So until my sense of rhythm slows to a pace that will allow it I think we're going to be stuck with these more upbeat, heavier mixes. I have been asked by my wife to make a new Electro mix for her and I'd really like to help the gal out, but I'm unsure as to how soon even that'll be.

Bleep 184 is courtesy of Mark Hawkins' alter ego, this set, which represents his ### alias is not quite what is usually poured forth from Mark. It's not unheard of, but not what he's known for. It still has that Chicagoan touch that he seems to enjoy, but with a less abrasive and in your face quality to it.

There was no real master plan behind this week's Bleep. Which is really how most week's are I guess. I did grab records from 'opposite ends of the shelves' this week. You'll probably figure out what that means with either a glance at the tracklist or an initial listen. Oddly enough I'm happier with the transition in the middle than the NDK/Magic feet mix which should have been easier (easier in that those two records perhaps shouldn't have met in that way).

About 2 weeks ago is when I found Pyschomantix. Or rather, more properly, when he introduced himself. When I invited him into the folds to participate in Bleep Radio I didn't expect a mix sent in so soon. I've gotten much too used to the 6+ month waits that are the norm. I wasn't really enjoying myself while recording this week's Bleep on Monday evening. I hate when I have to start recording a new batch of mixes for Bleep. Playing a few records after work isn't the same as having to record at least an hour for the show. Listening to the mix in the car on the way to work today shows me the mix isn't as awful as I felt it was when playing it. The whole playing for the fun of it thing definitely needs to be done a few more times this week to make up for the forced mixing. That's for sure.

Sequestered away on the 3rd floor, surrounded by records and absolutely no snow are the conditions during which this recording was...recorded. No complaints from this warm bodied individual are going to be heard; I like records and hate snow.

I seem to have narrowed down a bag full of stuff that I may stick with for a few weeks. So you'll notice that a lot of the tracks will be familiar, as they were played last week. I prefer to play that way. From a restricted bag of records that is. It eventually leads to sets that have more energy to them. I feel that way at least. When I'm playing a bunch of records that I just grabbed off of the shelves too much thought goes into remembering what the record is and not enough into how it can be used. I think you'll notice a big difference between last week's set and this week's in terms of how the records are used.

Next week's show is even better (in my opinion anyway). On December 19th I went to a friend's House-party in Toronto and a bunch of us played loud for the rest who came to listen, talk and drink. I lasted until 4am which is clearly 5 hours past my old man bed-time, but the recording is worth it. It's a nice jammer.

On December 19th I went into Toronto as a friend of mine was having a wee gathering at his place. 'His place' isn't your run-of-the-mill bedroom jock set-up though, as he runs the 'Westsidewax Dj School'. For 6 hours we all cycled through bouts of talking, drinking, breaking our host's wine glasses, listening to people play and some of us playing ourselves. Ian was smart enough to hit record on a laptop and pick up the evenings audio.

This week's Bleep is my time on the decks from that night as snipped from the much longer file.

That's how I put it anyway, here's Ian's commentary on the Techno community in which he's involved:

This week's Bleep was recorded live at WestsideWax Studio's annual holiday bash, an invite-only party held on Saturday, December 19. WestsideWax is a multi-faceted musical and artistic endeavour based in the heart of downtown Toronto. The studio is a unique entity, offering vinyl-only DJ lessons to youth and adults alike. And while most of the city's DJ schools focus on turntablism techniques associated with Hip-Hop, WestsideWax's curriculum is geared toward the Techno, House and Electro enthusiast, ensuring students develop an appreciation for the craft in its original medium and encouraging in-depth exploration of the vast history of all three genres. The studio also promotes occasional events ("whenever the mood strikes") under the Pivot moniker, making use of unique and underused venues and eschewing gimmicky trends for the basics of high quality soundsystems and local talent who follow the credo of substance over style. Past guests include Andreas Marouchos, Dylan T (a.k.a. Jack Tripper), Destro Sanchez, Glenn Antram, E.K.G., Core Matrix and of course Bleep's own Trevor "Isoprax" Wilkes, who has thrown down memorable sets at the past two Pivot events.

I was a little hurried this week. being buffeted around on various shifts within one week, plus sick people at home made it more difficult than normal to make time to record a set. Today being 3-03 is the driving force behind the Acid House theme in this week's Bleep Radio show. I would have missed that small coincidence entirely if it wasn't for Malcolm noticing it and bringing it to my attention some 2-3 months ago.

Acid is what snared me and began my interest in electronic music. My very first experience with it was on a local radio station back in the 90's called "Energy 108". On that station Richie Hawtin's old "Transmissions" radio series was aired and Terry Mullan was the first show in that series I caught. To this day I still appreciate it. It was shortly after that I began finding my way to parties in Toronto to check this stuff out first hand.

Bleep's goal is to bring quality dance-floor music, music without it's head up it's arse, to areas where it's seemingly lacking. Stale music has taken over and needs to move over. We need less labels, not more. Techno may be the label that Bleep assumes, but it's the Techno label of days gone by, one that encompasses much and has a sense of humour. The humour bit may be just me though. Enjoy.
