Well, I certainly agree that there was some ill intent to what he was saying, and also that he is in violation of social norms. Personally, if I were to judge him too harshly for either of those things I would risk being the pot calling the kettle black (pun intended.) I don't always abide by social norms, and it would be quite a significant lie for me to claim to never have had ill intent towards anybody.

I do think he would have been better served to exercise restraint, and furthermore that his using the idea of race as the fuel for his verbal assault was foolish. I also agree that his subsequent public disfavor is a predictable outcome of that decision.

Apparently my own enculturation has been insufficient to give me any motivation to take part in the natural societal reaction whereby we all ostracize the deviant. It's not that I agree with his behavior, I just find his behavior to be effectively irrelevant. If it is your wish, or your nature, you are certainly free to use social norms as the standard by which to evaluate his behavior. I myself shall not.

In any case, I'm glad that a situation like this causes me mild amusement rather than outrage. Given the choice, I'd rather experience the pleasant emotion than the unpleasant one, although admittedly many people do seem to find pleasure in outrage.
