Art of Trance- "Labyrinth parts 1 and 2" (Ok this is a sick lead-line there!Invokes a feel of "desperation". A very dark trance tune. "Gothic" trance indeed. Very underrated.

Rapid Eye- "Circe Forever" (classic)

Solar Stone- "Seven Cities" (No comments)

Most things by Voyager (Justin Scott Dixon) are pretty melancholic. very hypnotic/.

Sad is not the word. you mean melancholic.

If you wanna listen to SAD TRANCE MUSIC, download some funeral music and but a 4-4 beat over it. lol

SOme of the suggestions on this thread are interestingly perscribed. Alot of trance is written in a minor key, but doesn't actually end up sad -- but more ethereal, thoughtful, or driving and ominous.

En-Motion - Getting Away With It (THrillseeker's INstrumental)
Not because the track is definitively sad, per se, but because it does have this "solemn" sound to it that I experienced at one time when I was in a rather lonesome period in my life.

Armin van Buuren - Never Wanted This (Progressive Downtempo)
Lyrics seemed sad, and the strings touched my heart somehow.

Actually, downtempo, IMO, is the better place to look for more "thoughtful" emotions that are slow. Sadness is difficult to experience in a fast pace (but I will call for exceptions).

At the risk of sounding dated, a lot of the more sad stuff I like is older. One of my more favorite sub-genres. Here are some of the songs I can remember without looking too hard:

Yes, it does feel good. At least to me. I love it. I love to cry, the very few times that happens. It's refreshing too, physically, that is.
So a song that even makes you cry, is extremely good, if you ask me.
Now this has happened to me before, and it's soooo nice.

Ok ,after my trance suggestions i decided that trance anyways is too happy. Here is some proper sad music (not trance though, ambient, downtempo and post-rock)

Explosions in the Sky- "A poor man's Memory"

Explosions in the Sky- "With tired eyes, tired minds, tired souls we slept". A 12-minute epic-dramatic masterpiece.

M83- "Farewell, Goodbye" (As a reviewer in DJ mag said "Most sad tune ever written".

M83- "Lower your eyelids to die with the Sun" another 12-minute epic dramatic masterpiece.

Bola- "Effanajor" melancholic ambient at it's best. Yes ambient has a soul.

Bola- "VM8"

Bola- "Aquilla"

There are many more i have in mind.

the breakdown is the reason why then bursts out with really great energy.

darren tate vs. jono grant - let the light shine in:

uplifting yet has a kind of tears of joy feel!

That's what I like about trance the most-there's always something that makes you feel better when you're listening to it.
