To the Ultra VJs: thanks so much for telling us that Traffic was playing during Tiesto's set. I'm sure it helped the trainspotters.
To the MC: thanks so much for telling us that Tiesto is the #1 DJ in the world -- several times -- and to "make some noise" through the night.
That out of the way, on to my little review:
I arrived late due to lagging travel companions, just after Infected Mushroom finished their set (you could hear them from out front).
I headed straight to the Amphitheater to catch Christopher Lawrence. He was decent, but not up to his usual standard. The mixing was off and something was just... missing. I remember his Ultra 5 set was much more fluid and driving; something just didn't connect as well this time. (I attended Ultra two years ago, when Underworld delivered their mindblowing performance, but unfortunately missed out on 6.)
After Lawrence ended at 4:00 I checked out the rest of the tents before returning to see Ferry at 4:45. I wanted to see Christian Smith during this gap, but the techno tent apparently hit technical difficulties and was empty when I got there.
Ferry played a solid set, though it was a little eccentric. His third track rocked; I'm not sure what it was, but contained a simple lead that just built and built without letting go. What was with the Aqua-esque female vocal "Are you there? Are you there?" Finally heard Cubikated live -- just as massive as I expected. I'm glad he played a bit of techno too, which I was hoping for. As for the closer, sorry System F fans, but I still dislike Out Of The Blue.
Left shortly after Oakenfold started because I just plain don't have faith in the guy anymore. He had the nerve to play Traffic. Come on.
Spent the next hour with Steve Lawler and his chunky, dark house. Nice stuff on the soundsystem, but like most house, I grew bored after an hour or so.
My friends and I eventually found our way back to the Amphitheater for Tiesto. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought his set was rather poor. It wasn't mixed poorly for Tiesto, but the track selection was just so flat. And I cringe over Just Be. To be fair, he played a couple neat tracks, but most of it was rather samey Dutch fluff.
Contrast with Paul van Dyk! As Global Drum Attack started off, you could tell it was time for some serious German work. When the bass finally dropped on Drum Attack the place just ripped apart. The Other Side was fckign fantastic, though I think I prefer the other mix he's been playing, which is a bit more emotional. Independance similarly rocked the place. The whole set was rock solid and very well mixed.
My one complaint: Nothing But You and then Time of out Lives?? I mean seriously, Paul, what the fck? If I had been closer to the stage at that point I might have become violent.
Overall I felt Ultra 7 wasn't nearly as good as Ultra 5. The lineup was thinner and the overall vibe wasn't as strong, though it was still a wonderful event. Maybe this is partially because I arrived late, and partially because the techno tent shut down when I wanted to see it.
And WHERE THE HELL was Second Sun??? Very disappointed not to see them.
ultra was a joke...

let me just say that i was bored up until ferry corsten came on. i think i was run down mostly because i was being burnt by the sun! lol...but anyhow, i'm sorry, but junkie XL did not impress me at all. his last year's set was WAYYYY better!!! oakie was just retarded. but i did enjoy dogzilla and flight 643. Tiesto impressed me...right when tiesto came on was when i really got into the groove. and when PVD came on, let's just say IT'S OVER. his set this year at ultra was HELL of a lot better than last year...i enjoyed his speech too.
tiesto and pvd both did a great job. i took pics and i'll try to post...
