i actually did like plaza too, nice setup there. i like sonar too. i'd say its one of my most fav venues in the city, something about it, dont know, just really like it. viva was great cause it puts you really close to the dj, its a nice intimate setting and there's parking!! would be nice to get commodore sometime too

I hate to kill everybodys good vibe out here but having people on stage in front of the DJs is disrespectful to the audience. The sound was flat out amazing, the visuals where nice but allowing 4 girls that were NOT part of the show to dance front and center in front of BT for 45 minutes isn't acceptable.

(Notice those 3 people blocking the view of several hundred paying customers?)

Security said they were 'BT's friends'. When I approached BT and told him I though it was disrespectful and tacky he said 'what am I supposed to do? -- I'm just trying to work out here' as if he didn't know them. Regardless I think BT needs to take move ownership of the product people have paid for -- his performance.

I really could give a rats ass who knew them. I came to see the DJs and when you have DJs at this level performing there is an expected minimal level of professionalism. Allowing people who are not part of the show to full on block the entire view of the performer for most of the crowd is third rate. Clearly these girls where getting off on the attention as well because there were blowing kisses to the crowd and grinding on each other like there we at a 50 Cent show. It doesn't get much more insulting.

Im not the only one that felt like this. A number of people were flipping them off, yelling at them and complaining to security. Even Jono was rolling his eyes at them.

This is the second show Ive come to Vancouver for and the second time this has happened. Is this the norm in Vancouver club culture? Does the paying audience take a back seat to the friends of whomever?

Again sorry for killing the vibe but it needed to be said.

Keith

PS Above and Beyond was incredible.

About the groupies

the one on the far left

Ive uhm, "known" her

But I agree the groupie problem should be addressed, some of these act's are married, and Im sure if they told the groupie to fack off it wouldnt look too good for them

Posted by apri_peel on Jul-24-2005 01:16:

you are absolutely right keith. fck i would prolly tolerate them if they were pretty, but they werent. and their attire was even worse lol. i'm all up for being girly and wearing pretty skirts and dresses but i really wouldnt want hundreds of people see the color of my panties. the 50 cent show is a perfect way to describe those girls. not only were they blocking the view for the audience but they were also right in BT's face. if i were the dj, i'd tell them get the fck out of my view or i'd smack them with my record bag. really glad they were gone for a&b

i saw one guy finger the girls when they were up there, it was hilarious lol

i also got a nice shot of one of the girls, will post it in a bit

not to mention the amount of things the girls were giving BT to sign while he was trying to put on a show, i'm sure he would have done signatures right after he was off. i watched him take almost a minute to have a picture taken with a fan just before he got into plush, i was quite impressed.

those girls should be at plush on a saturday night

Posted by hypronix on Jul-24-2005 01:24:

I doubt it that they were friends of BT's... he's married and recently a father and it strikes me as highly unlikely they were his travel companions.

But yes, I got pretty pissed off that those girls were allowed on stage and I couldn't even go in the back to 30 friggin' seconds to grab a signature from Brian [I had to give it to that guy with the dreads to get it for me, but he was really nice like that ]

Anyway I'm hoping to see more of BT's action at the broadcast.

Cheers!

I'm sure he was the one to enjoy the ladies after the show since I've seen two cabs with BT and Co. leaving... so those groupies might've had some after-party [no 'music' by BT cause he's married and a daddy :P]

Guess I wasn't the only one that thought them transvestites were blocking the view

will it every be possible to go later then three am at any venue in vancouver? just curious

Dunno exactly how that works, but one could apply for an extension of sorts. After the show, I mosied over to the Lotus, where Chloe Harris was laying down some sick beats til almost 4:30am. She's fresh off her Bedrock UK tour and was back last nite to fulfill her quarterly residence in our fair city.

Really really liked the tunes that BT started off his set with. Anyone have any idea what they were??

Was also very happy to see Kyle on the warmup - I didn't see his name on the flyer, so didn't know that he'd be warming with Danny and Jules.

The sound that PH1 brought in was prolly the best that I've heard at Plush. There have been times where I've went and the sound was really 'whoompy' and super distorted at lower levels.

so what's peoples opions on things.... as you may all know we have a really long history @ Sonar, but has done shows recently @ Tokyo/richards/plaza ... what do you guys like to see?

I personally like the smaller shows .. feels alot more intimate.. I really like Richards on Richards tho, and am super excited for the Doc/Kaskade show comin up!

