Wow. I knew trance was incorporating elements of emo lately, but I had no idea!

Another nail in trance's coffin: Dj Shog(formerly an uplifting hardtrance producer)'s sound is morphing into the ever present "electrotrance sound".

Here in the states, dance music had it's 15 min of fame. It used to be played on the radio and was pushed as the music of the future. That push failed. Just because it's not on the radio doesn't mean it's dead.

The dance music scene here is just getting older over here. I don't think there is any new blood, and if there is it's not much.

edit:

Quantity killed trance. Suddenly it was common that any moron could make a trance tune and get signed. No talent or creativity needed. Only a decent Computer and userfriendly Software and some practice. The good tunes by cerative people out there faded away in the dust off the enormous amount of releases. And the big focus on DJ'ing and not producing also plays a big part.

If you showed that to the people in the production forum, they'll just laugh. It's not easy making a trance song. It's not like you can just sit down one day and learn even simple ol' fruity loops and start making trance. Even something easy to make like off bass, super saw lead, random fx trance cheese takes time to learn.

Even though I disagree about your argument on producing, I agree about your argument on DJs.

Also, a lot of people are criticizing trance for not evolving. Well, it's dance music which is a branch of popular music. It's supposed to be fun. You need to arrange your tracks to make it work on the dance floor. Adjusting the chords to make it sound different will just be a borefest on the DANCE floor. It's no longer DANCEABLE. People complain about the same chord progressions, notes, keys, and arrangement. Well if you change any of that, it might sound good, but not danceable. Trance/Dance cannot evolve because it's inherently holding itself back.

Who killed trance? Trance isn't dead...but who IS killing trance? All the shit talkers and people who are afraid of change.

Posted by DJ-Kreing^^ on Mar-18-2007 18:10:

Who killed trance? Producers who dont make quality music any moreinstead we have some shitty pop cultural crap that is being recycled for the past 4 years or so. No real pioneers in the genre no innovators. I mean there probably are some of those its just that these days its hard to tell apart the good stuff and the regular shit.

Your mom killed trance when she said to turn down the music, your father is trying to sleep.

I fail to comprehend how people can say that Trance got 'commercial' and from there it began its downturn.

The only 'commerciality' of trance is that those who know something about electronica generally, would know of certain people who to them have a 'commercial personna', quite frankly you go and talk to the commercial masses and ask them whether they have heard of any dance artist, i.e. Tiesto, AvB, PvD, they will say no, electronica to the commercial masses that buy music is still an 'underground/minority' specialist market, yes some people have made a name for themsleves but you don't see Tiesto's, Armins or PvD albums sitting next to the real commercial 'dance-pop' artists? that are DJ Sammy, Cascada and whoever else....

As for the trance scene its expanded and grew, its hardly died...the only thing that has died is that once its 'commercial-masses' breakthrough of 97-99/00 (in the UK) where tracks got actually released as singles in places like Woolworths! they no longer do, its purely even more so a specialist market, particularly thanks to internet...so to say its commercial or went commercial i think is a misnomer, its a minority/specialist group, as many people in the world listen to Trance as they probably do to Sufi music...Tiesto/PvD/AvB/Oakie etc are the figureheads to Electronica generally as Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn is to Sufi.

This is my theory on how trance died.

Oakenfold, Diggers, and Sasha had it in their hands at the turn of the century. They where the ones championing the "Progressive Trance" sound.

Meanwhile, artists like Ferry, PvD, and Tiesto had the whole, for a lack of better term, "Euro" trance sound going. While not cheesy or bad, it just seemed to always stay the same. There was some crossovers, and some very good productions between the UK and Euro big names (Tilt - Rendevouz being one).

Sasha and Digweed went off on their own paths, down the lines of progressive house, darker, moodier, stuff that wasn't really trance, and not really house. Oakenfold did too much coke (ok, thats a jab) and fame and success went to his head and he turned towards the Americas, and instead of being the Pioneer he once was, he just adapted and made music that wasn't really good pop and definitly not good EDM.

Ferry, PvD and Tiesto took the limelight for trance... and they killed it. While their sound is decent, it doesn't change much. There is no real innovation in the styles they play... and them being the big names means everyone, bedroom producer to the big-wigs make stuff that sounds like their sound. They fell into a rut, and this is when trance started to die.

In simple terms, people like AvB and the others that follow the "McProg" trance sound just feed off the dying genre and basically cater the to necrophiliacs and posers that are trying to get in on it while it still has some life.

In short, the real innovaters, the ones that made the changes were the UK DJ's and producers, the mainland Europeans could never really live up to their works and just kept doing the same old, same old, and for a lack of better music it became popular.

Thats not to say that there isnt any good trance now, there is some, but its few and far between and none of it lives up to the stuff that came out of the UK during the 90's.

Hah!

Pretty good analysis on the whole. I'm hoping the Germans rescue it one day, if they haven't started to already.
