hahaa wow. Never did I think to see Fennesz on an EDM tracklist. There are lots of touches of IDM throughout, wavering drum kicks and that beautifully fucking georgous organic atmosphere Holden creates to put you over the top. Jesus i need some good headphones.

May I recommend teh Sony MDR-7506

I have em and this cd sounds great cranked!

I totally misunderstand this music, I literally fell asleep to this boring mix I love James' older stuff, what is he trying to experiment here? It's got that Sasha's Involver feel definately with the help of Pro tools or Ableton. His Balance compilation was superb shouldn't compare the two I know but 'At the controls' is absolutely boring

Posted by plaxx on Mar-17-2006 05:03:

crap cd. heard it, and only liked certain songs, i want holden to make good music again

Posted by Phortastic on Mar-20-2006 01:07:

very decent release this. Alot of standout tracks for me: Petter - Some Polyphony, Holden - Lump, Midimiliz - Trace Function, Nathan Fake - Charlie's House (Apparat Remix), Lucky Pierre - Angels On Your Body and Christ - Perlandine Friday on CD1. Paul Kalkbrenner - Gebrnn Gebrnn, Malcolm Middleton - Solemn Thirsty, Egoexpress - Live At Sirius Prime, Black Strobe - Nazi Trance Fuck Off! (Holden Remix) and AFX - Every Day on CD2.

So that are alot of highlights i guess. Still most of the other tracks dont quite live up to the same standards. And while u can argue that most of those tracks are just bridge tracks building to something bigger u have got to admit that with balance 005 every track was breathing the same amount of quality all over. At least for me.

This is still very good though but not in the same league as balance 005. And yes u cant compare the styles, i know that. But im not talking about that, im talking about the quality.

My 2 cents

Yes, what a brilliant reply

Gonna get the cd next week...

Posted by bamski on Mar-22-2006 13:55:

Got it yesterday, safe to say that its one of the best compilations in a loong time.. for me.. in a genre-defying way..

Posted by Chris.CSC.AS on Mar-28-2006 11:41:

Why does no one comment on 10101??? This is such a beautiful track in my opinion. Heard it in one of his sets a few months ago and found it absolutely amazing. Starts at 38:30. ALso Beautiful is The Darkest Star DUB (not Remix) by Holden, soooo cool.

Even Balance 005? I though everyone agreed to like that album regardless of personal preference.

Posted by Protege on Mar-31-2006 22:17:

Amazon now says release date is April 11th. I just ordered it off of Amazon.co.uk. Im not sure why amazon.com doesnt release it when co.uk has it in stock.

This CD is pre-dominantly glitched-out/minimal/IDM techno. Not sure if you'd like it, if Holden's name wasn't slapped on it. That's one thing I've realized: the amount of attention this release has recieved on TA just because Holden's name is on it. Any IDM/minimal DJ releasing the exact same thing and it would be unheard of in this forum. It's a great CD don't get me wrong, but lets face it, Holden's name is whats keeping most people (in TA) attached to this mix.

damn amazon.ca doesnt seem to have it argh

Maybe for some, but I was not expecting this at all, and I've actually been gravitating towards more minimal house and techno myself recently, The IDM side is just refreshing, because its something that really doesnt get much exposure on this forum, and thus, less people are very familiar with it...

I think most Holden fans are just surprised and enjoying some very good music, even though it may not have been what they expected. When it comes to someone like Holden, I've said it before (and I said it before heard this CD) that regardless of what genres he chooses to play, I trust his taste in music enough to expect something really good.

If it was some unheard-of guy releasing this we'd never get to listen to it, true. But if by some random coincidence i did, i'd love it as well.

Now to be fair: this CD isn't flawless and certainly not the greatest work of art in the decade or something. I feel myself listening to CD2 way more than CD1, meaning the whole package isn't perfect. At first I thought the heavy-dark Lump and Nazitrancefuckoff disrupted from the whole feel of the mix, now I think if they weren't there the compilation could end up feeling too "fluffy" overall. They're both powerful tracks, but Lump has a particular pet peeve of mine: it uses the cheap trick of including child voices to make it sound scary. James, it's lame. And while it's not a big deal, it's a factor in my preference of CD2 over CD1. Nazitrancefuckoff on the other hand is really fucking good.

But there's loads of utterly brilliant "feel-good" tracks in here, particularly:

Kate Wax - Angel Blues (ok not 100% "feel-good", but those vocals..)
Anita Berber - Death In Vegas
Harmonia - Watussi (i'm guessing Holden takes that proeminent melodic loop from this track on top of "10101", cause i can't distinguish the two tracks completely)
Lucky Pierre - Angels In Your Body
Christ. - Perlandine Friday
------
Paul Kalkbrenner - Gebrunn Gebrunn
Malcolm Middleton - Solemn Thirsty
Water Lilly - Lottotron Reboot
Trans Am - Cold War (War Is Stupid Mix)
Slag Boom Van Loon - Poppy Seed (Boards Of Canada Reprise)
AFX - Every Day

That's almost half of all tracks. And enough for me to award it a very, very solid 9/10.

As for putting it against Balance 005.. I don't really know. Maybe Balance is better given its time period. Maybe. But this one probably fits a bit more my current musical taste.. it's too close to call.

I don't know about you but the retarded kid saying "we are" totally pwns and it's what makes that track! It's the best part in Lump!
