As much as I hate to admit it, that IS kinda underhanded of Sony....but at the same time, smart. You still benefit though at $599. More hard drive space and a game included. The $499 60GB model will most likely fly off the shelves even faster now should consumers hear that the quantities are now very limited.

It is, but I kinda like that whole long sharp weapon thingy she uses when you hold L1. The reviews were a bit harsh...the game kicks serious ass but is quite short, which of course kills the score on a lot of game reviews.

Lair on the other hand, or so I hear, is a HUGE flop and is utterly awful. The Sixaxis wasnt designed to take on the control of an entire game, rather just a little added feature for something small, but Factor 5 didnt listen to that piece of advice. Apparently its not responsive enough to make quick decisions even possible, and the whole game experience is dragged down. Its supposed to look and sound good, though. I guess its cool just as long as you are watching someone play.

Havent played Warhawk yet, but its supposed to kick ridiculous amounts of ass. Multiplayer only with a 32 player limit sounds intense as all hell. I'd love to hear if its any good if any of you have played it.

Pretty soon we'll have Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, and Folklore, all of which look ace.

Home was delayed until Spring though, which is a bummer. I think 2008 is the year the PS3 really does shine. I predict another price drop alongside the arrival of the almighty Metal Gear Solid 4, SOCOM 4, Gran Turismo 5, and Final Fantasy XIII. Here's hoping at least, since sales arent all that hot.

Plus, rumble is coming back! Reportedly companies can release downloadable patches to make older PS3 games compatible. Obviously if you just bought yourself a PS3 or a new controller, your shit outta luck, since you dont got yourself a rumble pack.

Folklore got a 9.0 on IGN. Good news.

Surely there's gotta be a way to make some older PS3s rumble compatible...? Maybe just a controller modification...?

Any and all PS3's can easily be made rumble compatible simply through firmware updates. Its just that the older CONTROLLERS themselves wont be able to rumble since they wont have rumble packs in them.

40GB PS3 Confirmed for Europe; Sony Gives Up on Backwards Compatibility

Europeans will soon have a cheaper PS3 option, as the new 40GB console hits store shelves on October 10. Sadly for PS2 fans, however, the new SKU completely eliminates any backwards compatibility. There's still no official word on the new PS3 for the U.S.

While Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has yet to confirm the 40GB PS3 for North America, the folks at SCEE as expected have officially announced a new 40GB model that is set to go on sale for 399 euros (299 GBP in U.K.) across Europe on October 10.

"The introduction of the new PS3 has been determined following user feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners. The new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port," SCEE explained.

More interesting, however, is the complete abandonment of any backwards compatibility. This new model does not contain the PS2 chip and will not feature backwards compatibility through software emulation either. SCEE said this reflects "both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas)."

GameDaily BIZ also contacted SCEE spokesman Nick Sharples who told us, "We have made clear on many occasions that our priority is on developing innovative new features and services for PS3 and not on backwards compatibility. The 40GB model no longer contains any elements of the PS2 chip set which powered backwards compatibility in previous models, and is therefore only compatible with PS one titles."

He added, "For those who consider backwards compatibility important, the 60GB Starter Pack with extra SIXAXIS controller, two first party titles and extensive backwards compatibility remains available until stocks run out. With a 100 Euro price reduction from 10th October, this model is a real bargain."

As Sharples mentioned, SCEE also officially dropped the price on the 60GB Starter Pack to 499 euros, although in the U.K. and Ireland, the Starter Pack will be replaced by a separate in-store promotion on the 60GB PS3 the company noted. In the U.K. it will be replaced by a 60GB value pack at a price of �349.

"The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next generation of PS3 owners," said David Reeves, President of SCEE. "It has allowed us to deliver an extremely advanced, yet highly affordable High Definition entertainment system, configured to the needs of the next generation of European PS3 owners. PS3 has always been the device of choice for the discerning gamer and entertainment seeker, and the new PS3 is more than ever the perfect High Definition entertainment system.

With the 40GB SKU now official across the pond, GameDaily BIZ has once again contacted SCEA to see if they will confirm anything for North America, but we've yet to hear back.

To summarize: This new model has yet to be confirmed for a North American release, however its almost a sure bet that it'll happen.

