Justine Henin-Hardenne comes to the net a good deal as well now. Its a riskier, tricky form to tennis to develop, but can be unbelievably effective, if the skills get developed.

You're so right Jem. Serve & volley is almost gone.
But if u can do it well aka Sampras, Navratilova, McEnroe its almost impossible to beat.
I SOOOO want Federer to do it more often cause it puts SO much pressure on the opponent - they constantly have to make great passing shots just to have a chance.
But it is a craft that is VERY VERY difficult.....

Roddick vs Federer: Roddick's at his best since he fired Gilbert.
I cant believe how well he is playing. Having said that he is my most disliked player on the ATP tour. But he's so composed now.
He has a legitimate chance. But i'm staying with Federer cause i LOVE 'em, in 5.

Women:
Sharapova vs Clijsters: This is a guaranteed GREAT match. SO close.
But staying with pre-tourney prediction...Clijsters, barely in 3.

Serena vs Vaidisova: Really like Vaidisova's game, and only 17. Great future, no doubt. But this is SERENA. Hate 'er, but DAMN she's good...refuses to lose. And so much experience.
Serena in 3. Vaidisova is a yr away from being top 5.

One last note: ANYTHING PLZ, whatever it takes, i cant watch
Serena win another Slam. Her arrogance disgusts me, SO American

EDIT: WOW #10 Fernando Gonzalez JUST beat #2 Nadal in straight sets!
This really is a surprise to me.
Sets up #10 vs #12 Tommy Haas in the semis.
Both had HUGE wins in the quarters, making this semi WAY too tuff to call.
Good on Gonzalez tho

Is TA being SPAMed again? WTF mate?

Gotta say I was ver disappointed to see Kim knocked out Hingis, but not surprised, although after the first set I didnt really get my hopes up.

Im with you on no.10 Gonzalez, he's been the player I didnt realy know or follow coming into this tournment thats reall got my attention, much like Baghdatis did last year! I'm really impressed w/ his game. Hes a great player to watch too, he fights, baby!

I agree, i dont think Serena is gonna have an easy time winning over Vaidisova, but I think she'll do it, as you said, its Serena and she plays the big points WELL. It usually takes an experience player to dominate her in big point situations. Serena is one of those fierce competitors that just almost ALWAYS steps it up when she damn well needs to (and badly!)

I love Vaidisova, just like w/ Sharapova... shes only 17 and showing SO MUCH promise! An excellent player to keep an eye on here, yes.

And I agree Roddick is at his peak since leaving Gilbert. And I'm actually shocked too at how composed he is.
But unlike Serena, I dont hate Roddick. I never know where he stands in my top 5, but he seems to constantly fluctuate with me, but i still enjoy watching him. I love seeing this knew Roddick.
Only 4 unforced errors in a whole bloody set...who knew he was capable! I sure as shite didnt up until now!

Yea, there are some great games coming ahead now. I love Hingis but kinda wanted Clijsters to win just because she has been soo close to winning the cup and never made it. Plus isnt this her last final appearance???

I have yet to see Gonzalez play so I have no idea about his game. I feel bad bad for Nadal though. But overall, Federer vs. Roddick seems to be promising but history has been with Federer so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed. Fuck, this is time I tend to miss the older tennis when we had knockout games like Agassi vs. Sampras, man they were so not one sided, lol. I haven't really been following Australian open, just wanted to know how did Blake and Nalbandian do???

Thumbs up

Gonzalez is a gun! What a sick match!

I love Tommy Haas but I'll be happy if Gonzalez wins!

Volley, yes. Serve, hardly. I don't even know how you can say that serve is almost gone considering the amount of players that have their serve as their main advantage.

No no, you misinterpreted him. "Serve and volley" is referred to a practice in whole. Serving, then coming in and volleying.

The "serve and volley" game is all but gone is what he meant. Not that individually serving is gone (ie. big serves as you read it) or volleying is gone.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Jan-24-2007 22:03:

Ahhh, my mistake. Then I agree. I think it's harder now because of two things:

A) Serves are much faster now, and the returns come back faster too. Coming up to the net after a serve will not give you enough time to set up your volley. Hell, by the time you get to the net the ball will already be at the baseline of your court.

B) As a result of A, players adapted their game so that their baseline accuracy is much greater, even with really powerful hits. So someone coming up to the net after the serve is suiciding themselves a point because their opponent will have no trouble sending a 100-mph shot down the sideline, making it practically impossible to return it, much less get a winner with a volley.

Not to mention, a volley doesn't leave much room for error, you fuck up your volley, and the ball with either be out, or you'll lob it way up, making for an easy winner for your opponent.

So um.... does anyone have any copies of those many upskirt and shower pix taken at the open? They just arrested a third guy today.

On your last point, oh yea. So true, hence the other reason why ppl avoid it. Its a damn hard skill to perfect well and if you dont do it right, then you for sure will lose that point.

Interesting point with B). I never looked or thought about it like that before, that the accuracy with which players will hit returns will have gotten better (making for more winners by players from the baseline). Makes sense, thanks for mentioning that.

Agassi was the man for place his shots so excellently from the baseline. It was how he competed so effectively against all the power hitters on the men's side. Amazing, simply amazing and consistent shot making, be them cross court or down-the-line shots.

Hingis places her shots very well too. Because she's able to think and analyse returns so quickly on court, shes really excelled at doing this. And I think she needs to get better, keeping the variety up in her shots in order to really stand a chance to defeat the more powerful top ranked players on the court. The power game really makes it hard for Hingis, and is one reason she chose to take a break from the pro tour 3 years ago (in addition to being plagued by ankle injuries)

I dont even watch tennis, but since my wierd sleep schedule from being sick and staying up to watch Poker after Dark on NBC, I stayed up to watch my fellow Chileno take a win. It was a pretty impressive match for Gonzalez to say the least, but I've seen Nadal play before and it didnt look like him out there. Nadal was frustrated and completely controlled over by Gonzalez. Anyhow this is probably my only contribution to tennis since I rarely watch the shit.

You misunderstood. I would never say the serve is almost gone - i watch a LOT of tennis...

Serve & volley is a strategy, or a style of play.
So i meant them together as a means of playing, not separate as you thought

EDIT Just realized Jem clarified, didnt mean to echo....
thx Jem

I dunno. I think that Vaidisova is doing a pretty good job with keeping Williams on her feet. Williams may start stressing out because she's worried that she will lose (WHICH SHE WILL ) and that will affect her game.

I will bet you $100 (so I have an even $1000) and a kitten (it would be nice to have a kitten as a playmate for the one that Dima owes me) that Sharapova will win.

Okay, but you might have to take care of it for a few months.
