tragic way to leave the competition

I think everyone should be proud of the Roo's. They came into this tournament with little to no expectations and they showed the rest of the world that we actually can play the game.

Bring on South Africa 2010!

Finally watched the Materazzi on Bresciano incident. I rate Materazzi as probably one of the biggest neanderthals in the history of football, but there's no way in hell that was a red card, unless FIFA re-wrote the entire book.

I guess the penalty was compensation then.

Totally, look at his right foot. He has the ability to plant it, but brings it back and dives. Superb acting though.

Just too sad after what I saw today... Italy was in fact the better side on the pitch, even with 10 men they were creating more scoring opportunities than Australia... no doubt about it.

But to win like that, that's just a shame. Even the most euforic italian guys at work were sad they won like that, with a fake penalty. Something needs to be done with these type of players who can't even smell the box because their legs all of the sudden turn weak and voila, you got a penalty. Whether that other play was red card or not... that play will be remembered by every football fan for a long time.

I feel so bad for those who were truly cheering for Aus and their fans at the stadium, just admirable. They have certainly made a supporter out of me.

In the end, today I feel disgusted about football and if you like honest, no cheating kind of football, you'd feel disgusted too. A sad, very sad day for football.

i want some of what you're taking.

Posted by luisjb82 on Jun-27-2006 01:39:

lolz malek... I did watch the game and Aus wasn't creating any serious goal chances. You can't be that biased to deny that.

That was the problem with Aus today who weren't able of transforming all that ball possession % into more danger at Italy's box. I was surprised but they should have tried throwing more balls to Viduka and then Aloisi when he entered, at least something different who knows, but all those passes were not doing any harm at all.

Someone wrote this in the Australia forum a week ago and i think it's very relevant to last nights game:

I was reading in the paper a few days ago that in a split second decision that a study found %90 of decisions are effected by media flooding an opinion or statement. The referee's in all our games have made a lot of flawed decisions clearly effected by pre-conceptions. Australia are considered rough and dirty players and all the teams we have played have claimed this leading up to our matches as a tactic to get the referee's judgments clowded.

Free's for and Against have been stupid. Australia need to stand up to that and someone needs to realise and point out that Australia play harder at the ball than most teams and have more desperation than most teams. However they are sportsmanlike in behaviour. Then theres the BIG one, WE DONT TAKE STUPID DIVES! Australians very rarely waste time pretending to be hurt.

I think the semi finals are achievable if the media portrayel over in europe changes after our amazing efforts and endeavour last night even though the public mentality is against us.

BUT FCK YEAH BRING ON ITALY!

If you've watched all of Australias games in the tournament you'll see how unfair many critical calls against us have been, it's been an uphill battle this entire time against injury, bad refs, and some of the best soccer teams in the world. It's really sad to see us go out this way but i am so proud at how far the Socceroos have come. If we had a bit of luck on our side things may have been different...

Posted by tathi on Jun-27-2006 03:09:

Watch Fabio Grosso do a little skip with his left leg to position his foot closer to Neills back and then push down with the soul of his foot and lean forward. Absolutely fucking despicable dive, how can a ref award something as blatantly theatrical as that in the last 7 seconds of the game? Divers are a disgrace to the sport.

I feel so sorry for Lucas Neill, he's the man that's gotten Australia this far, he hasn't stepped a foot wrong this entire tournament, and has been an amazing defender which makes this "foul" even more depressing. Lucas Neill deserves the Australian Man of the Tournament.

I think there are going to be quite a few big name clubs signing him and other Australians after this world cup..

i was so appalled by what i saw today that i will never every in my entire life will i ever root for italy ever again.

i am so ashamed how the italian team played, that i will probably not even teach my children how to speak italian... i don't want them know that we share a language and culture w/the pussies i saw on the field today.

what i saw was ambomination. that wasn't even football. just a bunch of guys taking shots to see if they can the ref to call a foul in their favor. one of the lowest most disgusting things i have ever seen in my entire life.

lol take things too seriously much?