Anyways...no backwards compatibility for PS2 games. Strangely enough, if you read closely, you'll notice that there WILL be backwards compatibility for PSone games. I found that kinda odd, but its how the PS3 architecture is designed. Apparently for PS2 games to work an entire new chipset is required, and to cut down production costs, Sony is vouching to remove it.

This is good in that the price will drop even more (now down to around the same price as the 360), and yet the HD is still quite large.

This is bad in that this alienates the entire 500-1000 PS2 game library. I still play PS2 games quite frequently on my PS3, so this decision would piss me off had I not bought a PS3 already.

I'm not sure just yet if Sony will continue selling other models of the PS3 that still include backwards compatibility, thats still up in the air.

Downloaded the demo of Ratchet & Clank last night and HOLY SHIT!!!! Never been near the franchise before but this was hilarious fun! But what impressed me most was the flawless framerate considering how incredibly beautiful this game is (lazy programmers should follow this game as an example ) cant wait to get my hands on the full game!

I downloaded that demo a few nights ago but have yet to install/play it. I'll give it a try later today.

Checked it out last night...VERY impressed. Sony needs to put more 'Everyone' games on the PS3 to make it appeal more to the masses, and this game fits the bill perfectly. The cartoonish, animated look is absolutely stunning with the flawless framerate and the unbelievable amount of action that goes onscreen all at once.

now that price is cheaper i'm considering buying a PS3, but a big issue with me is backwards compatibility.

i was considering the 60 gb or the new 80gb.

they are both the same price.
has anyone had issues playing PS1 and/or PS2 games
on either of these versions.

e.g. Marvel vs Capcom 2

Final Fantasy 7, 8

I have a 20GB PS3 (the one not sold any more) and I have never had a problem with backwards compatibility. The only titles that would ever concern me would be the old PSone games, like Die Hard Trilogy, or ESPN Extreme Games, or the very original Twisted Metal, but even they still worked. So I'm sure it would be the same for the 60 and 80GB since they have the same emulation hardware.

But yeah, the $399 40GB is a good deal, but w/out backwards compatibility, I'm not so sure. Now, for $499, you get an 80GB, with a game (Motorstorm), AND every single original PS3 feature, including backwards compatibility. I think THATS the killer deal. In the eyes of the public, though, that $399 is gonna move reaaaal fast, considering now its the same price as the 360 Premium.

Strangely enough its actually NOT software based. Sony had to install another chipset to make it backwards compatible with PS2 games, because the Cell (processor for running PS3 games) is a totally different setup. Sony opted to take it out to both a) save money on production costs and b) encourage those people to buy PS3 games.

I've heard that a PS2 or PS1 game here and there doesnt work on occasion, for some reason, but I know that all the big titles, like the Gran Turismo's, the Final Fantasy's, the Metal Gear Solid's, the ones that people are still playing for sure, work fine.

Whats even stranger? The 40GB PS3, I hear, IS backwards compatible with PSone games. Not PS2. I'm not sure why, but I guess the PS3 setup can still run old school games, but not the games of the most recent generation. Fucked up if you ask me.

Its official, ive caved in and got me an 80gb ps3 and bought me Rock Band Special Edition with it as my first game. This shit is awesome! DA where you at dawg?

damn that is a hella good deal, and to be honest, all my friends are razzing me by calling me a traitor, cause they all have xbox360's and i went ps3 way...guess im gonna complete the set too. I just found better deals for ps3's on craiglists than all the old xbox 360 on sale and overpriced.

Btw, Rock Band is a downright awesome game.

Yeah - I've got a 360 and a Wii already, and really the only thing left is a PS3. Now with Blu-Ray pulling out ahead, I guess it's just the first time I've actually considered buying one.

Doooooooooo itttttttt. $300 for a 60gb is a sick deal. IMO, the 60gb one is also the best of the ps3 packages as well. I ended up getting a sick deal off of craigslist similar to this ~6 months ago.

And I can totally relate 100% of what you wrote, Rodrico. My one biggest regret about not having xbox360 is not being able to play with all my friends online in Gears of War.. christ that game is addicting. I promised them that I would buy a 360 around the time whenever Gears of War 2 comes out.

Thats an outright INCREDIBLE deal. Just too good to pass up. I would jump on it. I'm sure theres enough already out and enough coming for you to enjoy a PS3 next to your 360 and Wii. Plus, like you said, I think blu-ray will end up being the winner, whenever the winner is finally declared.

Welp, I'm going to go ahead and take the plunge then - why not, right?