Oh .. can't remember now .. but was the Fruit played twice? Once in the warmup, and once in BT's set?

The infamous 3 girls dancing onstage were invited up onstage by BT's personal manager. There was nothing that anyone could do unless those girls started to techincally interfere with BT's deejaying performance. What you didn't see backstage was that BT's personal manager was on the ball with making sure that this didn't happen, keeping the girls from getting too close to the equipment and random variables getting out of hand.

As the girls danced onstage other members of the audience caught on and tried to jump on stage, they were quickly escorted off by club security before it got out of control.

Stage access was strictly limited to WRISTBANDS only. When you have DJs at this level performing there is an expected minimal level of professionalism and expected security. The least amount of people backstage the better.

I was pretty strict last night when it came to granting access on stage to unauthorized people, especially when we've had problems in the past with theft. If you weren't staff or part of the technical crew, you were turned away. Unless you're carrying a deejay bag or personally with the deejay, you were turned away. I know some friends of mine tried to get backstage but were rudely turned away and I apologize to them now.

Security is there for a reason, if its not present then chaos ensues.

Please understand the reasons for not allowing people backstage:

-Having too many people backstage causes problems and too many random variables
-since there was no secure room accessible to the performers, many things were left in the open
-there was an open bar for the performers left in the open
-too many wires, cables, equipment were left exposed

As for people asking for autographs, please understand that when you have 300 people asking for autographs at one time it gets overwhelming. BT's manager did an excellent job with helping those seeking autographs, but when it starts to interfere with the deejaying performance it becomes a problem. Deejays are people too, so please understand if they need to take a break.

If you have any questions or comments about how problems were handled or should have been handled, send me a private message.

Ive been the guest of a named DJ before so I have an idea how it works. You get FULL the VIP treatment -- they bring you in the back door with the DJ, free drinks all night, security watching over you area, this and that. Honestly it can be a little over the top and I can see it going to peoples heads. But if I tired to block the view or be generally interruptive like those girls were I would expect somebody to step in with a little common sense. Thats what was missing.

Im glad we didn't see BT's manager making sure things were in order. We shouldn't have to. Just like we shouldnt have to put up with all the people interrupting the view. We should be able to just enjoy the show and somebody should take a little ownership of ensuring people are able to do that. Somebody from the event staff should have let BTs manager know that people were complaining and ask him to keep the girls from obstructing the view. If he wants to be a dick about it then fine but at least and effort was made.

Im not going to sit out here and continue bickering back and forth about it. It's pretty clear that this is considered acceptable behavior.

Posted by hypronix on Jul-24-2005 10:24:

I realise there's a need to maintain a certain discipline, obviously, but I know of some people that did get behind to get autographs after BT finished off [and that's exactly the time I'm referring to, not during the set which - yes - I would fine disruptive] without being part of the DJ 'group'.

Anyway I'm happy to just being part of it all and being there to listen to him... all little mishaps aside it was an awesome show [and I loved seeing BT yell "f*ck yeah!" in netween song breaks

Da Froot and other stuff...

To answer a previous question, The Fruit was played twice. I played the Tom Novy Dub earlier but I don't know which mix BT played. In any case, he sliced it up with other bits so that it'd sound completely different aside from the vocal sample.

Regarding the dancin troupe and and security to the backstage area, the people backstage after BT finished were people who were with A&B, myself and people with the show. It just looked packed full of people because the area was a bit small.

I was so jazzed after playing that I didn't end up even drinking much for my bday and turned down drink offers left and right. Managed to even walk out of the club without any assistance! Good stuff all around from everyone involved and I had great time playing on the big sound. The door people got everyone in early which surprised me when I looked up to see a full dancefloor already.

I'll post some pics I took when I get around to it (and no it's not like I'll procrastinate the pics the way my new mix has not been laid down for 4 years and counting).

One final thought was that the vibe the show had was great. Good mix of old and new and seemed less ravey than the normal big Plush party. Maybe the great weather had something to do with it but I saw smiles everywhere.

Julian aka "the other guy"

PS Thanks to everyone to attended, those who caught my set and those who liked what I played but referred to me as 'some other guy!'

Nice. I'll keep it in mind and check it out when I next see it somewhere.

Apri: Nice photos and video. I'll have my photos up at some stage soon, so when they're up I'll post 'em. I've got a fair few videos too, but I dunno whether I can get those hosted. I'll definitely try though.