(i dont like what he did either, just for the record.)

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jun-27-2006 04:20:

tathi, you should know better than to post a split second gif to represent that attempted tackle. you play a much longer version of it and its much less damning. he wasnt near the ball. if you go in hard like that and you dont get the ball then im sorry, even if you dont trip the guy up like he made out youre still in dangerous waters.

theres nothing wrong with what he did. Agreed its not sportmanship but any other player would have done the same thing. When a player dives in front of you in the box, its like being offered a penalty on a silver platter.

The only reason this incdident is being so hyped up is because its a knockout game and a sad way for a team that played so well in the tournament to be knocked out but thats football for you.

Bresciano who looked like the danger man today was lucky that he didnt score a game winner. He plays for parma and we all know how the job status of the last parma man to score against italy in a world cup turned out.

And he wasn't anywhere near his legs either? To my knowledge he was sliding to deflect a potential shot, and then Grosso dived over his back. Look closely at Grossos right foot as it's about to land steadily on the ground (which would have had him up and running after the ball) until he realises he'd have more luck trying for the penalty so his knee turns to jelly and he exageratedly pulls his right foot back and leans forward. It's a textbook dive.

I really hope Italy get booed onto the pitch for their game against the Ukraine, the fans need to show them that this disgraceful behaviour will not be tolerated because it's sending the game into disrepute.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jun-27-2006 04:53:

^^ im not for a moment debating that he dived. however im saying the defender certainly impeded the striker and youve gotta be careful doing that in the box & being the last line of defence. i still reckon its a 50-50 call and depends on which school you went to

i know it's just a game. the problem for me, is these wusses have the nerve to do what they are doing wearing an italian jersy, and do it w/out showing the slightest bit of shame IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE WORLD. it disgusts me to see these pieces of crap representing people like me/us who have italian blood running thru their veins.

it's not just penalty that was called, when the italian should have gotten a yellow card for "simulation" -that's we call it in spanish, i don't know what the exact soccer term for it is english... it's just that this is how italy plays. plain and simple... this is what they do for 90minutes. it's not a startling revalation. i will admit that i have been in a sort of denial about this... i was never happy about it, which is why i rarely openly root for italy in a football game. and when i do root for italy, a part of me feels disgusted, because i know exactly what they are going to do... i almost justified this sort of thing to myself, but calling it smart soccer by using the ref/rules to help you control the game... kind of like the sissy tatics that you see in basket ball to draw fouls, or what they call "managing the clock" in american football.

but for me, this game was over the top. and enough is enough.

i don't think the aussies were totally robbed, because i don't think they would have won the game at all even w/OT or penalties. but this was truly a crappy way to go especially since the socceroo's didn't even get a chance to respond.

for now on, i refer to the italian national team as "forza rosa".
these guys make me sick. i hope they get killed in the next round.

simulation is just a polite english term they use for diving. In any case this incident highlights the fact that video replays are clearly needed in football.

On tv, it looked like grosso had taken a dive but the referee doesnt have the option to see it in slow motion and this was a tough one to call. Lucal neil went for the tackle early and didnt get the ball which went against him. In any case, as dirty as Italy are deemed to be playing, one cant deny the fact they have the worst luck when it comes to world cups. Getting robbed by bad refereeing the last time and going out on PK's on 2 previous occasions so you cant help but think they deserve a bit of good fortune to come their way.

actually I don't think he was going for a tackle, he was trying to block a shot. The Italian guy did start to cock his leg for a shot just as Neill starting coming into frame, you can see his foot twitch like he was about to go for a kick, he stopped cos Neil was blocking. Admittedly though the other leg did sweep around like it may have been a tackle, but I honestly believe the only intention of the slide was to block a shot.

you can see it here, the Italian guy starts to shuffle and bring his leg through for a kick just as Neil goes (a fair way) in front of him, he then cancelled the kick and ran into him
