For the competitors of competition 3...

Posted by DJ Mark V on Jun-27-2005 18:27:

Competition 3
Opponent 1

Track Selection and Play Order:
Well if you did anything well, it was selecting good tracks with the potential for a great flowing mix. The play order also went quite nice, the tracks that were selected couldnt have gone any better in that order, great job.

Score: 23

Beat Matching:
This is the area I feel needs the most improvement. I heard at times double bass lines and conflicting beats. The beat matching was not terrible, but it wasnt great. If you improve on this, I think youll do quite well as a DJ. Keep it up.

Score: 18

Transition Harmonics:
Transition 1: Impressive kick off for sure. The transitional harmonics of this mix flowed nicely I felt. The cymbals clicked nicely between tracks which really made it an effective transition.
Transition 2: The second transition did not flow as well as the first one. It felt like the bass lines were competing at some points. It lost some of the melody and harmonics which made the listener try to find the melody and actually music; instead they were stuck with just the beat with a weak bass.
Transition 3: Not too strong of a transition here. It felt like one track melted out and the other melted in. As a DJ I know you what you were trying to aim for in that transition, but not everyone is a DJ. Not too bad overall however.
Transition 4: The harmonics on this transition were just alright, nothing impressive; the transition should have taken place earlier and thats why its hard to keep many of your transitions unnoticeable.
Transition 5: Again, there were competing bass lines, but not terrible. This time the transition came in at a better time.

Overall Transition Harmonic Overview:
The definition of harmonic is:
Pleasing to the ear: harmonic orchestral effects.

With that in mind, I felt that the harmonics of the mix set as a whole were not as solid as they could have been.

Where to Improve:
Bring in the sounds of the track youre trying to bring in before waiting too long for the track youre mixing out of; once youve brought in your sounds, and then proceed with hitting a bass line instead of fighting with two bass lines without any real melody to support it.

Score: 20

Competition 3
Opponent 2

Track Selection and Play Order:
The play order became shaky for a couple of the tracks in the very beginning. The track selection was quite nice, you had some good tunes in there, but the play order was a bit jumbled in the first three or so tracks, I felt that you could have made a wiser choice(s) in track selection to make a better feeling and flow to the mix, but overall not bad at all, the majority was played well.

Score: 21

Beat Matching:
I felt that the beat matching was quite good. You stayed consistent the whole way through the set and proved your beat matching skills were above adequate.

Score: 24

Transition Harmonics:
Transition 1: I was not completely impressed. It did not effectively follow with the melodies of the track you were transitioning into.
Transition 2: Decent overall transition, but did not follow the same melody of the track you were mixing into, although your technique was still quite good.
Transition 3: Im quite good and pointing out transitions, perhaps mainly because Im a DJ myself. I had to take a double take on this transition, it was absolutely enticing! You brought in the tracks sounds perfectly and hit the vocals exactly where they needed to be. Great job, that transition definitely gained you some points.
Transition 4: Also another good transition, it followed the flow of the mix a bit better than the first two transitions and delivered the flow I think you set for in the beginning of the mix.

Overall Transition Harmonic Overview:
The definition of harmonic is:
Pleasing to the ear: harmonic orchestral effects.

With that in mind, the majority of the transitional phases fit nicely, however track selection is key to any good mix set, keep that in mind.

Where to Improve:
I enjoyed the tracks you played, but as I said earlier, track selection is what is going to set your mix apart from the other DJ and in this case that was what probably hurt you the most. Selecting good tracks isnt always enough, selection good tracks that flow with one another is. Great job, keep up the good work.

Score: 21

No problem dude. I do this because I know this is what I would want. Most times judges just give you a score with no explanation of why you got it, and I believe that the competitor deserves an explanation of their score, so I hope this helps a bit!

Hey X2!

That's great to hear that you're still enthusiastic and eager, that's always awesome to see. I'm sure you'll do great in your next competition. I know the rushed feeling believe me, so I can most definately relate to what you're saying. But when you do find the time, just relax and let the flow of the music determine what you'll play next, that's the best way.

Keep it up!
Mark

When will results be posted for comp 4?

Posted by djsphere on Jun-28-2005 20:23:

I saw some mixes that included more than 5-6 tracks. I ask people that judge this kind of mixes to disqualify DJs that don't follow the rules from now on. Some of them just don't read the rules so we need to take some action.

Thank you!
