio calls for talent
Posted by Garett Rogers @ 9:16 pm

While browsing through the jobs at Google I stumbled across something new postings targeted at future "Google Audio" employees. Some of the positions they are looking to fill are: Customer Support Technician, Senior Sales Technical Support, Provisioning Manager, Media Account Manager, Business Analyst, Account Executive.

What could "Google Audio" be though? Maybe it will be the music search/store offering that has been heavily speculated about recently. In a move that could add some truth to these rumors, Google held a meeting that only top music industry executives were invited to attend on March 30th. Google Audio could very well be the product name for this future service.

It could also be the name for an audio version of AdWords. It's not a matter of if Google will launch this service, but when they already own the technology through the recent acquisition of dMarc Broadcasting. It will be interesting to see how successful radio advertising will be considering the slow response to Google's Publication Ads experiment.

Cool Google Calendar is great.

I LOVE GOOGLE CALENDAR!

I use it ALL THE TIME now!

It's wonderful!

I know many of the other online calendars were and are still phenomenal... and even better in terms of ease of use, etc...

But its the close integration and association to Gmail that makes this so fucking handy beyond belief for me!

Just so easy to add things to it from your email and to switch to it!
I like the Agenda feature, and the custom date period (mine's set to 3 weeks). I'm using this like I wouldn't believe!

No longer even keeping my Outlook up to date. Google Calendar for the future for me.

I cant wait till they set up Holidays to appear on it. I'd also love to see them make it so that when you click on a calendar event/appointment, it'll show more than just the name, and location and the "more details" link. Having it eventually displaying any notes you have entered when you click on the event would be ^5 (avoiding having to click on "more details" first to see what notes you've made).

So much potential IMO. I love it. That's my verdict.

http://code.google.com/soc/

If you haven't heard of this: the Google Summer of Code is a yearly event where Google will sponsor you to work for an open-source project, doing something useful: fixing bugs, adding features, whatever. You write up a proposal and submit it to Google, who will pass it along to the mentors associated with your chosen project; if they accept it, Google gives you $4500 and 3 months to implement. Perhaps more importantly, though, you'll get a nifty t-shirt.

The requirements: You must be 18+, and be enrolled in some sort of accredited higher educational institute.

Note that they just opened this year's site on Apr. 14, and are not yet accepting applications; you've still got time to decide.

I have all my calendar "categories" set up now... ex:

General, Birthdays, Holidays, CGA, Tennis, Toronto, Work, etc.

I love it... makes things immediately stand out based on their colour that you've associated w/ that group/category.

Plus makes the calendar appear more lively w/ a multitude of colours (and its nice the colours serve a real function too... and are not just for show!)

The "Description" part of events is so handy! I have so many related thoughts and notes stored in things Ive marked down on my calendar! And I like the function to be able to set up multiple users in your calendar, and the ability to publish it online... (not that Im using that feature... _yet_) and its so easy to decide whuts shared or private depending on what you wish to actually have disclosed

Honestly - such a Google Calendar fan! Its wonderful

I recommend everyone try it

Google Q1 financial highlights

quote:
Google Q1 financial highlights
Posted by Garett Rogers @ 1:19 pm

Here are some of the highlights from the 2006 Earnings Report PDF and press release on Google's website. It looks as though Google has had a great first quarter with revenues up and in some cases by almost double from a year ago.

quote:
Revenues - Google reported revenues of $2.25 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2006, representing a 79% increase over first quarter 2005 revenues of $1.26 billion, and a 17% increase over fourth quarter 2005 revenues of $1.92 billion. Google reports its revenues, consistent with GAAP, on a gross basis without deducting traffic acquisition costs, or TAC.

Google Sites Revenues - Google-owned sites generated revenues of $1.30 billion, or 58% of total revenues. This represents a 97% increase over first quarter 2005 revenues of $657 million and an 18% increase over fourth quarter 2005 revenues of $1.10 billion.

Google Network Revenues - Google's partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $928 million, or 41% of total revenues. This is a 59% increase over network revenues of $584 million generated in the first quarter of 2005 and a 16% increase over fourth quarter 2005 revenues of $799 million.

International Revenues - Revenues from outside of the United States contributed 42% of total revenues, compared to 38% in the fourth quarter of 2005 and 39% in the first quarter of 2005. Foreign exchange rates had an immaterial impact on sequential international revenue growth. Had foreign exchange rates remained constant from the first quarter of 2005 through the first quarter of 2006, our international revenues would have been $65 million higher.

"Google had an exceptional quarter with strong growth and profitability, from both Google properties and the network," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. "We are driving this growth through investments in our infrastructure and our people, product innovations that attract new users, and relationships with advertisers and partners around the world. The strength of our business model gives us the opportunity to invest in our business, allowing us to maintain and grow our market leadership."
